This course emphasizes the role of ethical decision-making in functional areas of work and business practice.

What challenges do individuals face on the job – as employees and decision-makers? Focus in this course: challenging case studies and workplace topics involving real ethical issues and problem-solving. During the course, a variety of components – speakers, film clips, internet and hands-on exercises will help illustrate ethical decision-making examples. We will have active class and iLearn dialogues requiring your :

• Participation: 25% ( 150 pts )

" Focus: Self-motivated class participation demonstrating comprehension of the assigned readings and full engagement in class discussions & group exercises

Due: Attendance and Participation contributions are noted for each class!

Grading: 10 pts each attended class (points reduced for arriving late/leaving early/nonparticipation*)

• iLearn Forums: 25% ( 150 pts )

" Focus: Weekly iLearn Forums for your analytical responses to posted questions demonstrating your comprehension of the assigned chapters / readings and providing meaningful responses to one another – individually written in your own words (NO copied wording or quotes) with references cited. (Further

Guidelines are posted on iLearn.)

Due: PRIOR to start of each class. [NO make-ups, late, hardcopy or emailed submissions!]

Grading: 0 - 10 pts each complete iLearn Forum (points reduced for incomplete/incorrect discussions)

• Quizzes: 25% ( 150 pts )

" Focus: Five 30 minute, timed iLearn short answer quizzes throughout the semester based on chapter readings, case studies and class discussions!

Due: Assigned for 30 minute completion within a posted 24 hour period on iLearn.

Grading: 30 pts each quiz [0 for missed Quiz - NO make-ups]

• Business Case Study: 25% ( 150 pts )

" Focus: Partnership (two person) 10 minute (5-slides) Power Point class presentation; untimed Q&A.

Due: Partners select case study on iLearn and present on stated calendar dates [NO make-ups]

Grading: each student earns own points [0 for failure to do your own analysis / missed presentation]

C OURSE G RADING :

• Total course points goal = 600 pts - converted to letter grades at end of semester, including pluses and minuses

(see grade scale posted on iLearn). I do not round up points or curve grades. Keep in mind : At least two hours of study is expected in preparation for each hour of class (see SFSU Grading Policy and Systems ).

• Extra Credit points: Volunteer at a local nonprofit organization / event for minimum of 2 hours, submit documentation and tell the class about your experience (10 pts). Specific campus Business Speaker events (5 pts

• each speaker event/max 10 pts credit) may be eligible for extra credit – see iLearn for more information.

Academic Standards : Academic Dishonesty applies to all Forums, Quizzes and Case Study presentations : cheating (copying, sharing information, submitting parallel work, or looking at/using another current or past student’s work) ; plagiarism (copying any wording from any source, the text or other books, or internet websites; deception

(providing false information). I check internet and online sources.

Academic dishonesty by any student will result in

0 points grading on that Forum, Quiz or Case Study, a meeting with me to discuss the issue during my office hours, and may result in an F (failing grade) in the course .

Attendance and level of Participation are noted every class meeting .

Absences: are not be excused, except in extreme situations (i.e., funeral for immediate family member, your hospitalization, serious illness or surgery, jury duty, major religious observance) with advance email notice to me. Plus, written documentation is required (obituary notice/funeral notice, medical documentation, jury or court summons, etc.) for any excused absence and it must be emailed or submitted at the next class meeting; otherwise, the absence is not excused and your attendance/participation points for that class will be 0 pts. Work schedules do not count as an excused absence. Other classes’ project deadlines or faculty meetings, sick hamsters, bad hair days, usual life stuff, etc. don’t qualify! If in doubt about a needed absence, talk to me or drop me an advance email.

Participation: is based on the level of your active participation in overall class discussions and group / partnership exercises throughout each class meeting (see iLearn for guidance on earning points).

*Nonparticipation = using or looking at your cell phone, electronic device or laptop (see below), leaving class early, leaving class frequently or for an extended period of time, eating during class, chatting with another student when someone else is speaking, reading/studying/working on another classes’ homework or notes, sleeping, etc. Disruption of the academic process - such as cell phone use, or inappropriate talking, or persistent or disrespectful interruptions of class discussions - will be treated per the SFSU

Student Conduct policy guidelines.

• NO laptop, tablet, cell phone, or iPod use during class. NO audio, photographic, video, electronic, or technological taping/monitoring of any class discussions permitted.
