using your initial qualification to provide 110 of the 180 required
credits.
Human Resource Management and Human Resource
Development are key functions within organisations today. They
work together to promote good practice in the recruitment and
selection and development of staff throughout the employment
life cycle.
Human Resource Management (HRM) is seen as the
transformation of Personnel Management into a strategic,
value-adding function, focused on attracting and selecting the
best employees and managing their progression through the
employment life cycle.
The closely-related role of Human Resource Development (HRD)
provides learning and development for employees of all levels to
ensure that organisational knowledge is effectively recognised
and disseminated to support organisational development and
change and that future leadership and management succession
is assured.
The two areas of HRM and HRD work together in many integrated
ways but professionals often see their career being focused more
toward one or the other. As the pace of change in organisations
continues it is essential that all HR professionals become strategic
partners in organisations and are able to contribute to strategic
direction, taking a people-oriented viewpoint.
These two routes through the MA will encourage you to learn
more about organisational strategy and its relationship with HR
and to research an organisational issue from an HRM or HRD
perspective.
Course structure
The programme is run over a twelve month time span comprising
a taught part with areas of study and assessment linked to
student’s work and a dissertation which determines whether
students receive an MA in HRM or HRD.
In Semester One students take two modules; Human Resource
Strategy and Research Methods. The first of these is the focal
module of the course which examines and analyses Human
Resource Strategy from a number of perspectives: strategic
management, employee commitment, quality and flexibility.
The second module provides the support to students in
completing the planning and research necessary for their
dissertation.
Semester Two is devoted to the dissertation. Each student will
choose a topic appropriate to their pathway and will research
it and present their findings in a thesis format. A tutor will be
allocated to provide advice.
Assessment
Human Resource Strategy which includes strong links to Business
Strategy will be taught using a mixture of lectures, case studies,
videos, projects and student discussion.
It’s a state-of-the art facility and provides you with high quality
environment in which to learn and develop.
The approach will be to allow flexibility to link with areas of
student interest and build on previous academic study.
The building features modern, spacious classrooms with excellent
IT facilities and there are a number of computer labs for general
student access.
Assessment will be by assignments related to work. All work is
moderated by an external assessor.
Attendance
The taught part of the programme will be delivered in three
blocks of two days. Attendance for the dissertation consists of
about six meetings with a supervisor. This arrangement can be
very flexible and is designed for people with busy full time jobs.
