Course Description:
This course is the second part of the one year German program The focus will be to
further build Student’s communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing,
and enhance cultural connections. The covered texts are designed to gradually increase
students’ receptive skills, and students’ productive ability through a progression from
guided practices to open ended communication.
Writing skills will contain contextualized exercises, guided by essay topics, and leading
to a wide range of open-ended activities in the workbook. Grammatical structures will
further provide students with the necessary skills for proficiency in the language.

Attendance Policy:
An instructor has the prerogative to withdraw a student for excessive absences, excessive
tardiness, or any other legitimate reason; i.e. disciplinary problems. Therefore, students
are expected to attend every class and lab, and to be on time. Any student missing a
combined total of FOUR hours of classroom instruction/lab hours may be asked to
withdraw from the course. Each late arrival to class or lab or early departure will result
in a deduction of FIVE pts.
.Students who are absent are responsible for all announcements made, assignments given,
and material covered in their absence.
A sign in sheet will be provided at the beginning of each class and language lab. Failure
to sign in will be considered as absence.
Withdrawal Policy:
In accordance with the Manatee Community College policy as stated in the college
catalog, students may withdraw from any course or all courses without academic penalty
of a WF by the withdrawal deadline as listed in the Manatee Community College
Academic Calendar. This semester the date is Wednesday March 196h. Students must
take responsibility for initiating the withdrawal procedure. Students are strongly
encouraged to talk with their instructors first before taking any withdrawal action.
Plagiarism:
Is the use of ideas, facts, opinions, illustrative material, data, direct or indirect wording of
another scholar and/or writer-professional or student –without giving proper credit.
Expulsion, suspension, or any lesser penalty will be imposed for plagiarism.
Disability:
Students with disability should register with the Office of Disability Services in order to
receive accommodation and appropriate services. The instructor should be notified
during the first week of classes. A letter from the respective office is necessary to
accommodate the needs of the student.

Standards of Conduct:
Students are expected to abide by all LANCER STUDENT HANDBOOK guidelines.
Our classroom climate relies on mutual respect and support for each other. Disturbances
and any activity, which disrupts or interferes with the education or orderly process of
operation of class, will NOT be tolerated and will result in withdrawal from class.
Since the above-described course has a language component where computers are used to
fulfill course requirements, computers must be used for course purposes only. As stated
in the LANCER STUDENT HANDBOOK, all unethical or irresponsible use of
computers is grounds for disciplinary action. Further information is available in the
handbook.
Make-Up Tests and Incompletes:
The aforementioned are given only in case of serious illness, accidents, etc. A written
statement from a qualified clinician is required before a decision for a make-up test or an
incomplete grade will be made. Students will be excused from class in observance of a
religious holidays, however, students should inform the instructor in advance.
Chapter Tests:
Chapter tests will consist of the following categories.
A. Listening Comprehensions
B. Vocabulary
C. Grammar
D. Culture
E. Reading Comprehension
F. Writing
The Final Examination will be comprehensive.
Course Requirements:
 Five hours per week including tow hours of language lab study
 To come prepared for each class
 To participate in classroom discussions, role-play, and any other activities
 To take quizzes, chapter tests, hand in personal profile, oral proficiency exam, and
a comprehensive final examination
 To turn in homework and personal profile as assigned at the beginning of class
 To hand in lab books as assigned in the Course Assignment
 Late work will be accepted with a FIVE pts. penalty
 Incomplete work will result in ZERO pts.
Extra Credit: (25 pts.)
Students have the opportunity to select one of two film pertaining to past and present
German history. The tiles are: Sophie Scholl or The lives of others. Students will
receive background information and will be provided with guidelines in respect to
their essay.

Detailed Course Outline
Class Preparation and assignments:
It is essential that students are familiar with the content of each chapter prior to
each class.
At the beginning of class, your instructor will assign homework, materials to be covered
in the next class, and announcements for Quizzes, and personal profile. The quizzes will
contain learned vocabulary and grammar.
Each class will begin with a five-minute warm-up session. After each chapter test,
the instructor will give the results and, if needed, will review sections requiring
additional clarification.
The Extra Credit Project must be submitted on March 19th. (Guidelines are available
from the instructor)
