Chapters 3 & 4
-Given 2 velocities, be able to determine the resultant.
-Given 2 distances with direction, be able to determine displacement relative to
original position-including angle.
-Given an angle and the length of the resultant, be able to calculate horizontal and
vertical displacement.
-Given 2 distances and an angle, be able to find the resultant. Example- 25m at
55degrees N of W, then 10m west.
-Know what the path of a projectile is.
-Given an angle, an initial speed, and a time, be able to calculate height using what
you know about projectile motion.
-Know what causes acceleration.
-Know what field forces are.
-Know what contact forces are.
-Given a free-body diagram with the forces on it, be able to determine which force is
the Normal force, Gravitational force, Force of friction, and Applied force.
-Given mass and acceleration of an object, but able to calculate net force.
-Given two forces applied to an object at right angles to each other, be able to
determine the magnitude of the resultant acceleration of the object.
-Know Newton’s 3 Laws of motion. (know the wording as well as the formulas)
-Given a weight in Newtons, an angle the force is being applied, the force that is
being applied, be able to determine the Normal force.
Practice Questions-A dog is swimming up a river at a rate of 10 m/s relative to the shore. The river is
moving at a rate of 5 m/s in the opposite direction. What is the resultant velocity of
the dog?
-A person runs 200 meters to the north, the turns and runs 500 meters to the east.
What is the directional displacement relative the the runners starting points?
-A giant is walking your dog. The leash is tied to the giant’s waist. The leash is 50m
long, and the angle between the giant and the leash is 35 degrees. What is the
distance between the ground and the giant’s waist?
-A person walks 200 meters in a direction that is 47 degrees N of W. They then walk
174 meters to the west. What is the displacement, including angle, from the starting
point?
-A ball is kicked at an angle of 25 degrees above the horizontal form the top edge of
a building, with an initial speed of 20m/s. It takes the ball 7.9 seconds to hit the
ground below. What is the height of the cliff?
-A car weighs 2000kg and is accelerated at a rate of .85m/s sqaured. What is the net
force being applied to the object?
-Two perpendiculat forces, one of 60 N directed upward, and one of 100 N directed
to the right. What is the acceleration of the object?
-Which one of Newton’s laws says that an object resists change in motion?
-Which one of Newton’s laws says that for every action there is an opposite
reaction?
-A person pulls a box that weighs 210 N across a level surface with a constant
velocity. The rope makes an angle of 30 degrees and the tension on the rope is 110
N. What is the normal force of the floor on the box?
