WORLD LANGUAGE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

SEVENTH THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE
Exploratory
The world language exploratory course is designed to expose students to listening, reading, writing, and speaking of French, German,
and Spanish on a rudimentary level. In addition, this course includes exposure to geography and culture of countries where the target
languages are spoken.
Level I
Level I of world language is an introduction to French, German, or Spanish. The course is designed to develop fundamental
proficiency in the areas of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students will acquire a basic command of pronunciation, spelling,
structure, grammar, and vocabulary and will begin to use the language in authentic communicative contexts. Students also gain a
better understanding of people, cultures, and countries of the target language. Students participate in a variety of activities such as
conversation, questions/answers, dialogues, reading, and storytelling.
Level II
Level II of world language is a continuation of the level one study of French, German, or Spanish. The course is designed to further
develop fundamental proficiency in the areas of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students will strengthen their basic
command of pronunciation, spelling, structure, grammar, and vocabulary and continue to use the language in authentic communicative
contexts. Students also gain a better understanding of people, cultures, and countries of the target language. Students improve their
conversational and comprehension skills through activities such as questions/answers, dialogues, reading, and storytelling.
Level III
Level III students further advance their study of French, German, or Spanish. The course is designed to increase proficiency in the
areas of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students will strengthen their command of pronunciation, spelling, structure,
grammar, and vocabulary and increasingly apply their skills within authentic linguistic contexts. Students also gain a better
understanding of the people, cultures, and countries of the target language. Students expand their conversational and comprehension
skills through a variety of activities such as questioning techniques, dialogues, reading, and storytelling. In addition, students’
command of the language will be enhanced through formal and informal writing.

Honors
Honors is designed for the student who is committed to the study of French, German, or Spanish. Students increase proficiency in
four major skill areas through extensive practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will refine their command of
pronunciation, spelling, structure, grammar, and vocabulary within more authentic linguistic contexts. Greater emphasis is placed on
literature, music, art, and cinema to enhance students’ linguistic and cultural understanding of different communities around the world.
Advanced Placement
Advanced Placement is designed for the student who is committed to the study of French or Spanish. The course is designed to
further advance proficiency in the areas of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students expand their ability to communicate in a
variety of temporal and situational contexts. In addition, students will be able to elaborate in conversation and writing and further
negotiate meaning. Students increase their cultural and linguistic knowledge through exposure to literature, music, art, and cinema.
