Background
UNICEF works with families, communities and governments in more than 190 countries worldwide to
protect and promote the rights of all children. We help governments to build schools, train teachers and
provide textbooks so that every child can get an education. We support families and communities to
care for children and protect them against exploitation and abuse, fulfilling their right to a childhood. We
work with partners to ensure that every child has the opportunity to take part in sport and play.
We support governments to build and equip health systems, train health workers and provide food and
clean water, so every child can be as healthy as possible. UNICEF is also the world’s largest distributer of
vaccines to the developing world. In 2008, we supplied vaccines for 56 per cent of the world’s children,
protecting them against death from preventable diseases.
UNICEF UK is a registered charity in the UK which raises funds for UNICEF’s vital work for children and
also advocates for children’s rights both nationally and internationally.
The Public Fundraising team is a major fundraising team at UNICEF UK and sits within the Individual
Giving Directorate (IG) along with Direct Marketing, Trading, Marketing Data and Analysis and the Digital
Hub. The team, which scales around major projects, currently comprises 8 staff, is responsible for
community fundraising and events, raising money through schools, churches, students, organizations,
individual fundraisers and running/challenge events. With the appointment of this position, the strategic
project management of emergencies will become a key responsibility of the Head of Public Fundraising
along with managing dedicated project managers of time-bound initiatives (such as the biennial telethon
SoccerAid) and hot-housing new initiatives within fundraising.

UNICEF UK raises at least £3 million a year from emergencies which can rise to £18m+ if major natural
disasters occur. With DFID Match-funding, Soccer Aid 2012 has raised in excess of £4.5 million.
