COLLEGE PARKING FEES Parking space is available at the College on a limited basis. A daily parking fee is charged (at most campuses). Drivers requiring in/out privileges must have the daily receipt validated when entering. A day receipt is not valid after 5 p.m. As a Seneca student, you may develop personal concerns around self-confidence, stress or relationships. Sometimes problems with motivation and achievement may arise. Counsellors will help you deal with the inter-related demands of personal and academic responsibilities. Confidential appointments with professional counsellors are available to prospective students at most Seneca campuses. DISABILITY SERVICES If you are learning disabled, mobility impaired, blind or visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing, or are coming from a school where you used a “resource room” to assist you in your studies, you may require special assistance. Students, staff and community members are provided with the finest in fitness programming. Members can use the centre seven days per week and take advantage of the strength and circuit training equipment, treadmills, stairmasters, recumbent and upright bikes, rowers, elliptical crosstrainers and free weights. Regularly scheduled fitness classes come with your membership. Memberships also include on-going fitness evaluations and individualized fitness programs by our certified staff. Seneca@York - The Fitness Centre at Seneca@York is located in the Recreation Centre. Run on a cost-recovery/program fee basis, the centre is a student facility that offers a variety of conditioning equipment including free weights, circuit training, stairmasters, aerobics and step aerobics. FOOD SERVICES Large, pleasant cafeterias serve most campuses of Seneca College. Service is provided for both day and evening students. Meal cards are available at the food outlets for purchase, at the main campuses. Many of our roadways are fire routes and, as such, are governed by local bylaws. Unauthorized vehicles or illegal parking will result in the issuance of parking tickets (fines) and possibly towing the vehicle off the site. This self-help service provides students with a listing of a variety of affordable types of accommodation to meet their needs during the school year. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND TELECOMMUNICATION RESOURCES Students at Seneca College are supported with high quality and accessible Information Technology resources and services. Each campus provides access to a wide variety of general purpose and specialized computing laboratories. Each campus also provides access to a physical or on-line Learning Commons (including open access microcomputing centres) where students can access electronic resources for writing, research and curriculum purposes. Teams of support personnel consisting of help desk technical and learner support specialists, librarians and faculty, ensure that relevant materials and services are available to every student. Students at Seneca College receive personal e-mail accounts, one-card services for identification and access to printers and photocopying, and dial-in access (full time students only), to College networks and the World Wide Web. SIRIS (the Student Internet Registration and Information System) gives students individual web browser access to register for subjects, customize timetables, access their financial accounts, view academic records and perform diploma subject audits. In open microcomputing centres, students are able to access general (e.g. email, word processing, spreadsheet) and specialized software applications. Available specialized software is dependent on the campus and the academic requirements and offerings at a particular campus. All College computers have full internet access. Students living in residence may bring personal computers to the College and connect them to the College network (ethernet card required) to receive e-mail and web services. Student Help Desk services are available to students via the web, in-person (Seneca@York and Newnham) and via telephone. 22 2005 / 2006 Full Time Program Calendar The Business, Technology, Computer Studies, and Communication Arts Faculties offer access to specialized computer software and hardware such as SAP enterprise resource planning software, IBM RISC-6000 servers, CAD systems, graphics, digital video editing and animation systems. My.Seneca is a new one-stop online resource providing access to course materials, the option to look up resources and the tools to communicate with faculty/instructors and other students. Utilizing Portal Technology, My.Seneca is customizable so that clients can get just the information that they want. My.Seneca is available to all students of the College on-site and remotely. LAB SCHOOL AND CHILD CARE CENTRE Graduates of Seneca College can now benefit from the Newnham and King Campus based Lab Schools and Child Care Centres. A mix of excellent facilities are provided, which are clean, bright, and well equipped. Professional and dedicated staff share their personal warmth and enthusiasm with the children, who receive high quality child care. The Lab Schools provide a model for the education of the adult students working toward obtaining their qualification for the field of Early Childhood Education (E.C.E.). The faculty continue to be involved in the Lab School in their role as resource to the Lab School staff for the continuous evaluation and development of our E.C.E. program. Lab School staff are specially selected to demonstrate excellence with respect to the provision of high quality child care as well as the training of E.C.E. students. LEARNING COMMONS Seneca College has a Library and Learning Commons at the King, Newnham and Seneca@York campuses and a Library under development at the new Markham campus. The Learning Commons is a one-stop facility for students, staff and faculty combining the Library, Audio-Visual Services, Learning Centre and Computing Commons. Types of services offered include a 24 hour Internet Reference Service ‘Ask the Library’, a Live Reference Chat Service ‘Ask Us Now’, web database searching, subject-specific links to valuable web sites, our Book/Serial/Media catalogue, and a webbased booking system for tutoring appointments. The Audio-Visual Services departments provide an extensive collection of video and media resources for classroom use. Also available is a variety of equipment such as digital cameras, computer projectors, TV/VCRs, video cameras, laptop computers, CD/tape recorders and more. There are Learning Centres located at our King, Newnham and Seneca@York campuses that offer tutoring and academic assistance to all students. This service is offered in partnership with faculty advisors, student advisors and tutors, who ensure students receive the assistance they need in a friendly and supportive environment. Student Services The Computing Commons provides computer workstations equipped with instructional software and information resources that support course curriculum and are supported by library and information technology staff. A student doing an assignment in the Learning Commons can check databases, “surf the Internet”, use courseware, consult a manual, seek research or computer advice, and be tutored without leaving their workstation or our facility. As a full-time student, you pay an activity fee which goes to support your elected student government. The objective of the student government is to provide programs, services and activities to meet your interests and needs. For example, Seneca has its own student newspaper, The Buzz, and a campus radio station operating out of the Newnham Campus. Seneca@York operates a student space, “The Hive”. The four local student councils Newnham, Seneca@York, King and Don Mills - organize many activities throughout the year. LOCKERS Lockers may be rented for a nominal fee on a first-come, first-served basis. Each locker is equipped with a combination lock, which remains the property of the College. OMBUDSPERSON The Ombudsperson is committed to helping achieve a fair outcome to problems or complaints about College policies, procedures or practices if they have not been resolved through the College’s regular procedures or channels. The Ombudsperson provides a service to students and employees of the College that is confidential, objective, impartial, independent and accessible. RESIDENCES FOR STUDENTS The College has a 1000-bed residence at Newnham campus and a 233-bed residence at King campus. Both facilities are operated by Campus Living Centres. Each 400 square foot furnished unit contains two bedrooms, washroom and kitchenette, with full voice and data communication links. In addition, the buildings contain group study rooms on each floor, and larger meeting and activity rooms on the main floor. Residences are smoke free environments. The facilities and services include: Looneys, Missing Link (student pub), CRSC (radio station), Games room, meeting rooms, and offices for the Student Federation Council. The “Hive” at the Seneca@York campus is the centre for student activities at that campus. The mandate is to provide facilities, services and activities which respond to the diverse needs of the campus community. The Senecentre provides many part-time job opportunities for students. A $5.00 maintenance fee for the Senecentre is charged each semester to students in full time programs at the Newnham Campus. Seneca College is a fully a smoke-free environment. This applies to all College locations. STUDENT GOVERNMENT The Seneca Student Federation Inc. (SSF) is the incorporated body that represents all full-time students. The President of the corporation is selected from the local council of presidents, through an election process. Elections for the local councils are held in March of each year, with by-elections in October. Training is provided and it is an excellent way to learn new skills, meet new people, and get involved in College life. By getting involved in student council, you not only develop leadership skills but you also become eligible for one of the many leadership scholarships available at Seneca. There are also many student associations and clubs to meet the interests of a diverse group of students.
