Turkey and its Environs
29 June -4 July 2015
(A Kadir Has University and Coventry University Joint Summer Course)
This course is designed for undergraduate and graduate students in the disciplines of International
Relations, European Studies, Political Science, economics, and Turkish Studies. The aim of the
course is to present a substantive overview of the drivers of Turkey’s foreign policy in particular
in relationship with its neighborhoods -- Western Europe, the Black Sea Region, the Caucasus
and Russia, the Greater Middle East, and the Unted States. The course is also meant to present an
overview of the domestic context in terms of its politics; democracy; gender relations; the role of
the media; and the influence of Istanbul. The economic and financial context both domestically
and internationally will also be assessed. Finally, the course will conclude with a debate
regarding where Turkey is heading based on the presentations given during the week. The course
will be supported by guest lecturers with requisite expertise and a comprehensive reading list.
It is designed to take place over the course of 6 days (24.5 hours in total). It will include a city
tour and a goodbye lunch where certificates of attendance will be handed out to the participants.
