As the full extent of the Nepal Earthquake
becomes apparent, our thoughts are with the
people of Nepal and our humanitarian team on
the ground.
The days and weeks ahead are critical.
Oxfam are already there providing clean water,
sanitation and shelter to initially 350 000
people - but the need is immense.
Having taken part in Emergency Challenge
alongside the Humanitarian team, Oxfam
wanted to update you on the situation and ask for your help....
We are working in four open air sites in the Kathmandu Valley - delivering water and building toilets. Over
the coming days we will work with other agencies to provide clean water to 16 open air sites set up by the
Government of Nepal and to provide food and shelter, while also expanding operations outside Kathmandu.
Oxfam has so far raised more than half a million pounds from the UK public - a fantastic initial response but more is needed.
More than 3.5 million people are estimated to have been affected by the earthquake which hit on Saturday.
An Oxfam response team has been mobilised from India to assess the humanitarian situation in Gorkha, the
hardest hit district. Oxfam is also assessing what needs to be done to help people in Lalitpur, Lumjung
District and across the border in India in Sitamarhi and Darbanga.
Mark Goldring, Oxfam GB CEO says: “We are extremely grateful for timely generosity of the British public
but the scale of this crisis means that more is needed.”
Immediate dangers are our first priority, but in the long term there’s a lot to be done. Oxfam will be there to
help people rebuild their lives, but we need your support to do this.
Please help by donating to Oxfam’s emergency response in Nepal

Thank you for being part of the Emergency Challenge Midlands community, and if you did want to see what a day could be like for
emergency responders in humanitarian crisis, spaces for June 2015 are still available. www.oxfam.org.uk/challenge/nottingham

Twycross Zoo welcomes the return
of giraffes in brand new exhibit...
The Summer is a prime time for fun family days out and Twycross
Zoo has reported healthy visitor numbers across the school holidays
thanks to the pleasant warm weather, and the return of giraffes.
The zoo has erected a brand new purpose-built facility which is
now home to three male giraffes, Epesi, Setanta and Brad, who have
travelled across land and sea to their new enclosure. The giraffes
arrived in early April and have been settling in to their new
surroundings and meeting each other for the first time, forming a
bachelor group.
Dr. Charlotte Macdonald, Director of Life Sciences says, “We are
absolutely delighted to welcome giraffes back to Twycross Zoo. It is
very important that captive bred animals maintain healthy genetics,
and our three new males were
all in need of a new habitat as part of European breeding
programme recommendations because you cannot keep multiple
males with females.”
breezemagazine6
The giraffes are now residing in Twycross
Zoo’s Giraffe Savannah, a purpose-built
facility with a large house and communal
stable area and outdoor paddocks that
open on to a savannah grassland which
runs parallel with Elephant Creek. Giraffe
Savannah is the first brand new animal
enclosure to be built as part of the zoo’s
20 year masterplan vision which was
announced in March 2015.
There are nine sub-species of giraffe,
of which, Twycross Zoo now has two
types. Epesi is a reticulated giraffe,
currently six years old who transferred to
Twycross Zoo from Colchester Zoo. Reticulated giraffes are native to
Somalia and parts of Ethiopia and Kenya. Visitors will be able to tell
Epesi apart from the other two males by his distinctive coat which
has liver spots outlined by clearly defined white lines.
Setanta and Brad, are both Baringo giraffes, a name derived from
Lake Baringo in Kenya, but they are often more commonly known as
Rothschild giraffes. This sub-species of giraffe is native to Kenya and
Uganda. The coat of a Baringo giraffe is a different shade from
reticulated giraffes, and the markings stop at their knees to give the
appearance of wearing long white stockings. They are also the only
sub species of giraffe to have five ossicones – the term given to the
horn-like structures on their heads. Setanta is currently 4 years old
and travelled to Twycross Zoo from Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland,
while Brad, the smallest of the three, is two years old and came from
Flamingo Land in Yorkshire.
Dr Macdonald continues, “The giraffes have been incredibly calm
throughout their journeys to Twycross Zoo, and we are slowly
introducing them to each other so that they will soon live
harmoniously as a bachelor group. They have responded very well
to their new surroundings and to our visitors who have been very
excited to see them during the Easter holidays, and we expect to see
them exploring the outside Savannah area very soon.”
Twycross Zoo is open to the public from 10.00 to 18.00. For
more information and to book tickets visit ww.twycrosszoo.org

THE HARDEST DECISION - CHOOSING WHICH ESTATE AGENT TO GO WITH...
To help, I’ve put
together eight must
have’ ingredients to
give your home the
very best opportunity
of selling fast for the
best price. Here goes...
1. You need a local agent with a
branch manager you can trust,
who is themselves a local (like
me!). They need to know the area
and can give expert local advice. It
also helps them strike up rapport
with your buyers.
2. You want somebody to give you the correct valuation and not inflate the
price and give you unrealistic expectations to trick you into signing up (and
locking you into a long contract...)
3. There should be one point of contact from beginning to end. So the
same person who values your house should also conduct the viewings and
always be on hand to give you feedback And that includes giving you their
mobile phone number so you can call for an update at any time
4. Accompanied viewings. The truth is that you more than
DOUBLE your
chances of a sale by having accompanied viewings. Go without and your
agent is shooting you in the foot.
5. Open 24/7 for telephone enquiries to book viewings or make offers.
People look for houses at the weekends or on evenings when
most agents are shut! Your agent needs to be available when
your buyers are ready and waiting to express their interest.
6. Allow buyers to book their own viewings and make offers
online 24/7. By making it easy for your potential buyers, you’re
more likely to get a sale quickly.
7. They must have exposure on all the major portals. So either
Rightmove or Zoopla alone won’t cut it. They need to list on
Primelocation as well to showcase your home to the maximum
audience.
8. Their boards must stand out. There are so many houses for
sale and agents boring boards all look the same. Boards are your
property’s shop window. They need to stand out so that
everybody notices them! More attention equals more viewers.
It’s a no brainer...
With all of these
techniques deployed,
you’ll be giving your
home the very best
chance of a fast sale
and achieving the best
possible price and that
includes giving you their
mobile phone number
so you can call for an
update at any time.
Good luck!

BEST FOOT FORWARD
What a joy to wake to blue skies and
sunny days, a bit of a mix now and
again it’s true but as in life, it’s a mixed
bag of surprises.
May is such a lovely month of
expectation, lazy summer days ahead,
time to prepare holiday
plans and to shake out those lovely
summery colours in our wardrobes.
However, that is never the end to
preparations. The best adornment for those gradually bronzing legs
and feet, men and ladies too, are those rather nice sandals that have
languished over winter just waiting for this time of year.
Start right now with a foot treatment and soon you will be happily
tiptoeing among the tulips!
Call Marion for all your foot care needs on 0115 939 3662

Take a tour of the Med
without leaving town!
The Mediterranean diet has long been associated with good health.
Now a local weight-loss expert says a new cook book inspired by the Med
will set you on the road to fabulous slimming.
Slimming World's Mediterranean Magic / Lara Holmes. Slimming World retains
Slimming World has published Mediterranean Magic, which is full of
copyright of this image.
Mediterranean-style dishes that have been created in line with the
organisation’s famous Food Optimising healthy eating plan. Local Slimming World Consultants say it will show people that it’s possible to
fill your plate with bold sunshine flavours and exciting colourful food while losing weight.
They say “Mealtimes in the Med are special times”. They’re about sitting down with the ones you love and enjoying the foods and
flavours you love. One of the best things about the warmer months is enjoying mouth-watering meals with family and friends, whether
that’s packing a picnic or coming together for a big barbecue feast. People might think that if they’re losing weight those events have to
be off the menu for them, yet that’s absolutely not the case at Slimming World.
“Slimming World’s plan isn’t about going ‘on a diet’, it’s about discovering a new way of eating that means you can still enjoy food and live
your life. In fact, by making small changes to the way they prepare and cook meals, slimmer’s find there’s very little they can’t have while
losing weight. The healthy versions of delicious dishes from holiday hotspots in this book show that perfectly and they’re ideal for the
upcoming summer months. Even if people aren’t going away this summer, Mediterranean Magic will take them, and their tastebuds, on a
tour of the Med and ensure that their weight-loss journey is a very tasty one.”
Mediterranean Magic features more than 100 recipes – including mains, starters and desserts – from countries bordering the
Mediterranean Sea like France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. Readers will find healthy versions of classics from their favourite destinations,
such as lasagne and paella, as well as discovering new dishes, including Spanakopita (a spinach and feta pie from Greece) and Harira
(a fragrant Moroccan soup).
Every recipe in Mediterranean Magic is based on Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan, which allows slimmers to satisfy their appetite
on every day foods like fruit and veg, meat, chicken, fish, pasta, rice and potatoes so there’s no need to go hungry while losing weight.
Herbs and spices can also be used freely on the plan, meaning it’s easy for anyone who’s losing weight to bring the big flavours of the
Med into their kitchen without compromising their slimming campaign.
The collection suits all cooking abilities and each recipe is accompanied by a photo of the finished article to tempt the tastebuds and
help inspire novice cooks.
Mediterranean Magic is available in all Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland, priced £9.99. For more delicious recipes

Start spreading the news –
New York, New York is coming to town!
Join BMTG for the thrilling, captivating, exhausting journeys of our cast
through New York’s history from the nineteenth century to the present
day, as their hopes, dreams and ambitions take them from all over the
world to the city so good, they named it twice. The sights and sounds of
New York have bewitched, mesmerized and dazzled generations, and are
brought to life in a riot of colour, music and movement that shows how
the city changes lives, makes (and loses) fortunes, and can make dreams
come true just as quickly as it seems to shatter them. Featuring songs from some of the most wonderful shows set in and
about The Big Apple, New York, New York takes us on a whirlwind tour of
the city that never sleeps, from the first sight of the Statue of Liberty to the
roar and spectacle of Times Square. On the way, we meet the rich and the
rundown, the great and the greedy, the dreamers and the schemers who
live, love and laugh in the city, from its subway tunnels to its roofs that
scrape the sky.
There is something for everyone in this concert. Featuring songs from
musicals such as- West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Funny Girl, Little Shop of
Horrors, Avenue Q, Company, Annie, Guys & Dolls, 42nd Street, Sweet
Charity, Copacabana and not forgetting some old Frank magic. All of these
shows are set in the Big Apple so let us bring New York to Long Eaton.
New York, New York – so good you’ll want to see it twice. On between
27th - 30th May.
Tickets are £10 (£9 concessions) and available online at

About BMTG
Beeston Operatic Society was founded in 1967 by Graham
Anderson, John Hackney, Paul Middleton and Ted Morris
who were all members of “other” societies but thought that
Beeston should have its own operatic society for the people
of Beeston who were supporting the neighbouring groups.
An inaugural meeting was called to assess interest and 90
people attended! Michael Wright, a local councillor and
business man, had experience in amateur operatics and
was invited to become Producer; Andrew Nicklin was
invited to become Musical Director - both accepted. The
decision was made to form ‘Beeston Operatic Society’ and
the first show produced was ’White Horse Inn’ which was
performed at Round Hill School.
BOS grew in number and popularity and eventually the
move was made to a real theatre - the Co-Op Arts Theatre
on George Street in Nottingham for performances; Round
Hill School remained our rehearsal venue. Every show was
performed at George Street until 2000 when the future of
the theatre was in doubt and so we moved to The Duchess
Theatre in Long Eaton. Sadly, our stay there was short as the
theatre burnt down two weeks after our production of
‘Kismet’. We returned to Round Hill School and performed
our shows there from 2004 - 2010, joyfully returning to The
Duchess for ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘The Full Monty’ in 2011.
Our return to The Duchess Theatre was a double
celebration as our production of ‘My Fair Lady’ was
nominated for and won the NODA award for Best Musical a very proud moment for everyone involved.
Another major change came when we renamed the
society in 2003. Having never produced an “opera”, it was
decided to update our name to give a more realistic idea of
what we actually did! BOS became BMTG - Beeston Musical
Theatre Group. Our first production as BMTG was ‘Kismet’!
We hope to continue to produce and perform for the
people of Beeston and Nottingham for many more years.

MENINGITIS FACTS
• Meningitis is usually caused by
bacteria or viruses
• Meningitis is inflammation of the
membranes that surround and
protect the brain and spinal cord
• Meningitis and septicaemia often
happen together – it is vital to know
all the signs and symptoms
• The early signs and symptoms of
meningitis and septicaemia can be
similar to ‘flu and include fever,
headache, nausea, vomiting and
muscle pain.
• The more specific signs and
symptoms include fever with cold
hands and feet, drowsiness,
confusion, pale blotchy skin, stiff
neck, dislike of bright lights and a
rash which doesn’t fade under
pressure.
• In babies, symptoms can also
include being floppy and
unresponsive, dislike of being
handled, rapid breathing, an
unusual, moaning cry and a bulging
fontanelle (soft spot on the top of
the head).
• There are an estimated 3,200 cases
of bacterial meningitis and
septicaemia each year in the UK.
• Following bacterial meningitis or
septicaemia, one in ten people will
die and at least a third of survivors
will be left with lifelong after-effects
such as hearing loss, epilepsy, limb
loss or learning difficulties
• Meningitis and septicaemia can
affect anyone, of any age, at any
time. However, babies and young
children are most at risk, and young
people between 15 – 24 years are
also a higher risk group.
• If you suspect someone may be ill
with meningitis or septicaemia,
trust your instincts and get
immediate medical help.

celebrated culture
Nottingham’s first Caribbean heritage
museum is due to open this October, to
coincide with national Black History Month.
The SKN (Skills, Knowledge and Networks)
Heritage Museum will be one of only a
handful of similar museums in the UK, so it’s
a real coup for the city. It promises to be
much more than a museum too, with plans
including a gallery, the chance to learn
traditional arts and crafts, a screening
room, a library, a play and learning area for
schools, children and young people, a gift
shop and indoor market showcasing up and
coming artists and start-ups and a
curiosities room.
The museum is the idea of Catherine Ross, a retired teacher from
Bakersfield, who came to Nottingham from St Kitts when she was
just seven years old. Catherine was inspired to start the museum
when she began researching the Caribbean contribution to
Nottingham and realised there was very little information, either in
libraries or online.
Catherine, an experienced worker in community development, the
voluntary youth sector, and heritage development explains:
“I’ve been looking into doing something to celebrate black heritage
and culture since 2000. The museum will be a community, social and
living history museum featuring the contributions of Caribbeans to
community development in Nottingham from the 1700’s to the
present day. Initially, many of our programmes and exhibitions will
focus on the period when most Caribbean people came to the UK in
the 1950’s and how this ‘Windrush Generation’ adapted to life here
and the differences they experienced between the Caribbean and
UK.
breezemagazine 24
Our strapline is ‘celebrating
and commemorating the
contributions of Caribbeans
to the culture of Nottingham’
and that sums up what we’re
all about. Our aim is to be a
place for all and a space to
inform and inspire every
generation. As well as
bringing history to life and
sharing Caribbean stories,
we’ll also be a community
space and a venue
showcasing new artists and
musicians for example.
It’s not just about times gone
by, it’s about how the
contribution of past
generations have helped to shape our vibrant and creative city
today. It’s about what’s happening now.”
The museum’s venue is yet to be confirmed, but it’s likely to be part
of Nottingham’s new Heritage Quarter, in the City Centre or in the
Creative Quarter that is currently taking shape around the Hockley
area. As a social enterprise community interest company, the SKN
Heritage Museum is a not for profit organisation. To raise funds for
its opening, as well as awareness and interest in the project, the
museum has already held a couple of fundraising events and has
more planned.
Catherine’s daughter, Lynda Burrell, the museum’s Creative Director
says:
“While we’re waiting to move into our permanent home, we’ll be
visiting schools and communities around the East Midlands to tell
them about the museum and how they can get involved. We’re also
looking for volunteers, exhibits for the museum’s collections such as
letters, photographs or objects of interest and people willing to
share their stories and oral histories, as well as donations and
sponsorship.”

The Royal British

TMB Art Metal

unique set of
poppy shaped
cufflinks, and a
lapel pin, made
from spitfire
“P7350” metal.
Funds raised from
the sale of the cufflinks will go to help
remember the sacrifice of the fallen and
support the future of the living…
This year marks the 70th
anniversary of
Victory in
Europe Day
and the 75th
anniversary of
the Battle of Britain, and The Royal British Legion is playing a leading role
in ensuring the memories of those who fought and died in the Second
World War live on.
The Battle of Britain was one of the turning points in that war and the
brave air crews involved, of whom nearly 1500 died, undoubtedly helped
prevent Germany from invading Britain. Only 35 Spitfires remain in use around the world today. Of these, the
Spitfire P7350, having survived the Battle of Britain complete with battle
scars and bullet holes is now the oldest and most historically significant
airworthy plane of its type in existence. Recent restoration work on the
P7350 and the removal of the original metal, duralumin, has allowed TMB
Art to obtain and create these truly unique cufflinks and lapel pins.
Cast in the shape of a poppy, the design of the products is based on a
pressed poppy found in the World War One diary of Private
Smith and each pin and set of cufflinks is different, thanks to the
age and character of the metal used.
All products are supplied in high quality wooden cases
complete with illustrated certificates of provenance and will be a
talking point around any meeting table or black tie event.
The cufflinks and pins are available exclusively from The Royal
British Legion’s Poppy Shop, www.poppyshop.org.uk, the
cufflinks for £99.99 and the lapel pin for
£49.99, where all proceeds from their
sale go directly to the charity and the
important work they do in providing
care and support to all members of the
British Armed Forces and their families.
The Royal British Legion is committed
to keeping alive the memory of the
fallen, and supporting the future
of the living.

award winning band
Carlton Brass Band are Nottingham’s leading brass band, dedicated to training and developing
both young and older inexperienced players through their training band.
Why not ask them to perform at your event or occasion...
Carlton Brass took First Place in the North East Midlands Brass Band Association competition at South Normanton in February 2015 and then,
on 8th March, they were second section winners at the Midland Area BBA Championships at Bedworth.
The results mean that, not only is the band looking forward to playing in the First Section in 2016 but they go forward with confidence to play
in the National Championships at Cheltenham in September.
The band has its roots dating back to the old Netherfield Railwayman's silver band formed in 1902 at Colwick locomotive depot part of the
Great Northern Railway. It has undergone a few transformations and name changes over the years but always remained true to its local
community roots. In 1988 the then called Carlton Silver Band gained sponsorship from Nottingham City Transport and two years later became
a Championship band. By 2002 there were three Brass Bands; Nottingham City Transport, Carlton Brass & Carlton Brass Training Band.
In May 2003 Carlton Brass performed in the stage version of ‘Brassed Off’ at the Nottingham Arts Theatre. It was an exciting and demanding
project requiring 7 performances over the 6 days. It was a great success with both band and cast receiving some excellent reviews on the
production as a whole and the quality of acting and music.
Carlton Brass is a local community based brass band, which promotes and encourages live music within the area of Nottinghamshire. The
bands main objective is to encourage and provide opportunities for all ages to play or learn a musical instrument, but particularly devote time
to the development of children from local schools. They would like to raise the bands profile and increase its standards by delivering a variety
of musical performances to a wider public audience.
The band is a registered charity and raises much of the money it needs through subscriptions, concerts and prize money.
If you wish to book the band to play at a venue of your choice, please contact the secretary Anne Keegan for further details :

Nature’s Friend
Our domestic gardens
now offer a significant
portion of the land
suitable for UK wildlife.
With increasing
demand for new
homes and roads it
means decreasing space
for nature, so gardens are
becoming increasingly
important in helping to
preserve biodiversity by
attracting and supporting
our native species.
He says: “Our
natural wildlife is
reliant on good
quality green
spaces and
green
corridors, such
as gardens and
parks, to
maintain viable
populations
across the urban
environment.
People must be
proactive in making this
happen and need to create
their green spaces in a way that encourages
wildlife to flourish. It’s not difficult; with just a
few planks of wood, some nails and a bit of
imagination it is possible to encourage
animals to regard our gardens as home.”
How to create thriving natural habitats in our
own back gardens:
However, most family gardens are not yet set
up in a way that encourages wildlife to
flourish, so Gerard Cheshire, the author of the
new Garden Wildlife Manual from Haynes, has
suggested five top tips for creating better
quality garden habitats and helping our
natural ecology.
His top five tips are:
1. Imitate nature
breezemagazine 34
By letting your garden become less well kept
you’ll find that nature begins to take care of
itself. Wild plants will have the chance to grow,
invertebrates will move in and they’ll be
followed by amphibians, reptiles, birds and
mammals, which will all want a piece of the
action. You should also always have a patch at
a different stage of succession as this will
optimise the number of species living in your
garden.
2.
Create microhabitats
Animals require a variety of spaces in the wild
for shelter, feeding, breeding and hibernation
so it is necessary to introduce artificial spaces
in your garden to mimic these. This can be
done by creating a variety of boxes, shelters
and dens, each suited to a particular purpose
and situated in its appropriate location.
3.
Provide food for species
Leaving food out can be great for animal
watching, but to make a real impact you
should encourage the food to grow naturally
in your garden. Seeding and planting
appropriate herbage will attract a variety of
species and help to develop a food chain.
Ponds can also serve a similar purpose and
attract a wide variety of species. (continues...)

4. Banish foreign plants
Foreign plant species will often have showy foliage or fancy blooms
but they have no place in the British ecosystem so they should be
replaced by plants that are part of the natural landscape, which our
wildlife has evolved alongside

Encourage movement
We should make it as easy as possible for animals to
move between green spaces, so create groundlevel openings. If animals find it easy to move
about then they are more likely to enter
your garden and stay around.
Note about the Author this month:
The Garden Wildlife Manual is an
informative guide to furnishing our gardens
with microhabitats and wildlife, putting
thought and effort into improving our piece
of the environment.
Organised according to the key animal groups,
it covers all manner of creatures that could set
up home in your garden, including mammals,
birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates,
and native plants that complement their habitats. It also
includes a variety of DIY projects to encourage wildlife, which
are illustrated with photographs and drawings, and include tools and material
lists.
It is one thing knowing about wild animals and another thing investing time
and effort to encourage animals into our gardens, which is why this manual
brings information and practical solutions together.
The book is conceived and written by Gerard Cheshire, a qualified ecologist
and wildlife expert, with experience of garden landscaping. It is full of
accessible, illustrated DIY projects that can be adapted to your own garden.

when things don’t go to plan you
decide to change routine annoying
someone but pleasing another.
Partners may not agree with one
idea you have but will give the
support when needed with gains
made to suit all. Wearing yourself
down to a frazzle is likely should
you ignore those early signs of
exhaustion.
GEMINI [May 21st-June 21st]
Making important decisions for
more than one person takes more
time than you anticipated. Once
that’s done and dusted you catch
up on what you feel has been
neglected. Changing direction in
one area of your life takes time but
well worth the effort long term. It
appears giving your opinion when
asked doesn’t go down well.

CANCER [June 22nd-July 23rd]
Overloaded and not enough time
to call your own you brush aside
the un-important which seems to
come your way and not others.
Helping out and doing your best is
recognised with unexpected long term rewards. Changing lifestyle
proves to be worth the effort with
lasting results. Time that you can
call your own comes in mid-month.
LIBRA [September 24th-Oct 22nd]
May has its moments for you to take
stock and bring changes, which
become beneficial. Meeting new and
influential people plays some part in
achieving set goals. Careful not to
overspend you keep an eye on things
when certain arrangements have
already been made. Making sure
papers are in order you move on to
the next stage.
LEO [July 24th-August 23rd]
A busy yet rewarding month one in
which you can arrange and rearrange to suit your own needs. A
time for reflection brings memories
of the past flooding in but these are
special which you hold dear.
Making changes in the home brings
lasting rewards. Whether it be new
furniture or completely different
colour schemes are rewarding.
SCORPIO [Oct 23rd-Nov22nd]
It is as though you are embarking on a
new wave of positive direction,
making sure you give life the best you
can. Being your own person and
listening to no one causes a little
disruption with one relationship. But
this is soon overcome. Making
adjustments and planning ahead
brings excitement. Travelling a little
more you enjoy the change.
VIRGO [August 24th-Sept23rd]
Feeling somewhat drained soon
passes when someone else is on
form. Your caring side shows
through when others turn their
back. Careful not to burn your
candle at both ends you take
control proving to others you will
not be used. Disappointed one
person hasn’t been in touch you
enquire only to find they have felt
the same as you.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23rd-Dec 22nd]
Knowing what is best for you and
yours brings the results needed. With
added responsibility you manage to
sort matters out for others without
putting too much pressure on
yourself. Not happy with one person
you make this known. Any arguments
are set aside while dealing with
important matters but soon resolved.
CAPRICORN [Dec
23rd-Jan 20th]
Happy to go with the
flow you become proud
to follow in someone else’s footsteps
for one day. Deciding what is best for
you on one occasion is frowned upon.
But this does not deter you from
achieving your goal. Learning new
skills and helping out proves your
worth. Changing diets joining groups
meeting new people brings joy.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21st-Feb 19th]
Whatever your thoughts are you keep
to yourself when you realise it’s not
worth the hassle to discuss one issue
raised recently. Choosing your time to
discuss the matter heals a rift as well
as looking good for future gains.
Taking a short break or making
arrangements to have one is certainly
on the cards. Careful not to overspend
3rd week.
PISCES [Feb 20th-March 20th]
A much stronger you is emerging with
a different attitude towards life in
general. Listening but not
commenting pays off especially when
someone is happy to gossip. Taking
no for an answer is difficult for a friend
or relation to accept especially when
you need more information from
them to allow closure on something
of concern.

Race to save Ratty as UK water voles face uncertain future
Launch of first National Water Vole Monitoring Programme
Once a familiar sight along our waterways, water voles have rapidly disappeared from much of
the landscape, experiencing the most serious decline of any wild mammal over the last century.
The shocking drop in numbers is due to the release and spread of non-native mink across the
countryside, and also theloss and degradation of much of our waterways. To ensure that we have
a better picture of what is happening to the species nationally and that we are in a position to act
quickly when needed, People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) is launching the first ongoing
National Water Vole Monitoring Programme across England, Scotland and Wales, working
in collaboration with The Wildlife Trusts, Natural Resources Wales, Scottish Natural Heritage,
Environment Agency, Natural England and RSPB.
Through the National Water Vole Monitoring Programme, PTES aims to bring together all the
valuable work that is being carried out across the country, as well as monitor selected historical
sites, to establish any changes in the population and to help guide future conservation efforts.
The Vincent Wildlife Trust conducted two national surveys between 1989-90 and 1996-98 that
first demonstrated the dramatic decline of water voles across Britain. The sites that were visited
during these two surveys will form the basis of the National Water Vole Monitoring Programme.
By regularly resurveying these sites, PTES will be able to identify any changes that have
happened since the late 1990s, as well as detect any emerging national trends.
PTES is calling for volunteers to get involved in the National Water Vole Monitoring
Programme by conducting an annual field survey on a single site and while no experience is
required, those taking part will need to learn how to identify water vole field signs. Participants
will be able to choose one or more of the nearly 900 pre-selected sites across England, Wales and
Scotland and will be expected to survey their individual site once a year. If you already monitor
water voles you can add your site and data to survey. To find out more about taking part please
visit www.ptes.org/watervoles
As Emily Thomas, who is coordinating the programme, concludes: “In the last couple of decades
conservation groups have been working hard to try and save the much loved water vole, however
it’s difficult to track the overall effectiveness of this work without seeing how the national picture
has changed since the 1990s. The National Water Vole Monitoring Programme will show us where
water voles are and in what numbers, as well as where they’ve disappeared, allowing us plan and
carry out effective conservation actions that will really make a difference to water voles.”

About water voles
The water vole (Arvicola
amphibius) is our largest vole and
is found throughout England,
Scotland and Wales. Their numbers
started to decline during the 1940s
and 1950s when the intensification
of agriculture caused the loss and
degradation of their habitat, but
the most devastating factor to
their decline occurred in the 1980s
and 1990s when American mink,
which had been breeding in the
wild since the mid-1950s,
were illegally released from fur
farms and spread across the
countryside. Between 1989 and
1998 the water vole population
crashed by almost 90%.
About PTES
PTES is a UK conservation charity
created in 1977 to ensure a future
for endangered species
throughout the world. Working to
protect some of our most
threatened wildlife species and
habitats, it provides practical
conservation support through
funding research and internships;
providing grant-aid for world-wide
and native mammals species
conservation; supporting
education, training and outreach
programmes; and driving public
participation via wildlife
monitoring surveys, publications,
campaigns and events. Priority
species and habitats include hazel
dormice, hedgehogs, water voles,
noble chafer and stag beetles and
traditional orchards and native
woodlands. 47_Layout 1 29/04/2015 16:55 Page 1
