In Edwidge Danticat’s novel “Krik? Krak!” she describes the hardships and the
tortures that women were facing in Haiti. Danticat showed it by the way women were
treated, the responsibility of women taking care of family, and their ancestor.
In Krik? Krak! Edwidge Danticat showed the ways women were treated in Haiti.
For example in her short story “Night Women” danticat says “One of my suitors gave it to
him to plug to his ears so he can stay asleep while mommy works” (85). Men use women to
have sex in that story. In Danticat short story “Nineteen-thirty seven” she says “All these
women were here (prison) for the same reason. They were said to have been seen at night
rising from the grounds like birds on fire” (38).
In Edwidge Danticat’s novel Krik? Krak! she showed the responsibilities of women
taking care of families in Haiti.Danticat also talks about women defending there children.
For example in “Wall of fire rising” she says “For a young boy to be on any list that might
influence his destiny” (66). Danticat also talked about the struggles of raising babies. For
example on “Between the pool and the gardenia” she says that “In the city, I hear they
throw out whole entire children” (93).
In Krik? Krak! She talks about the women’s ancestor of Haiti. For example in
“Epilogue: women like us” she says “The women in your family has never lost touch with
one another” (222). Danticat have this good quote for all women generation. “Death is a
path we take to meet to the other side” (Danticat 222).Also in Epilogue she put all the
women from the other stories made them all into one family.
Due to all the stories in Krik! Krak? This is why this book is a national book award
finalist. Did you know that edwidge danticat was born in 1969 so she wasn’t even born
