In an opera by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti called The Elixir of Love , the potion referred to in the title has in reality no extraordinary powers, yet it is prized for its remarkable effects. Why? The supposed love potion is sold from town to town by a charlatan named Dr. Dulcamara. In one village, it is bought by a young man named Nemorino, who loves a wealthy farm owner named Adina. Nemorino fears that his chances are small, because, while she is well off, he belongs to the hoi polloi and has little but his love to offer her. In the second half of the opera, however, Nemorino’s wealthy uncle dies and leaves the young man a fortune.

Although neither the Nemorino nor his beloved knows this yet, Adina, who had previously not taken

Nemorino him, does a volte-face and proclaims her love for him. The other villagers believe that Nemorino’s good fortune is symptomatic of the powers brought on by the elixir and make haste to buy many bottles.
