Assignment #5-IFE Matrix
An Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE) Matrix is a strategy formulation tool that summarizes
and evaluates the major strengths and weaknesses in the functional areas of a business,
organization, school, etc. It also provides a general basis for identifying and evaluating
relationships among those areas. The IFE EFE and CPM matrixes all are similar in the format
and instructions on how to create a matrix. The steps that are used involve five steps which
include:
1) The key internal factor such as strengths and weaknesses listing them first with
strengths then weaknesses.
2) Assign a weight that ranges from 0.0 to 1.0 for each factor. This represents the degree
of importance for the factor to be successful to the firm. The sum of all weights
should be equal to zero. Ratings in this step are industry-based.
3) Assign a 1-4 rating for each factor to indicate whether the factor represents a major
weakness (Rating=1), a minor weakness (rating=2), a minor strength (rating=3), or a
major strength (rating=4). Ratings in step 3 are company based.
4) Multiply each factor’s weight by its rating to determine a weighted score for each
variable.
5) Sum the weighted scores for each variable to determine the total weighted score for
the organization.
The total weighted score can range from a 1.0 to a 4.0 and the average score being a 2.5.
