Objectives:
Latin I is an introduction to the Latin language and to Roman mythology,
legend and culture. Students will acquire a basic Latin vocabulary and
increase their knowledge of English words derived from Latin. Students
will also become versed in the essentials of Latin grammar. The study of
vocabulary and grammar will help them acquire and develop the ability to
translate passages of increasing difficulty from Latin into English and, to a
lesser degree, from English into Latin. The two key skills are reading and
writing. However, students should also be able to read aloud comfortably
in Latin with correct pronunciation.
Homework: A moderate assignment will be given with EACH class, which will
include written work and preparation for a DAILY vocabulary/grammar
quiz. Homework assignments are to be written by hand and turned in at
the beginning of each period. Late assignments will not be accepted.
2
Absences:
In the event of illness or other legitimate absence, missed assignments are
due on the class which follows the student’s first day back. For example,
if a student is sick on Tuesday and returns on Thursday, he will have until
the following Monday to make up the work. Nota bene: A proper time for
any make-up quiz or test must be worked out with the instructor. These
can be made up before or after school, and outside of normal class hours
by appointment. Again, responsibility for making up an assignment, quiz,
or test resides solely with the student.
Grading:
The Language Department maintains the following guidelines for grading
percentages:
Quarter Grades
20% Daily work (homework assignments, class participation, etc.)
30% Quizzes
50% Tests
Semester grades are determined as follows:
40% first quarter grade
40% second quarter grade
20% final exam
No grades will be dropped and there is no extra credit.
All grades will be updated on line usually by the next day, always by
Friday afternoon.
Tutoring/Extra Help:
I will be available from 7:45 to 8:20 daily (place to be determined) and
after school by appointment. If you need extra help, please take advantage
of tutoring.
3
Class Conduct:
All rules and regulations specified in the Student Handbook apply.
-Omnia quaecumque vultis ut faciant vobis homines, et vos facite illis.
Treat others as you wish to be treated. Rudeness toward adults or fellow
students will result in a detention.
-All students must be in their seats when the bell rings.
-Age quod agis: While you are in this class, you need to concentrate on
Latin. Sleeping, talking without permission, writing or passing notes, or
working on assignments for other classes will not be tolerated.
-Come prepared; bring all the materials you will need, as well as
homework.
-Cheating is unacceptable, whether on a quiz, test, or homework
assignment, and will result in a zero for the assignment as well as a
disciplinary referral.
