Grades: All prerequisite course grades must be C or higher (a grade of C- will not be accepted). To apply to the
program you must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the Natural Sciences prerequisite courses, and a minimum GPA of 3.0
in the General Education prerequisite courses. However, a science GPA of 3.0 is not competitive as the average science
GPA for the Fall 2013 admits was 3.85 and for General Education admits was 3.89.
Repeated Courses: For admission into the basic nursing program, calculation of the grade point average for prerequisite
courses repeated at CSULB or transferred into CSULB from another college or university will follow CSULB policy as
described in the annual Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog
Course in Progress: One course can be in progress at the time you submit an application. Admission is contingent upon your
completing the course with a grade of C or better. Admission GPA for an in-progress course will be calculated as a grade of C.
Co-Requisite Courses: Psychology 100 and Sociology 100 must be taken prior to taking Nursing 341 (your 3rd Nursing
Program semester). If you have not taken them prior to admission, you will be required to take them your 1 st and 2nd Nursing
Program semesters or you will not be allowed to advance to 3 rd semester program courses. Nursing 302, Nursing 305 and
Nutrition 339 will be taken during your first semester if you have not completed them prior to admission.
Application Procedure
Attend a Student Information Session: Before submitting an application for admission to the nursing program, you should attend an
informational session where the application process will be explained. Time will be allotted for questions. See information
session dates on the front page.
Apply to the University as a Nursing major: You must apply to and meet the university admission requirements prior to
applying to the nursing program. Applicants must apply on-line at http:www.csumentor.edu. Submit one set of official
transcripts from all college level work to the University when requested to do so by Enrollment Services. Transfer students must
also submit a supplemental application to CSULB when requested to do so by Enrollment Services For further information on

Applying to the School of Nursing
This is a separate application from your admission to the University. Complete the nursing application and submit it with a
set of official transcripts for all college work.
Course Equivalencies–For science courses NOT taken at CSULB, please check to make sure the course(s) you have taken are
equivalent. For most local community colleges and other local colleges you can check this at http://assist.org or on our science
prerequisite chart located on our website. For college courses not found at assist.org or on our chart, please contact Monalisa Ward
at 562-985-2201.
Course in Progress: Attach any proof of enrollment for your course in progress.
General Assessment Test (TEAS) - All applicants must take the TEAS test prior to the application deadline. Multiple TEAS
dates are offered during August and January. It is advisable to sign up early to guarantee applicants can take the test on the date
they want to. If registering by mail, please follow the mail in deadline listed on the TEAS application form. Also applicants
may sign up in the Nursing office in Room 8, one day before the test date if space is still available. The cost of the test is
$50.00. There is no limit on how many times applicants can take the TEAS; however, it is the applicants responsibility to
indicate which test date we are to use to calculate applicants’ rating. Applicants must score at least 70% to be eligible to submit
an application. However, a TEAS score of 70% is not competitive as the average TEAS score for the Fall 2013 admits
was 86.52%.
Selection Criteria
A personal profile will be developed for each applicant with points earned from:
GPA in the prerequisite science
4 points maximum courses (minimum 3.0 gpa)
GPA in the prerequisite general
2 points maximum education courses (minimum 3.0 gpa)

Candidates with the highest cumulative scores, based upon their personal profile, must participate in a mandatory faculty
interview. The interviews will be held approximately thirty days after the nursing application deadline. After the interviews,
successful candidates will be offered admission into the program.
Letters of reference and testimonials are not a factor in the application process. Please do not submit these items.
Notification of Admission Status: Seventy (72) students are admitted each Fall and Spring semester. Candidates will be
notified by the School of Nursing of their admission status by mail by the 4th week of April and November.
Alternates: An alternate list will be selected. An alternate is admitted to replace a candidate who withdraws from the program
before the end of the first week of the semester. Because there is no waiting list, alternates not admitted will need to re-apply to
be considered for admission the next semester.
Instructions for Candidates Who Have Submitted a Supplemental Nursing Application for a Previous Term: Applicants
will need to fill out another application, but they do not need to resubmit any supplemental documents that we already have on
file (TEAS score, transcripts) unless there has been a change since the last application. However, applicants should contact the
nursing office to find out how they can become for competitive before they submit a new application.
Trimester Program: In addition to our traditional six semester-three year program, the School of Nursing offers students who
have been accepted into the program the option of entering a trimester program that can be completed in just two years. The
curriculum in this program is exactly the same with the exception that the course work is scheduled over the summer. Selection
for this option will be done by lottery at the mandatory new student orientation.
Additional Information
General Education: Applicants do not have to complete their general education requirements before they enter the nursing
program. A few of the nursing prerequisites courses also meet general education requirements.
Health Requirements: Upon admission to the program, all students will be required to pass a departmental health examination
and will be evaluated on their ability to meet the School’s Essential Performance Guidelines. For more information, see

Background Checks: Students who are accepted into the program must submit to the School of Nursing a criminal background
check and potential drug screening. Students must complete their background checks prior to the mandatory orientation meeting
in June
Licensed Vocational Nurses
LVNs can seek advanced placement. An LVN advisor is available to assist LVNs with the application procedure. LVNs who
are only seeking RN Licensure can use the thirty-unit option.
Second Degree Applicants
The Basic/Trimester BSN Program is open to both undergraduate and second degree seekers. However, we will also accept
applications from second degree applicants for our Entry Level MSN Program. This program only admits in the Fall every
three years. Please contact our Office for further information.
Foreign Students & Non-Resident Students
Foreign Student Applicants: Prior to submitting an application to the School of Nursing, applicants must have all non U.S.
transcripts evaluated by a Credential Evaluation Service to confirm their academic equivalency to educational standards of
Regionally accredited colleges and universities in the United States. Please contact the Nursing Office for a list of credentialed
evaluation service companies. Please submit the evaluation report with your nursing application.
Non-Resident Applicants: Our program is under impaction; therefore, we may only consider California residents for
admission. However, we may admit up to two highly qualified F-1 Visa students each semester.

Academic Progress for Pre-Nursing Majors Effective Fall 2013 – Rev. 03/13/2013
Bachelor of Science in Nursing – Basic (NRSGBS01)
In order to be considered for admission to the Nursing major, CSULB students must be declared as pre-nursing students. Pre-nursing students must
complete a series of prerequisite courses: written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, STAT 108, BIOL 207, BIOL 208, CHEM
140, and MICR 200. Each course must be completed with a “C” or better grade; when all prerequisites are completed the GPA for the prerequisite
courses must be “B” or better (3.0 or better).
Applicants to the nursing major are normally admitted by the time they reach junior standing and must apply before they have earned 75 Timely
Graduation units. Students who have earned 75 or more Timely Graduation units at CSULB are not eligible to apply to Nursing. Pre-nursing
students should note that withdrawing or repeating courses to improve their grades or GPA will result in poor academic progress and will
likely make them ineligible for admission.
Academic Progress Rules for Pre-Nursing Majors (NRSGPR00U1)
Effective Fall 2011, Pre-nursing majors must complete the following requirements within four semesters of being admitted as a Pre-Nursing
major. Students who declare Pre-Nursing in their sophomore year will need to complete these requirements more quickly. Some students
may need to take courses during Summer Session to meet these requirements. Pre-nursing students who have not met these Academic Progress Rules
must declare a new major or meet with an academic advisor to determine if the student’s performance in courses merits an additional semester.
Students who persistently fail to meet the Academic Progress Rules will be required to declare a new major.

At the end of the second semester, Pre-Nursing students must have a grade of “C” or better in general education certified written communication,
oral communication, critical thinking, and STAT 108 courses as well as a combined GPA of 3.0 or better in these prerequisite courses.
At the end of the fourth semester, Pre-Nursing students must have a “C” grade or better in BIOL 207, BIOL 208, CHEM 140, and MICR 200 as well
as a combined GPA of 3.0 or better in these prerequisite courses.
Current Students Wishing to Declare Pre-Nursing Major
Current CSULB students wishing to declare the Pre-Nursing major must meet the following requirements by the end of their second semester to be
considered for the Pre-Nursing program. Students who are required to enroll in a developmental math class (MAPB 1, 7, or 11) may be given a third
semester to complete the requirements. These requirements include the completion of the following classes with a grade of C or better with a
combined GPA in these four classes of 3.0 or better and an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
Written Communication (A1), Oral Communication (A2), Critical Thinking (A3), STAT 108 (B2)
Students will be required to meet with the Pre-Nursing advisor before a change of major to Pre-Nursing will be approved.
Applying to the Nursing Program
By no later than the beginning of the fifth semester, Pre-Nursing students must apply to become Nursing majors. Candidates must complete a
General Assessment Test and should contact the school of Nursing to learn how to take the General Assessment Test. In reviewing applications, a
personal profile is developed for each applicant based on GPA in prerequisite courses and the General Assessment Test. The largest weight in the
profile is derived from the prerequisite science courses’ GPA, with typical grade point averages for these courses being 3.50 or higher and no grades
below a “C.” Candidates with the highest profile scores are selected for admission. It is anticipated that about seventy-two (72) students will be
admitted each Fall and Spring semester from hundreds of applicants.
Pre-Nursing students with an ELM score that places them in MAPB 1 or MAPB 7 or MAPB 11 may petition for an additional semester.
Please review the following Advising Guidelines to ensure Pre-Nursing students meet the deadlines stated in the Academic Progress Rules for
Pre-Nursing Majors.
Pre-Nursing Advising Guidelines – Fall 2013 – Rev. 03/13/2013
1.
Effective Fall 2011, students who have fulfilled a prerequisite GE category or science (grade of C or better) can no longer take a
second class in that prerequisite GE category or retake a science class at a community college in an attempt to raise their grade
and GPA for admission to the Nursing program. Only a passing grade (C or better) in the first course taken in the category will be
considered for admission to Nursing.
2.
Students who completed a second class in a prerequisite GE category or repeated a science class prior to Fall 2011 will be allowed
to post their highest grade on their application.
3.
Students will still be allowed to repeat a failed class for grade forgiveness as stated in the CSULB Repetition of Courses Policy.
Pre-nursing students should note that withdrawing or repeating courses to improve their grades or GPA will result in a
failure to meet the Academic Progress Rules and will likely make pre-nursing students ineligible for admission to Nursing.
4.
Students should not be advised to fail or withdraw from a class if they are earning a “C” so they can repeat it for a better grade.
Students repeating classes take seats away from other students attempting to get in a class for the first time and results in
poor academic progress. A grade of “C” will not disqualify a student from the Nursing program as long as both the prerequisite
GE and Science GPA is 3.0 or higher.
5.
Students will no longer be required to submit a copy of their high school transcripts for AP classes. Students who have AP credit
in ENG 100 or STAT 108 will now have the prerequisite GE GPA determined by the grades earned in the other prerequisite GE
categories. AP credit in any other math class will no longer be accepted by Nursing.
6.
Students do not need to take any additional science classes other than the four required prerequisites (CHEM 140, BIOL 207,
BIOL 208, & MICR 200) to satisfy GE requirements. The seventeen (17) required prerequisite science units will satisfy both the
Life Science and Physical Science (B1) requirements.
7.
Students should take PSY 100 & SOC 100 to meet the Social Sciences and Citizenship (D2) GE requirement.
8.
If Lifelong Learning & Self Development (E) has not been completed students should take NUTR132 as it is good preparation for
NUTR 339.
9.
Students should be advised to take STAT 108 to meet the Mathematics/Quantitative (B2).
10. Students should be encouraged to complete as many GE requirements as possible prior to starting the Nursing program so they
can concentrate on their Nursing classes once they are accepted into the program.

1.
What programs are offered by nursing school?
The School of Nursing offers a Basic/Trimester Bachelor of Science, a Entry Level Master of Science and a RN to Bachelor of Science. The Basic/Trimester
BSN Program is open to both undergraduate and second degree seekers. The Entry Level MSN Program is for students who have already earned either a
BS or BA in another field. The RN to BSN program is open to undergraduates and second degree seekers who have a California Registered Nurse’s license.
2.
When and how do I apply to the nursing program?
If you are applying to the Basic and Trimester BSN Programs, refer to the packet for Spring and Fall application deadlines. The Entry Level MSN
Program only admits every three years, The next projected entry will be for Fall 2016. Please refer to the packet for deadlines. You may submit an application
with only one prerequisite course in progress. You must receive a grade of C or higher in the course that is in progress to be admitted.
3.
Is there a waiting list to enter your nursing program?
We do not have a waiting list. We use a point system to find the best qualified students for admission each semester
4.
If I applied last year and was not selected, does my application automatically get considered for next semester?
No! You must submit a new application for each admission cycle.
5.
Can international students apply?
The program can only admit 2 international students a semester to the Basic/Trimester BSN Programs. The top two international students will be offered
admission into the program. The Entry Level MSN Program is for California residents only.

AB 540 Students
At this time, we cannot consider AB 540 students for admission into our Nursing Program.
“ Nonresident students meeting the criteria (for AB 540 status) will be exempted from the payment of nonresident tuition, but they will not be
classified as California residents. They continue to be ‘nonresidents’.” (Exemption request form)

Can out of state residents apply?
No. At this time, due to impaction, only California state residents can be considered for admission.
8.
Can I apply to both the Basic BSN program and the Entry Level MSN?
No. We can only process one application at a time from an applicant.
9.
Is it difficult to get into the program?
Yes! More students apply to the CSULB’s School of Nursing than there are spaces available. PLAN AHEAD! The higher your grades, the better your
chances are of being admitted to the program. Also, take your prerequisite courses as soon as possible and apply to the School of Nursing when you have
completed them or are enrolled in your LAST prerequisite course.
10. How does the School of Nursing select applicants for admission?
The Student Affairs Admissions Committee looks at several factors when considering which applicants will be admitted. The criteria for selection out of 10
possible points are:
a.) TEAS Assessment Overall Test Score (2 points max)
b.) GPA in the science prerequisite courses (4 points max)
c.) GPA in the G E prerequisite courses (2 points max)
d.) General Assessment Math Score (2 points max)

How many students do you accept, and how often are students admitted?
We admit 72 students to begin Basic/Trimester BSN classes each fall and spring semester. We admit 48 Entry Level MSN each fall when funding is
available.
12. What if I took a prerequisite course at another college or university?
Prerequisite courses are listed in the application packet. Many colleges and universities can tell you which transfer to CSULB due to contractual agreements.
It is very important that prerequisite courses are equivalent to the CSULB courses listed on the application. Do not assume that the courses you took will be
equivalent to CSULB’s courses. Also, do not assume a class is an equivalent even if it is accepted by another nursing program. If the course is not listed at
assist.org, or on our science prerequisite chart located on our website, you must submit the course syllabus to the School of Nursing for evaluation.
12. Do I have to take the prerequisite courses at CSULB?
No. Students may take the prerequisites at any college or university as long as the courses taken are equivalent in content and units to those listed in the
application brochure. Many equivalencies are obtained by submitting a course description and course syllabus to our nursing department.
13. Can I take a second GE course in each category to improve my pre-nursing GPA calculation?
The first GE course taken which fulfills a GE category requirement will be used for the Pre-NRSG GPA calculation effective Fall 2011.
14. Do you accept AP English, Calculus, Statistics and Psychology?
Yes. Students receive credit that the requirement has been met. However, we calculate students’ ratings without these courses.
15. Is there a time limit on when I took my prerequisites?
Yes. All natural sciences should have been taken within the last five years.
16. If I have more than one prerequisite in progress, can I still apply for admission?
No, you can only have one prerequisite in progress on the application deadline date. The course in progress is considered a C for rating calculation.
17. What courses can I take after my prerequisite course work is completed?
Many students like to complete their general education courses before entering the nursing program. This will allow them to focus on the nursing courses
and be ready for graduation as soon as the nursing courses are finished.
18. What GPA do I need to apply to the nursing program?
For both the Basic/Trimester and Entry Level MSN, all prerequisite courses must be C or higher. A grade of C- is not acceptable. Students must have a
minimum GPA of 3.0 in each of their science and their general education prerequisite courses. However, the science GPA average Fall 2013 was
3.85. The higher the grades the better the applicants’ chances are of being admitted to the program. The Entry Level MSN applicants must have earned a
CUM GPA of 3.0 in their BA/BS or MS/MA degree.
19. How long will it take me to complete the BSN Program?
Students admitted to the Basic BSN Program take six semesters to complete the nursing courses. The Trimester program takes 4 semesters and two
summers. The Entry Level MSN Program takes 4 semesters. The RN to BSN program takes approximately 4 semesters to complete.
20. Can I attend courses on a part-time basis?
For the basic BSN program, each semester is scheduled for 15 or 16 units. Some students take general courses during the summer or winter break to
decrease the number of units during the regular semester. If students must be out a semester, the leave of absence procedure must be followed. For the Entry
Level MSN program, each semester is scheduled for 22-23 units. Entry Level MSN students attend summer and winter intersessions.
21. Are there any nursing courses in the evening?
Nursing courses are usually offered during the day or early evening. Lecture and lab classes are offered one or two days a week. Clinical classes are offered
Monday through Sunday during day or evening shifts.
22. Can I take the state board exam before I graduate?
No. The NCLEX can only be taken after your BSN has been awarded by the university.
23. What if I have my LVN already?
LVNs, who are accepted for admission, can have Nursing 200 waived. Two spaces are reserved each semester for LVN admissions. After you have
submitted an LVN application, official transcripts and TEAS results, you will speak with the LVN nursing advisor who will help you plan your program and
get you on the LVN waiting list.
24. What if I have my RN already?
A.D.N.-RN students enter with 56 units of transferable lower division credit. Fourteen additional units may be given for lower division general education
course work. Up to 70 total units may be transferred. RNs should be GE certified at the community college prior to application to CSULB. The RN
Pathway program has been developed for the A.D.N.-RN student. The first year is a bridge year. Some classes may be taken with the basic students while
others are designed to help transition students to the BSN level. All students merge during the senior year.
25. Are there nursing classes in the summer?
Yes, students in the Trimester option and Entry Level MSN will attend in the summer.
26. When can I meet with a nursing counselor?
There are group counseling sessions each semester. It is recommended that you attend one of these sessions prior to submitting your application to the
nursing department. Once you have this information, a personal appointment can be made by calling 562-985-2201 or emailing monalisa.ward@csulb.edu if
you have additional questions.
27. Does acceptance into the program mean that I am automatically accepted to the University?
No. You must file three separate applications (two for CSULB and one for the SON) by the deadlines required for each. Check the CSULB website
(www.csulb.edu) for the University application deadline.
28. Where do I send my official transcripts?
It is recommended that you have your official transcripts sent directly to you and that you attach one set of official unopened transcripts to your nursing
program application, and submit one set to the University. ELM applicants only need to submit a complete set to Enrollment Services. They do not
need to submit a set to the SON.
29. Can I take the TEAS more than once and if I can take it more than once, which score will be used?
You may take the TEAS more than once. We will use the test date that will yield you the highest rating.
30. When is the TEAS offered?
Multiple TEAS dates are offered during August and January. If the TEAS was not taken at CSULB, applicants must arrange to have official TEAS scores
sent by atitesting.com to CSULB.
31. What if I want to transfer from another nursing program to your program?
Transfer students are taken on space availability only. Write a letter of interest to the Undergraduate Director, submit letter of recommendation from current
Nursing Dean/Chair, and submit official transcripts along with nursing course syllabi. Fill out a transfer application. After your file is reviewed, the
Undergraduate Director will meet with you to discuss your options.
32. Do I need to submit letters of references?
Letters of reference and testimonials are not a factor in the basic BSN or ELM application process. Please do not submit these items.
32. For the Entry Level MSN, do I need to take the GRE?
No. The GRE is not a factor in the ELM application process.
33. Can I substitute Anthropology for Sociology?
No. We only accept a Sociology 100 equivalent course. Anthropology is not equivalent to Sociology 100.
