Year 7 Homework Project - INVENTIONS
TASK: Choose 2 activities to work on for your homework project. You must complete the task in the centre, coloured red,
and one other. You are allowed to choose more if you wish.
Tick your selection and show your teacher which ones you are planning to do.
Music over Time
Medicine
Be an inventor
How has music been affected by clever inventions?
Chart the history of music from basic drums,
orchestras, jazz music to electric guitars. Make sure
to look at the recording of music too – from
gramophones to ipods! This can be presented as a
timeline. Finally, explain which period of history has
had the biggest change in music (remember to say
why you think this!)
Many inventions have shaped the course of medicine
– from the microscope, thermometer, x-rays to
painkillers. Create a doctors report on the top ten
medical inventions of all time. Explain why these
medical inventions are so important. You could film
your report and then show it to the rest of the class.
Can you think of an invention which has not been
invented yet? Get creative and make your own
History changing invention! You could make a model
of a hovering skateboard, a new engine for a car or a
holograph for your living room! Explain how this
invention will be important in the future.
Museum Investigation
The greatest invention of all time…
Transport
Visit a museum, or think of one you have visited in
the past, or visit the online Science Museum, the
section called ‘Online Stuff’,
http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/onlinestuff.aspx
Your task is to find out what inventions they are
showing and how the museum shows them. Do they
do a good job? Or can you do better? Design a
better web page (this can be done by hand or on the
computer) for the museum about their inventions.
You could create a web page on the museum if you
are technical enough!
Choose one invention and present it in your own style
(power point, speech, poster, leaflet, extended
writing etc). You need to explain why this invention
is the greatest of all time.
You need to think about significance ….. what makes
it the greatest?
It may be ‘great’ because it has done the most to
improve health or improve leisure time or made the
most money or been used by the most people.
There is no right or wrong so YOU DECIDE!!
The wheel dates back to 3100BC and made the
transportation of goods much faster. Write a
creative story about the importance of the wheel
5000 years ago – imagine you are a prehistoric
character who has created the wheel! You could do
this as a Pre historic Dragon’s Den or Apprentice
style pitch to buyers. Try and convince your
audience they need the wheel. Explain why it is so
important.
Computers
Did you know, only 30 years ago computers didn’t
even exist in the same sense? Try to explain the
importance of computer design, the internet and
networking sites. Who created the first computer?
Create a large poster on the importance of the dot
com age.
Pick anything as long as you have not already
used it in this homework
Printing
Johann Gutenberg created the printing press in the
1430’s and made the mass production of
books/leaflets etc much easier and quicker. Before
this people used block printing. Try creating your own
block printing press by craving a pattern into
polystyrene or a potato, dipping it into paint and then
pressing it onto material/paper. Make a cover for a
book on Modern Printing using this method. Find out
how printing is done now and include it in the book.
Ask the ‘oldies’
Research within your family how inventions have
changed life in the home. Try to speak to older
relatives to find out what life was like before
inventions such as the TV, mobile phones, dishwasher,
the internet… What was their childhood like? How
has their life changed? This interview could be
recorded, filmed or written.
