Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (ISESCO), Higher Education
Commission (HEC), Pakistan and the Ministry of
Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan
recently organized a two-day Vice Chancellors'
Forum on “Higher Education in the Islamic
World: Challenges and Opportunities”.
The Forum was attended by Vice Chancellors,
Rectors, Presidents of universities and higher
education institutions of the OIC member states.
The Forum provided a platform to the university
leaders from the Islamic world for fostering
collaboration, strengthening cooperation and
encouraging dialogue among them and the
institutions they represented.
Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, the then Prime
Minister, was the chief guest in the inaugural
session. Speaking on the occasion, he said it is
imperative that maximum efforts should be
made to improve the higher education as
prosperous future of a nation is directly linked to
meaningful investments in science and
technology-led higher education.
The specific objectives of the Forum included
establishment of linkages and promoting
networking among the participating
universities/institutions; pooling resources
including, but not limited to, offering scholarship
for higher studies; promoting exchange of
students and faculty among the participating
universities/institutions; and establishing virtual
centres of excellence. The participants dilated on
issues like Governance, Knowledge
Management, Quality Assurance, and Science,

education in spite of numerous other competing
demands and the universities must prepare their
students appropriately and equip them with the
most relevant skill-sets, suitable for the modern
market place,” he added.
The Prime Minister said he eagerly looked
forward to the proceedings of the conference,
which will result into sound, specific and
practical recommendations. "I am confident that
the practical proposals will further strengthen
our respective higher education systems in
general and research and development in science
and technology in particular."
Highlighting the results of science and
technology from the West, the Prime Minister
said, "We would find that almost all the modern
comforts, the modern technologies, the modern
goods and gadgets, the modern cures for
diseases, the modern contributions to a variety of
knowledge have all mainly come from the
Western world. We, the Muslims on the other
hand, are only the users and consumers of the
fruits of hard work of others," he added.
world in the recent decades. “It is being
influenced by factors ranging from culture,
economics, politics to technology. The university
as an institution is usually entrenched quite deep
in the society. Its vision, mission, autonomy, the
quality of stakeholders' participation, availability
and use of human and financial resources,
priority in teaching and research, emphasis on
entrepreneurship and commercialization, and so
forth raises expectations for its intended role as
well as place it under the vigil of public scrutiny.”
In his welcome address, Mir Changez Khan
Jamali, Federal Minister for Science and
Technology, said the Government is making
sincere efforts to improve the higher education
sector. He said Muslims had played important
role in higher education in the past and
contributed to a number of inventions. The
Minister said the Government will fully
cooperate with universities and other
educational institutions to promote the facilities
for the higher education.
He said that knowledge creation, dissemination
and its diffusion is central in promoting
knowledge-based socio-economic growth.
“Effective knowledge management is an
increasingly important source of gaining
competitive advantage.”
Dr. Javaid R. Laghari, Chairperson HEC, said that
despite limited resources, the Higher Education

University Advancement under USAID-funded Merit and Needs Based Programme
IBA Karachi's Journey: A Step by Step Overlook
Institute of Business Administration (IBA),
Karachi has raised Rs. 3.302 billion till June 20,
2012 against its projected fundraising target of
Rs. 4.685 billion from 2009-14, achieved under the
visionary leadership of Dr. Ishrat Husain since
2008.
vision. One such person is Mr. Zafar Siddiqui,
who was hired as Director, Alumni Affairs and
Resource Mobilization. He was handed over a key
area which involved establishing and maintaining
linkages with 9000 IBA Alumni who are working
and living all over the world.
Due to guidance and management of Dr. Husain,
IBA has acquired a vision, which is “To be ranked
amongst Top 100 Global Business Schools in the
next five years (2009-2014).”
Mr. Siddiqui took a number of important steps in
his new role to ensure that IBA's relations with its
Alumni are fruitful and are aligned to its vision of
being in the top 100 Global business schools.
To realize its vision, IBA needs to have the AACSB
Accreditation (The American Quality
Accreditation) which is based on sequential
accreditation by EQUIS Accreditation (The
European Quality Accreditation) and SAQS
Accreditation (South Asian Quality
Accreditation). As a result of the hard work of the
entire IBA team under the leadership of Dr.
Husain, the Institute has already managed to
achieve SAQS Accreditation making it the 8th
Business School from South Asia having obtained
this milestone.
Dr. Husain and Mr. Siddique realized that if IBA
wanted to create a place for itself in the uncertain
and fiercely competitive future ahead, it had to
foster a partnership with its Alumni in order to
engage their support (both financial and other).
Therefore, the Alumni Department began its
capital raising campaign by streamlining existing
processes, revisiting old practices and
introducing innovative ones. He along with Ms.
Sabrina Faisal, Alumni Manager, had the
following tasks to achieve:
Reaching out to IBA Alumni
Creating a governing structure for an effective
alumni association
Creating Alumni Chapters in different parts of
the world
Organizing forums of key HR Managers
regularly to highlight IBA's role in providing
valuable resources to companies
Organizing Alumni get-togethers, reunions
and other events
Dispatching Alumni e-Newsletter in every
quarter
Keeping up a correspondence with the Alumni
Mobilizing Alumni support, both monetary
and otherwise
However, in order to attain American quality
accreditation, IBA has a long way to go as it
requires heavy investments in state-of-the-art
infrastructural facilities, IT infrastructure, faculty
development and curriculum redesigning. There
was a realization that financing of higher
education is not the exclusive responsibility of the
State, but the burden should be shared among the
parents, alumni, private sector employers,
philanthropic institutions, individuals,
communities and external donors.
In order to achieve the desired goals, Dr. Ishrat
Husain took some concrete steps to stimulate the
process because at that stage the Alumni
department was virtually non-existent and even
the University Advancement Office was inactive.
He hired competent and far-sighted people from
the market and made them partners in IBA's

financial aid and fund raising. IBA developed an
ambitious five-year plan (2009-14) with the
fundraising target of Rs. 4.7 billion. It focused
primarily on Scholarships, Career Development,

created. A number of Alumni Chapters have been
created in other parts of the world including UK,
Canada, Dubai apart from Lahore and Islamabad.
Another Chapter in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
will be launched shortly. The department
launched an Alumni e-Newsletter which is now
being issued every quarter.
The Alumni Centre is being created at the main
campus which would incur an estimated cost of
around Rs. 2 million. IBA has decided that this
Centre will be completely sponsored by the
Alumni. The Institute is investing heavily in
physical infrastructure development, at both
campuses, and funds raised have now reached
Rs. 2,890 million.
The Alumni database has been revamped. Alumni
department involved IBA's students/interns to
get in touch with Alumni with whom it had lost
contact through social networking, emails and
phone calls etc. In order to engage the Alumni

KIU Research Projects for Central
Karakuram National Park
For the management of the Central Karakuram National Park CKNP, funds were allocated for research.
KIU faculty submitted research proposals and they were evaluated by SEED scientific committee.
Researchers have started research in 13 projects. The outcome of these projects in various fields will
strengthen management of the Park. Activities of two projects are as under:

Medicinal Use of Barberry Fruit
Barberry is a common shrub that grows as wild plant in CKNP region. It is
found in plains, foothills and alpine regions of CKNP. Local communities
uproot this plant and use its roots for medicinal purposes (relieving pains,
curing ulcers and combating microbial diseases). By uprooting barberry
plants local people disrupt the natural ecosystem. Plant roots hold soil
together and in their absence top soil is washed away by rains. Mountain
ecosystem is fragile in nature and these disruptions have very serious
consequences.
KIU researchers have collected samples of barberry fruit from CKNP
region. These samples will be analyzed and compared with root samples. If
the constituents of barberry roots and fruits are similar (and most probably
they are), then an awareness campaign will be launched to inform local communities not to uproot
barberry plants. They would be encouraged to use fruits instead of roots to derive medical benefits.

Safe Mining Programme
The purpose of the project is to educate miners and workers and local communities about friendly and
health dangerous gemstones, minerals and rocks and application of innovative technologies to control
wastage of valuable gemstones and life safety during mining at high altitude of natural hazard prone
zones of the world.
According to present mining system, miners take inadequate measures of security and controlling of
wastage of gemstones. Therefore, KIU under SEED project initiated Safe Mining Programme to educate
miners with application of modern technologies during exploration and exploitation of gemstones in
CKNP.
The mining, an artery of socio-economic sector of CKNP, demands implementation of innovative
technologies to minimize losses during extracting minerals and rocks and processing for value added
product. The intensive magmatic activity during subduction process since Jurassic period forced
sedimentary deposits , Island arc and reaming fragments of crust and mantle to go through metamorphic
process and magmatic crystallization under favourable conditions for crystallization of gemstones ,
minerals, metallic and non-metallic minerals and economic valuable rocks in CKNP. The important
gemstones Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Aquamarine, Tourmaline, Garnet, Fluorite, Parodist, Spinal,

A systematic training programme of application
of modern technology was initiated by KIU in
collaboration with Ev-K2-CNR to train miners of
Nagar and Haramosh area to use modern
technology in mining of gemstones and safety
measures during work at high altitude and steep
slopes.
KIU and Ev-K2-CNR team consisting of
Mr. Ashraf Hussian from KIU and Mr. Marco
Barsanti and Mr. Maurizio Gallo from E-K2-CNR
arranged training programme of miners from
Nagar and Haramosh area of CKNP. Lectures
were arranged in Seed office to demonstrate
instruments of safety mining and explain
importance of safety measures during
exploration and exploitation of gemstones.
Moreover, a field trip was also arranged to
demonstrate equipment of safety mining and
safety measures of mining on steep slopes.
KIU Holds Workshops for GB Farmers
Several training workshops were conducted by
the Agriculture and Food Technology
Department, Karakuram International
University (KIU), Gilgit in the Central
Karakuram National Park (CKNP) region.
Farmers were trained in areas like fruit
harvesting, fruit grading, packing, marketing
and fruit processing.
apples according to size. Bigger apples, medium
sized and smaller apples going into separate
boxes, before sending them to market. This
would give farmers better price.
Proper marketing and labeling is essential for
inter-state transportation/marketing and export
of fruit. Farmers were encouraged to organize
proper packing and marketing of fruits on their
own. Taking out middle man can get farmers
better returns.
Farmers in Gilgit-Baltistan still use traditional
farming methods, when it comes to fruit
harvesting. They shake apricot tree vigorously,
all the ripe and unripe fruit comes down to
ground. This causes injury to ripe fruit which
becomes unmarketable.
Each year a substantial amount of fruit goes
waste in Gilgit-Baltistan. For example, 60 per cent
mulberry, 40 per cent apple and 20 per cent cherry
goes waste. Farmers were trained to process
surplus fruit and go for value-added products
like James and juices to earn more for their efforts.
Farmers were encouraged to use solar drying to
dry apricots.
Farmers were advised to use bamboo stick with
hook to gently shake branches and hold a plastics
or cloth sheet underneath to avoid fruit injury.
Farmers were advised not to lump all apples in
one basket. Instead they were asked to grade
