A final bow
In 1978, we first walked through the doors of the Omaha
Community Playhouse hired as actors by the Playhouse
professional touring wing, the Nebraska Theatre Caravan. Even
then the facility was impressive and that was years before the
1985 expansion, which doubled the size of the theatre and
created the amazing space that we all know today.
Little did we know that the 9-month contract that we signed would
evolve into a 30-year relationship with OCP that would completely
change the direction of our lives. As Omaha grew into a more
culturally diverse city, so did the Playhouse, and one of our most
challenging and fulfilling tasks has been to honor its mission to
enrich the lives of audiences and actors through entertainment
and thought-provoking stories.
We and the play selection committee are very excited to bring
you this new season of plays and musicals that, we hope, will
delight and challenge you. Personally, we couldn’t be prouder!
As Mrs. Cratchit says to her son Tiny Tim, “Quite a ride, Sir” and
for the two of us, it has been all that and so much more.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you all.

Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and 96
international awards, Les Misérables is the world’s longest
running and most loved musical. Set in 19th Century France, Les
Mis is the epic tale of Jean Valjean as he breaks his parole and is
pursued by Inspector Javert while caring for the young orphaned
Cosette. This classic score features songs such as “I Dreamed a
Dream,” “On My Own,” “Bring Him Home” and “One Day More.”
Les Mis has thrilled audiences for more than 25 years; don’t miss
this global sensation at the Omaha Community Playhouse.
Meet Bessie and Sadie Delany. At ages 101 and 103, these
resilient African-American sisters have lived through historic
events, such as the Civil Rights Movement, Jim Crow laws and
women’s suffrage. These cultural pioneers never married, stating
“we were too smart, too independent for most men” and pursued
education and careers during a time when it was unheard of to do so.
Their endearing stories are humorous and historical as they invite the
audience into their home for an evening of memories in this touching,
biographical, two-person play, starring real-life sisters Camille
Metoyer Moten and Lanette Metoyer Moore.

Ella is the powerhouse story and musical revue of iconic Jazz
singer Ella Fitzgerald. As this legend prepares for her most
challenging performance, she recalls her life’s tribulations and
how she found solace in music. Ella’s renowned voice transports
audiences to another time with classics such as “A-Tisket,
A-Tasket,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “Cheek to
Cheek” and “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off.” This moving and
dazzling revue will astound and delight audiences.

Bernard has the perfect life. He is handsome, successful and
engaged to THREE beautiful air hostesses that have no suspicion
of his two-timing ways. While two are up in the air, the other is in
his arms. “It all boils down to juggling timetables and a reliable
maid who never forgets to change the photographs.” With
this foolproof plan, what could possibly go wrong? Enjoy the
absolute hilarity of this door-slamming farce as Bernard, his naïve
childhood friend and his temperamental maid find themselves
in the apartment dealing with all three fiancées. Will Bernard
be caught in his web of deceit? Or will he continue to live the
bachelor’s dream?

This season’s offerings in the
Howard Drew Theatre continue
to fulfill the original mission of the
theatre to provide the community
with offerings that are new,
adventuresome and experimental.
All of the Drew shows this season
have debuted within the past 10
years. They include a Pulitzer
Prize and Tony Award-winning
title, a quirky romantic comedy, a
conversation between two historical
icons and a fast-paced legal thriller.
Audiences should use discretion
as these plays may include strong
language and adult content.

Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan; Music and lyrics by Mel Brooks
If you are an adventurous theatregoer who loves contemporary,
nationally acclaimed, high-quality
works that push the envelope,
IT’S ALIVE! The Mel Brooks masterpiece Young Frankenstein is
the riotously funny story of Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen)
and his adventures as he embraces the family name and creates
a monster with his partners, hunchbacked Igor (that’s Eye-gore),
voluptuous Inga and in spite of his prudish fiancée Elizabeth.
Packed with delightfully nutty songs and flashy dance numbers
such as “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” Young Frankenstein is monstrously
clever and fun.

Sam, a one-hit-wonder songwriter, has been married to his original
muse, Rose, for 25 years. But lately, Sam’s obsessive hunt for
his next hit song has smoldered their romantic spark. On their
anniversary cruise, Sam jumps overboard when he is lured by the
most incredible song coming from the sea. While washed ashore, he
encounters a video Solitaire-playing Siren who has stepped out of
Greek mythology and into modern times. She helps him remember
why Rose is, and always has been, the love of his life. Find out if
Sam and Rose can find each other again in a sea of technology
and past loves in this quirky story full of witty banter and fun.
Freud’s Last Session is an astute and witty conversation between
scholar C.S. Lewis and Dr. Sigmund Freud shortly before Freud’s
death. Set in London at the beginning of World War II, the threat
of bomber planes and radio warnings periodically interrupt their
provocative and humorous conversation covering normally taboo
topics such as God, religion, sex and war. This play will engage
audiences, provoke thought and seek truth.

The 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner, Next to Normal is a
deeply moving rock musical and raw account of a family dealing
with mental illness, tragedy and the realities of modern society.
An overly medicated mother tries to cope with bipolar disorder
as her family struggles to maintain normalcy in their suburban
home. A hard-driving rock score with heart-wrenching ballads
make this show unlike any other. Next to Normal is gripping,
groundbreaking contemporary theatre.
Race is the fast-paced legal thriller that tackles issues of sexual
assault, gender discrimination and race. When a wealthy white
man is charged with raping a black woman, he approaches a
small law firm for representation. The firm’s partners—one white,
one black—scramble to decide if they want to represent the
accused. In a riveting, red-hot cross-examination, exhilarating
discoveries are made as the attorneys search for the truth…or
at least a solid defense.
This production contains strong language and is intended only for mature audiences.
