SHOOTING ON JANUARY 31, 2015
KITCH ROAD AND COUNTRY CLUB ROAD
COWLEY COUNTY KANSAS
At approximately 6:24 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015
a sheriff’s deputy stopped to check on a 2011 white Dodge Ram
pickup truck near the intersection of Kitch Road and Country
Club Road on Country Club Road. When the deputy made
contact with the driver, he saw that he was injured and the driver
stated that he had been shot. The 46 white male from Arkansas
City could only tell the deputy that it was a dark colored vehicle
and saw a flash when he had been shot.
The victim was transported to William Newton Memorial
Hospital and later to Wesley Medical Center. The Kansas
Bureau of Investigation, Kansas Highway Patrol, Winfield
Police Department assisted the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office
in the investigation.
The following day after a search warrant had been
obtained, a slug was recovered in the driver’s seat of the truck.
During the daylight an extensive search was conducted in the
area of the reported shooting. At approximately 12:00 p.m.,
several hundred yards south, on the opposite side of the road of
where the alleged shooting took place, a firearm was found and
it was believed to be the firearm used in the shooting.
Upon further investigation and interviewing the victim at
the hospital, the shooting has been determined to be a selfinflicted gunshot wound in a suicide attempt. The victim had
shot himself. The firearm was found wrapped in two plastic
bags when it was located on the side of the road. The victim
admitted to investigators that the report he made about an
unknown assailant in a dark colored vehicle shooting him was
false.
Upon completion of the investigation, the report will be
sent to the Cowley County Attorney Christopher Smith for the
consideration of charges related to the incident.
