their annual ‘Trainer Game’ and were awarded

RESEARCH
Good news that Jon Wilson was awarded his
Doctorate just before the summer vacation. Jon is
increasingly in demand as an expert on
faith-based marketing, and has been
appointed editor of the Journal of
Islamic Marketing.
He has been invited to chair events in
Croatia, Dubai, Iran, Malaysia, Serbia and
Singapore and been interviewed on Malaysian and
Indonesian TV. He also won the Emerald Publishing
Group Literati Network Best Paper Award for his
paper “The Challenges of Islamic Branding”.
In the last year alone, Jon has had published or
accepted eight journal papers including one coauthored with the well-known Danish marketing
academic Svend Hollensen.
Meanwhile, the Olympics provided a
unique opportunity for Peter Vlachos
Director of the London Centre for Event
Management to assess the impact of the
event on London businesses. The research
suggested that as few as one in five small
businesses experienced a positive outcome from
the Olympic Games whilst some larger companies
fared rather better. Visitors generally were so
impressed they were likely to visit London again.
Peter also spoke at two conferences – the JANET
Arts and Humanities Video Streaming Workshop at
the Royal College of Music, and the ESRC Seminar
Series on 'Youth Precarious Employment: State
and Policy Responses'.
Dr Kate Armstrong will be presenting
the findings of her HEA funded
research, MA Dissertation Supervision
Best Practice Study at a workshop on
17 October.
Elizabeth Booth, Senior Lecturer in Tourism
Management, featured daily on the Guardian
Online throughout the Olympics as part
of the Guardian Olympic Experts
Network project. Her blog follows
Russian gymnasts through the circuit
of competition, trials … and
tribulations and can be found at
www.rewritingrussiangymnastics.blogspot.com
Dr Katia Iankova, also a Senior Lecturer in Tourism
Management, is currently undertaking research
supported by the Higher Education and Innovation
fund (HEIF) in collaboration with IainCarruthers-Jones of the University’s
Centre for Innovation, Imagination
and Inspiration. The project is
entitled "An Investigation of the
success factors and the challenges facing newly
established businesses in low income London
boroughs.”
October 2012
Dr Catherine Kelly and her PhD student
Corinna Chin attended the Royal
Geographical Society conference in
Edinburgh, where Corinna's research on
the cultural and heritage aspects of
'Visiting Friends and Relatives' tourism
received excellent feedback. Catherine herself has
just had a paper accepted for the Journal of
Tourism and Recreation Research entitled
'Wellness Tourism: Retreat Visitor Motivations and
Experiences'.
EVENTS
Wayne Hemingway co-founder of the Red or Dead
label and also chair of both the South Coast Design
Forum, and Building For Life addressed a one day
conference on 19 Sept. The event, Crossovers, was
supported by the Arts Council and
led by James Kennell, Director of
the
University’s
Economic
Development Resource Centre. The
event brought together people
working in tourism, culture and
economic development to explore new ways of
collaborating and exploring how to turn ideas into
new businesses and get financial backing.
A workshop on Narrative in PR was held for the
Masters and third year undergraduate PR students
on 21 October at the Laban Dance studios in
Deptford. The students were joined by academics
from Greenwich, the University of Sussex and from
PR practitioners from Apco International, FTI
Consulting
and
the
Department
of
Communities. This is the second year that the
workshop has been held and it is attracting
growing industry interest.
Students from both undergraduate and
postgraduate marketing programmes got a unique
opportunity to advise Microsoft on the
