between hope and disillusionment. In Africa to shoot a documentary on the devastation wreaked by AIDS,
Valcourt watches on as tensions rapidly escalate between Tutsis and Hutus. At the Hotel Des Mille

Though she feels the same way, their romance grows in fits and starts; she is so young and he - he is so
white.. In spite of their differences, Gentille and Valcourt throw caution to the wind and marry. And then
war breaks out. Amidst the ensuing chaos the lovers are brutally separated. Valcourt searchesdesperately
for his wife, but because of his staus as a foreigner, is forced to leave the country. Months later, Rwanda
is stained with the blood of close to a million Tutsis but order has been restored. Valcourt returns to Kigali
in search of his wife. But with many survivors displaced from their homes and some living in refugee

does, will they recapture their love or will the scars of Africa's most brutal war run too deep? A beautiful
love story set against the horror of genocide, a Sunday in Kigali paints, with clarity and compassion, a

Did you know only half of the over 20 million Africans kidnapped into slavery survived the torturous trip to
the New World? That slaves were promised freedom to fight for Britain in the Revolutionary War? That
many Europeans came to America as bonded labor? That a country founded on freedom justified the
enslavement of human beings? Africans in America: America's Journey Through Slavery is the
groundbreaking four-part series that makes history by sharing it from a new perspective.
Nearly ten years in the making, this landmark six-our film series exposes the truth through surprising
revelations, dramatic recreations, rare archival photography and riveting first-person accounts. Africans in
America helps define the reality of slavery's past through the insightful commentary of a wide range of
voices including General Colin Powel, authors John Edgar Wideman and Barry Unsworth, and leading
scholars. Narrated by Academy Award nominee Angela Bassett, it offers unparalleled understanding from slavery's birth in the early 1600s through the violent onset of civil war in 1860.

Arlit, Deuxieme Paris
Program: World Languages
Languages
Arlit, Deuxieme Paris is a case study in migration and environmental racism set in an uranium mining town
in the Sahara desert of Niger. Here European corporations extracted nuclear power and profits, leaving
behind illness due to radiation, contamination and unemployment.
Arlit flourished during the oil crunchof the early 70's when its uranium mines employed 25,000 workers
from around the world in high paying jobs. It had frequent international flights, eletricity, and nightlife,
earning it the nickname, "le deuxieme Paris" (the second Paris) Then came the collapse in uranium prices
and the Tuareg rebellion against the central government in Niamey. The European companies abandoned
it, leaving behind the derelict machinery littering the desert that is so memorable an image in the film. Arlt
demonstrates the ultimate futility of overseas investment in a commodity-based industry as a strategy for
development.
French, Bariba, Hausa and Location: HO 311
What strikes one most about Arlit, howeer, is that it is a place of waiting. In sometimes humorous
moments, we realize that most people are there in the hope of going somewhere elese. Only the nomadic
Tuareg have found an occupation: smuggling desperate Africans on the dangerous journey across the
desert to Algeria. From there they hope to pursue the uncertain life of undocumented immigrants in
Europe.

Le malentendu colonial examins European colonialism in Africa through the prism of Christian evangelism.
The film scrutinizes in particular the role of German missionaries in the 1904 genocide of the Herero
people. It was during this genocide that Germany developed its first concentration camps. Le malentendu
colonial also examines the 1884 Berlin Conference, where the colonial powers divided Africa mongst
themselves.
The film reveals how colonialism destroyed African beliefs and social systems and replaced them with
European values as if such values were the only ones compatible with modernity. Although critical of the
relationship between the missionaries and the colonizers, the film also highlights the role of African
Christians in Namibia's struggle for independence and in greater African Renaissance.

From the highly acclaimed Brazilian Director Carlos Diegues (Bye Bye Brazil, Xica da Silva), featuring the
music of one of Brazil's most legendary musicians Caetano Veloso, comes a cinematic specticle capturing
the vibrant colors, seductive samba music and visually tantalizing ambiance of Brazil's Carnaval. Based on
the play that inspired Black Orpheus, Orfeu takes place in Carioca Hill, a dangerious slum in Rio de Janeiro.
Orfeu, a chrismatic and beloved samba musician, leads his school each year in the Carnaval parade,
refusing to abandon the slums where he was raised. When Orfeu falls in love with Euridice, an Indian girl
visiting her aunt in Carioca Hill, he arouses the jealously of his fiery mistress, forgotten lovers and
childhood friend Lucinho, now a brooding drug lord. Shifting from the unvarnished brutality of drug raids
and lynch mobs to the glittering spectacle of Carnaval, this romantic, dynamically beautiful film is full of life

back is turned, and then goes on a search throught rome to find it. That is about all there is to it. But it

And this is not because we see Rome as it is, or poor people, or rags. It is because these actual details are
organized by a humane view of life. The filme is unafraid to examine openly, straighforwardly, the terrible
distorted, destructive world which man has made for himself.
