Good Friends, Great Futures
For almost 30 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve has served at-risk
youth, helping them to develop the skills and abilities to become caring, responsible
and productive citizens. As part of a national movement focused on World-Class Youth
Development, we are committed to measuring how much our kids are achieving and
how effectively our Club Experience ensures their path to a great future. Boys & Girls
Clubs of America launched the National Youth Outcomes Initiative (NYOI) to measure
the impact of Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the country in a consistent way. We are
squarely at the table of this new initiative and are excited about using it as a tool to
better demonstrate locally our impact on the youth of our community.
Helping young people develop a moral compass and the strong character to make
positive life choices, as well as empowering youth with opportunities to make a positive
change in their communities, have long been bedrock principles of Boys & Girls Clubs.
There’s an old saying: If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. In
the Boys & Girls Clubs Movement we believe that every citizen, every organization and
every business has a role to play to solve the challenges facing our youth. Regardless
of the product or the service, the bottom line of success is always ROI or return on
investment. We believe that you would be hard pressed to find a stronger investment in
our nation’s future and sustainability than Boys & Girls Clubs. Of course, at the center of
the strategy is a fun Clubhouse experience for our kids.
With a continued collaborative commitment from the community, business leaders,
donors and partners like the Akron Public Schools, Summit Education Initiative, City
of Akron, Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority and many more, we believe we can
change the future for America’s kids.
Great Futures Start Here – at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve.

WITH A VERY LONG NAME
Following a tragic death in the family, Breanna, age 6, was
struggling in school. Now, through her participation at Boys &
Girls Clubs, she has become more outgoing and is a leader in
her first grade class— reading above grade level and excelling at
math. She enjoys reading to the class, loves art, and really likes
to bowl. Her favorite thing about Clubs? “I got a lot of Super
Star Letters!”
Breanna
Before coming to the Eller Club, 14 year old Antonio says he and
his brother “were hanging out with the wrong crowd.” Since
he began participating, he has developed into an impressive
leader. He was voted Captain of his basketball team, where he
encourages team members to maintain academics and stay out
of trouble and stands in for the coach at practice when needed.
He is also a leader during health and wellness activities at the
Club. His favorite program at the Club is Money Matters,
where he has learned about budgeting and managing money.“I
used to just blow my money, but now I’ve started saving it.”
Antonio
Antonio recently went through a very competitive selection process and was hired as a
Junior Staff member at the Clubs. He was also elected by his peers to Sergeant at Arms
in the Keystone Club.
Antonio really appreciates knowing that he can turn to Club staff when he has a
problem. “Ms. Tiffany helps me figure out things, she gives me good advice, and
is always available to talk.” When asked why he thinks Club is important, Antonio
stressed: “It changes lives. It keeps kids out of the streets. Some kids are in gangs and
carry guns. Maybe that wouldn’t happen if they came to Club.”
Originally from Puerto Rico, Xiomara, age 16, escaped an abusive
past and has emerged as a resilient and talented young lady.
She has consistently made the Honor Roll and served on Student
Council in both middle and high
school. Used to getting all A’s in

is that the Diplomas to Degrees program has
made her think about and plan for her future.“It has
made me more responsible. The staff has helped me look for scholarships and jobs. I’ve
learned how to write a resume.” After a rigorous hiring process, Xiomara was selected
to be a Junior Staff member at the Clubs. In addition, she has really enjoyed college
trips and community service projects.

Story:
Raised in a single
parent home with two
siblings, Tony Banks
says the Boys & Girls
Clubs provided him
with the structure he
needed. “My mother
was going back to

school to better support
us and the alternative would have been
running around loose.” Banks appreciated
the wide breadth of programs that were
offered and that the Clubs taught him
discipline. “You did things like reading to earn
the opportunity to participate in fun things
like dodgeball and basketball.”
Banks fondly remembers a staff member
at McKeesport Boys Club he knew as
“Cabbage” encouraging him to have fun
and achieve in sports, reading, and art.
“Cabbage entered me

When asked why he believes others should
support the work of Boys & Girls Clubs, Banks
emphasized that, “It gives opportunities to
kids that they would not have otherwise.
Especially in inner cities, I think it provides
structure to kids and gives them something
to look forward to. As a Club member, you
learn the discipline to interact socially with
others and why that is valuable. Club teaches
you how to network which is important
in life.”
Tony C. Banks is the founder and current
President & CEO of Star Energy Partners, LLC,
a retail provider of electricity, natural gas, and
energy related products and services. Prior to
August 2012, Mr. Banks was Vice President
of Competitive Market Policies of FirstEnergy
Solutions Corp., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy
Corporation, a public utility.

A commitment to collaboration.
This lesson is also one we have learned
through collaborations with our partners.
From simple collaborations to complex
community-wide systems, partnership
enables organizations to make the most
of each other’s strengths and thereby
better serve their constituencies. Working
together to achieve collective impact
allows organizations to more deeply
engage their communities; gain access to
greater expertise, credibility and funding;
and increase sustainability through
collaboration. We value our partners and
thank them for helping us to achieve the
maximum positive impact on the youth
of Greater Akron and the future we all
will share.
Kids at our LeBron James Club worked
in collaboration on a mural based on the
work of Reggie Laurent. As each child
added their own artwork, designed to
fit in the outlines their teacher created,
they found that the combined diversity
of colors, shapes, and textures made
for a more vibrant experience than the
individual pieces they each created alone.
The lesson they learned in this process is
reminiscent of one taught by Aristotle:
“The whole is more than the sum of
its parts.”
