Chapter 6 – “Perfect Parenting, Part II; or: Would a
Roshanda by Any Other Name Smell as Sweet?”
1. Is a person’s name likely to be an indicator of that person’s
success in later life?
2. What are parents signaling when they choose a name for their
child?
3. Evaluate this statement; “The name a parent gives his or her child
will have a significant effect on the child’s success. After all, the
data show that certain names are associated with increased
income.” Is this true? Explain why or why not.
4. Why is anyone who bothers to change his/her name in the pursuit
of economic success possibly likely to succeed? Explain your
answer.
5. According to the data in Freakonomics, what happens over time to
the names of children who grow up to be successful?
6. Select ONE of the main topics discussed in Chapter 6 that is
different than the TWO you discussed above. Summarize what
this topic was about and write a Reflection about it. In the
reflection, I want you to express your opinion and views. Do you
agree with Levitt’s reasoning? If so why, if not, why not? Explain
yourself with ideas from the book.
