TI3'ig Bob Adams, burly 6-foot, 200-pound Canoga Park fullback
~perfo~1ng in a manner reminiscent of another great L.A. City
power runnel' Hugh McElhenny, led his Canoga. Pa,1 k teammates to
the 1968 Los Angeles City Football Ch~\pionsh1p and by so doing
captured the hearts and the votes of the Helms Fo~mdat1o~ts City Board
of Football to be named UPlayer of the Year" in 1J08 Angales C1 ty feotball for the 1968 season.
Adams, in what must go down as one of the great ball carrying
exhibitions in city playoff history, scored five touchdowns as he
rocked and rolled over Poly for 24 8 yards ~ 32 cprries o The Hunters'
victory over Poly 34 2? gav'a Ctmoga Park its first ever grid championship and a quite respect!ble lO-l~l record for the year. Coach Mathieson's Hunters actually finished second to Cleveland in West-Valley
Loop play during the year (lost 33-14 in leaguG title decider), but
came back strong in the playoffs.
Canoga Park, with Adams and running mate Greg Done accounting
for most of the damage (these boys ran off with 2,800 yards during the
year between them), took care of Western League champion Westchester,
27-6; Marine Loop titlist and undefeated Gardana, 7-6; Southern League
co-champ and undefeated Manual Arts, 14-13; and finally Poly in the
playo.ff finale.
The selection of the 1968 All-Los Angeles City grid team saw
three units selected on both offense and defense for the first time
in board history. Last year, the city board changed its format to
include both offensive and defensive units ••• two teams for each••• but
with so much talent available to the selectors the board felt that
three units of both offense and defense would be advisable.
For the second year, Poly's Eric Shirley was named to the allstar squad as a kicker. Manfred Moore, on last year's first defensive
unit, was a first team offense pick from San Fernando. Dennis stewart
of Poly and Tom Griswold of Westchester, named to this season's first
defensive unit, were second team defense picks last year o

All league Players of the Year, along with the city's top
player selection Bob Admas, will be recipients of Helms medallion
awards from All-Los Angeles City Board of Football. All 73 players
named to· All-Los Angeles City offensive and defensive berths for 1968
will receive special scroll awards, beautirully framed in recognition
of their achievernnts during the past year. Awards will be presented
. to the boys at the 32 annual gridiron awards program, date to be announced.
An indication of the talent on this year's all-city team •••
largest ever selected by the Helms Board••• is reflected in the fact
that of the 73 players named for offensive and defensive honors, just
five players were juniors while all others were senior ball players.
All-Los Angeles City Football Teams are selected by members

Eastern Loop winner Roosevelt placed six players on the two allleague first teams, three on offense and three on defense, as members
of All-Los Angeles Board of Football met at Helms Hall last week to
make annual all-league selections. Jefferson, winding up loop action
with the same record as Roosevelt (3-1-1) also placed six performers.
CO-Players of the Year were named for 1968, as Roosevelt's fine end
Greg Hudson and Huntington Park's stellar halfback Greg Williams share
league accolades. Coach Vernoy at H.P. calls Williams an "outstanding
runner, good pass receiver and our team leader. u Coach McLean at
Roosevelt rates Hudson "the best pass catcher in the school! s history."
Bell and Huntington Park finished behind the league leaders in 3rd
and 4th place (2-2-1 & 2-3), while South Gate, last season's champs,
and Garfield finished 5th and 6th (1-2-2 & 1-3-1).
After getting over Van Nuys in the playoff first round, 19-7, the
Roughriders were shut out by Manual Arts 21-0. Jefrerson was knocked
off by Cleveland 7-6. All players named for all-league honors will be
recipients of Helms Foundation scroll awards as they have since the
program was instituted back in 1937.
