DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Once again, it gives me great pleasure to provide this annual
report highlighting the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative
Program (CSCP) activities and accomplishments of our students
and faculty over the 2007-2008 academic year. Thanks are also
extended for the financial support from the Heart & Stroke
Foundation of Ontario, Medtronic Canada, and the university which
allowed the CSCP to continue to serve the university community,
enhancing the graduate student experience for all our member
Departments and Faculties.
The CSCP has shown a continued and sustained enrolment since
its inception in 1992 (see graph below), where we began with a
grand total of 5 students! The success of our recruitment initiative
is clearly shown as we now have a total of 56 (37 MSc and 19 PhD) enrolled students. The
level of student satisfaction with the Program continues to be high as expressed during their
annual meeting with the CSCP Student Affairs Committee Chair and the exit surveys we
conduct. It is very satisfying to witness the growth and development of the CSCP over the past
15 years and seeing its’ entrenchment as a successful educational initiative of the Faculty of
Medicine.

Talks continue with our ongoing partnership with the University of Waterloo. We await the
Faculty legal minds to provide us with a final draft of a Memorandum of Agreement and it is my
fervent wish that the upcoming year will see this initiative become a reality.
We continue to experience increased enrolment in our graduate course offerings and now have
fully established web-based learning for the JCV3000 series of graduate courses. Live and
archived seminars are now fully integrated into our JCV3000 level courses, providing state-ofthe-art learning technology for our trainees. I welcome this direction, as do all the students, and
anticipate that this will also dove-tail nicely with our ongoing partnership initiatives.
With the progress made over the past year, our objectives for 2008-2009 are to continue with
the momentum established and to redouble our efforts in areas that have been slow to advance
– as detailed below:
2







Finalize the agreement and launch the joint initiative with the University of Waterloo
Further develop innovative curriculum to more appropriately serve the diverse nature of
this now multi-Faculty graduate training initiative
Continue developing endowments to provide permanent infrastructure support
Maintain active student recruitment
Graduate training grant applications for both local and external agencies
Further develop CME programs in cardiovascular sciences
Maintain high standards of our full web-based courses
As you read through this report, you will see that the Program continues to enrich our trainee’s
experiences. Specific details on all activities can be found on our web site at
www.cscp.utoronto.ca. I would like to once again recognize the outstanding efforts of Victoria
Simpson, our Business Officer, as well as the Executive Committee for their hard work and
contributions that have made the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program the success it
is today. And finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our faculty and students for
another successful year and to those individuals who have continued to provide both moral and
tangible support for this Program.
Dr. Carin Wittnich, O.Ont.
Director, CSCP
Professor of Surgery & Physiology

MISSION STATEMENT
“The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program, approved by the University and Ontario
Council on Graduate Studies in 1992, and listed in the calendar of the School of Graduate
Studies, exists to give formal, organized expression to cardiovascular studies and research at
the graduate level. It builds on the strengths of all participating academic units, and other
agencies, to enhance the visibility of cardiovascular studies and to facilitate collaborative,
interdisciplinary training and research.”
The above mission is achieved by advertising and promoting the importance of, and
opportunities in, cardiovascular studies, by making known the results of such studies, by
recruitment of excellent students, and by coordinating the graduate collaborative program in
cooperation with the academic units in which they are registered. Students in this collaborative
program must fulfill the requirements of their home units as well as the Program. Upon
graduation the notation “Specialization in Cardiovascular Sciences” will appear on the student’s
academic transcript and the Program will present the student with a certificate and gift.

This year's Research Day was again a successful event due to the combined efforts of many
people. The members of the Planning Committee (Albert Tsui, Tenille Ragoonanan, and Laura
Voicu) would like to thank everyone involved in making this day a success, including Drs. Rand
and Babaei, the student presenters, the session Chairs, Shathiyah and Mike, the CSCP
Business Officer, Ms. Victoria Simpson, and Dr. Wittnich, CSCP Director.
Student Forum Night
This event is an excellent opportunity for new students of the CSCP to meet one another and for
senior students to catch up with old friends, and develop relationships with the up and comers.
Discussions range from basic research, laboratory trials and triumphs, to future
academic/career directions. Connections for research collaboration, as well as friendships are
developed, and all those in attendance thoroughly enjoy the festive dinner and the change to
meet other students. Due to a lack of funding we were unable to provide the CSCP student
body with the 2007 CSCP Forum and Dinner. We hope to resume this event in 2008.

Cardiovascular Summer Initiative (CSI) 2008
This summer, the CSCPSA once again organized and ran the very exciting and successful
Cardiovascular Summer Initiative. The series was targeted at undergraduate students involved
in cardiovascular summer research, and aimed to give students a more inclusive feel for the
field and to provide a broader frame of reference than just lab experience alone.
We began with an orientation session that outlined the role
of the CSCP and the goals of our student association.
Altogether, 18 students signed up for the Cardiovascular
Summer Initiative with great student representation from
research hospitals around the Toronto area (TGH, SMH,
Sick Kids, PMH).
The next event was a mini-symposium showcasing the
diversity of research within the CSCP. Six students within
the collaborative program gave presentations: Mike Sellan,
Kieran Quinn, Melanie Henriques, Christy Hamilton, Elissa Tepperman, and Andrew
Ramadeen. The students really enjoyed the talks and demonstrated interest by posing
meaningful questions about research methods and graduate studies in general.
CSI Mini Symposium 2008:
Mike Sellan – ‘The effects of iron-overload on heart function’
CSI Mini Symposium 2008:
Elissa Tepperman – ‘Tacrolimus preserves vasomotor
function and decreases sensitivity to vasospasm’
CSI Mini Symposium 2008:
Andrew Ramadeen – ‘The effect of fish oils on vulnerability in
atrial arrythmias’
8
The following three events were field trips/lab tours. Based on the feedback the CSCPSA
obtained from the graduating students from the year previous, the committee attempted to
structure this year’s outings in such a way that they would incorporate a diverse spectrum of
material relevant to cardiovascular research.
The first event planned by the committee was set for the Surgical Skills Centre at the Mount
Sinai Hospital. Students were kindly greeted by the staff and were informed, in a didactic
lecture, about the complexities of surgical training and the state-of-the-art resources found at
the Mount Sinai teaching hospital. Students were next taken for a tour of the facility, given the
opportunity to watch some medical students dissect various tissues, and provided with the
chance to ask questions on their facilities. Overall this day was well received by both staff and
students.
The second event comprised a tour of the exercise laboratories in the Athletic Centre at the
University of Toronto. Katharine Currie and Marc Busato,
current graduating master’s students in the CSCP, kindly
agreed to provide us with a tour of their research equipment
and materials. Students were split into two groups: in Marc’s
group students learned about VOmax and cardiac output
using a stationary bicycle (CSI students, Anne Battisti [L],
Tommy Rohani [M], with Mark Busato [R]), while in
Katharine’s group
(left) students learned
about blood pressure
and wave forms while she recorded a student's
cardiovascular function (Judy Qiang) while lying
stationary on a bed.
Once again, this tour was very successful. Students
provided excellent feedback and were genuinely
interested in the hands-on aspect of this outing.
The third event organized by the CSCPSA was a tour of the Imaging Centre at St. Michael’s
Hospital. Upon the organization of this event we were fortunate to have the opportunity to have
two physicians, Dr. Louis Wu and Dr. Vikram Prabhudesai, provide lectures and tours of their
facilities. The organization and willingness of the staff to cooperate with the CSCPSA was
excellent. They were timely and extremely generous in providing everyone with a hot lunch,
drink and dessert during the lecture sessions. Subsequent tours of the MRI and CT facilities
were extremely informative. Although both imaging departments were busy, both physicians
went out of their way to give an informative session with Q&As. At the end of the session, both
physicians were presented with a certificate from the CSCPSA in gratitude of their help with the
program.
The summer program wrapped up with student presentations of the work completed during
each of their summer research sessions. Students were able to interact, learn and question the
diversity of research performed by each field incorporated in the summer program.
Subsequently students were presented with certificates and asked to provide feedback on this
year’s program.
9
The overall impression of the summer program was that it was very good. It provided an
enjoyable learning environment and an opportunity to interact with several students outside of
their lab. Each session was informative and well received. The major modification that was
suggested by the student body was to have the sessions spaced out once every week rather
than once every two weeks as done this year. We look forward to seeing this group as well as
some new faces next summer.

Bigelow Book Prize
This prize was established in 1995 by the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program to
recognize and honor a pioneer clinician and scientist in the field of cardiovascular sciences.
Awardees should exemplify the personal traits of Dr. Bigelow - curiosity, drive, and scientific
integrity. The award is given in every year that a qualified student is identified. Qualifications
include sustained academic scientific excellence, innovative experimental approaches, original
discoveries and good scientific productivity. Some weight is given to work that has recognizable
clinical relevance, especially that which promises to improve patient care. The Bigelow Book
Prize consists of 2 books written by Dr. W.G. Bigelow entitled “Cold Hearts” and “Mysterious
Heparin” and a keeper plaque created to honor Dr. Bigelow. Appropriate candidates are
identified and the final decision is made by the Program Committee.

A heart transplant is a priceless gift to a fortunate patient with end-stage heart failure.
Regrettably, transplanted hearts develop a diffuse vasculopathy that limits their longevity. Dr.
Badiwala is dedicated toward a career as a cardiac surgeon-scientist with an interest in
developing novel strategies to preserve endothelial function and prevent cardiac allograft
vasculopathy after heart transplantation. His PhD thesis focuses on evaluating novel
endothelial protective strategies in the context of immunosuppressive therapy, on preventing
neointimal hyperplasia after vascular injury. Dr. Badiwala is also defining the role of a novel
endothelial chemoattractant protein, EGFL7, on the vascular endothelial response to hypoxiareperfusion injury to determine whether it is a novel target for therapeutic intervention. His other
research interests include investigating novel cardiac and endothelial protection strategies
during donor heart preservation and cardiac transplantation.
Lorne Phenix Graduate Award
This award was made possible by a generous donation in the memory of Mr. Lorne Phenix by
Mrs. Geraldine Phenix. It is her hope that this award will focus attention on the issue of heart
disease – which is still the #1 killer of both men and women in Canada. In addition, women who
have heart problems are at least equal if not at greater risk than men and Mrs. Phenix hopes
that this award will serve to encourage trainees to pursue this area of research to address this
particular problem. It is awarded to a graduate student in the Faculty of Medicine on the basis
of research and academic excellence. The award consists of a cash prize and certificate and is
presented to the recipient at the Annual Student Research Day. Appropriate candidates are
identified and a winner is selected by a subcommittee chaired by Dr. Donna Stewart. This
award is presented at the Annual Student Research Day.

Emma O’Donnell is a PhD candidate in the Department of Exercise Sciences at the University
of Toronto. Under the supervision of Dr. Jack Goodman and Dr. Paula Harvey, Emma’s thesis
work is looking at estrogenic mechanisms of cardiovascular regulation in estrogen deficient
premenopausal women.
Discordance between the known biology of estrogen and the results of clinical trials of
postmenopausal hormone therapy underscore the need to better characterize, in controlled
mechanistic studies, estrogens multiple actions in human health and disease. Exerciseassociated amenorrhea (EAA) is a common and reversible cause of estrogen deficiency in
premenopausal women thought to be due to energy deficiency. Importantly, premenopausal
women with EAA have estrogen deficiency similar to postmenopausal women and thus provide
a unique model for examining the cardiovascular effects of estrogen independent of the effects
of aging and the presence of other co-morbidities.
Emma's previous work has shown that the women with EAA have disordered regional blood
flow, blood pressure and heart rate when compared to exercising normally menstruating
women. Her research will go on to examine: 1) the effects of estrogen on vascular function and
oxidative stress, as well as neurohumoral mechanisms of vascular function and blood pressure
regulation; and 2) to compare these responses in women with EAA in an estrogen deplete and
replete environment. This will be achieved by testing women with EAA both before and after 4
weeks of transdermal estrogen therapy. Her work will also investigate whether estrogen
deficiency due to EAA obviates the widely recognized cardiovascular benefits of habitual
aerobic exercise and premenopausal status, and whether this might contribute to premature
development of a cardiovascular phenotype more typically seen in postmenopausal women.
Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Funds (OSOTF) Award
The OSOTF award refers to a class of awards that have resulted from the Ontario government’s
“matching” program. Under the program every dollar of donation received for student
assistance has been matched by the government as well as the university on a dollar-for-dollar
basis. The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program participates in this program. There
are two major conditions for all OSOTF awards; recipients must be Ontario residents and
demonstrate financial need. However, the Program has additional eligibility criteria that must be
adhered to, including excellence in science and academic performance. One competition is
held per academic year. The applications are handled centrally through the Office of the
Associate Dean, Inter-Faculty and Graduate Affairs. Applications pertaining to the CSCP are
sent to us and are then adjudicated by a subcommittee chaired by Dr. Margaret Rand.
Committee recommendations are then forwarded to the OSOTF Awards Committee (Faculty of
Medicine). Three applications were received for this competition. Unfortunately, two of the
applications were ineligible. This year’s recipient was Nesime Askin, PhD candidate,
Department of Physiology.
Ontario Graduate School Science and Technology (OGSST)
The OGSST program is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies in science and
technology. The program is supported through funds provided by the Ministry of Training,
Colleges and Universities and by funds raised by the University of Toronto and the Heart &
Stroke Foundation of Ontario. To be awarded to graduate students at the University of Toronto
who are pursuing cardiovascular/stroke research. Students must have maintained an overall Aaverage over the last two years of study at the post-secondary level and exhibit research
ability/potential, good communication skills and interpersonal/leadership abilities. The following

CSCP STUDENT ASSOCIATION SPONSORED ACTIVITIES
Circulation Rounds
The CSCP Student Association organizes and runs this event which highlights the diverse
nature of research carried out by our faculty. These academic rounds rotate through the various
research sites at the University of Toronto and each event is hosted by a faculty member where
their research focus is the topic of the day. The goal of this event is to provide graduate
students, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, undergraduates and project/summer
students with the chance to develop an appreciation of the vast range of excellent research
being conducted in our widespread community.
The first Circulation Rounds for the 2007-2008 academic year was given by Dr. SteffenSebastian Bolz where he talked on “Light and Shadow - The Effects of Sphingosine-1Phosphate (S1P) in Terminal Arteries”. Dr. Bolz’ primary research interests lie in understanding
the mechanisms that control smooth muscle cell tone in terminal arteries, which is of
considerable importance, as it directly relates to the regulation of systemic blood pressure and
tissue perfusion. His lecture focused on the mechanisms of blood pressure regulation by
sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) in terminal arteries. Dr. Bolz previously identified the S1P
signaling pathway as a prominent regulator of vascular tone, and he currently investigates the
role of this pathway in several types of terminal arteries, including those isolated from skeletal
muscle, the mesentery, the cerebral circulation, and the inner ear. Dr. Bolz is an intriguing and
extremely entertaining speaker. It brought about plenty of discussion among the attendees, who
were particularly curious about the potential clinical applications of targeting the S1P pathways.
The second speaker was Dr. Bradley Strauss, the Reichmann Research Chair at the University
of Toronto and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. As an interventional cardiologist, Dr.
Strauss’ research interests lie in the field of vascular biology and include chronic total
occlusions, restenosis, smooth muscle cell function, and experimental arterial response to
injury. The seminar, entitled “Researching Chronic Total Occlusions: Shedding Light on a Dark
Place”, began with an introduction to the practice of interventional cardiology and the difficulties
that many cardiologists face due to the limitations of current 2D imaging. Consequently, novel
coronary imaging techniques designed in response to this problem were described. The
seminar also included a discussion of Dr. Strauss’ research, including angiogenic therapy and
the use of collagenases to help treat patients with luminal occlusions. Many of the attendees
enjoyed the clinical relevance of the seminar.
The third speaker was Dr. Scott Heximer, Assistant Professor and Tier II Canada Research
Chair in Cardiovascular Pathology, where he talked on “Mind the GAP: The Role of RGS
Proteins in the Control of Cardiovascular Pathology”. Dr. Heximer’s research focuses on the
mechanisms by which cardiovascular tissues regulate hetero-trimeric G-protein signaling. His
talk defined the functions of an important class of G-protein regulatory proteins, called RGS
proteins, in the cardiovascular system. Dr. Heximer began by giving an overview of RGS
proteins and their general function as negative modulators of G-protein activity. He then
discussed his lab’s work elucidating the molecular mechanisms and cardiovascular implications
of different RGS proteins through the use of gene knock-outs and physiological measures.
Specifically, the Heximer lab has discovered a role for RGS2 in the control of blood pressure
and vasoconstriction, RGS4 in parasympathetic signaling and heart rate control and hopes to
clarify the cardiovascular role of RGS5. The seminar and following discussion were wellattended and received.
