Keynote Speaker: Barry Beck ’90, 305 Ives Hall
“Getting to Startup: How to Start a Company, Build a Brand, and Raise Private Equity”
Barry Beck is the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Bluemercury, Inc., a high-growth
luxury beauty retail chain, e-commerce provider and cosmetics brand developer. Mr. Beck
oversees all aspects of Bluemercury’s operations including real estate, product development
and finance. Mr. Beck also serves on Bluemercury’s Board of Directors, a position he has held
since the company’s inception. He developed the original store retail model after his
acquisition and development of the first Bluemercury store. Mr. Beck has appeared as a guest
speaker for the Showcase on Great Consumer Brands at NASDAQ, the Future of Bricks-andMortar Retail at the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, Mobile Payment and
Omnichannel Retailing at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, and has spoken on the
subject of entrepreneurship and innovation at Cornell University and Columbia University’s
Lang Center for Entrepreneurship’s Distinguished Speaker Series. Mr. Beck currently sits on
the Trustee Council of Cornell University, the Advisory Council of Cornell University’s ILR
School, and on the Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.
In 2006, Mr. Beck also co-founded M-61 Laboratories, makers of M-61 Skincare, the first
highly technical, natural cosmeceutical brand. Prior to Bluemercury’s founding Mr. Beck
participated in the founding of Tower Systems, Inc., now known as U.S. Maintenance, a
contract maintenance business serving national retail chains, which was acquired by Emcor
Group (NYSE:EME), a Fortune 500 Company. Beck received his Bachelor of Science from
Cornell University. He resides in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife and three children.
