KEY FEATURES
of the
ALWD Guide to Legal Citation, 5E
At the core of the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation teaching package is the sleek new
Fifth Edition. A citation manual that covers what is most important for all users,
the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation has been judiciously reduced in size to offer:
„„
Coverage of the most important aspects of legal citation in just 40 rules.
„„
Explains and illustrates the modifications needed for citing sources in scholarly writing,
letting students easily contrast the formats side by side in the same rule.
Student-friendly design that retains the best of previous editions (Snapshots, Fast Formats,
sidebars, structural diagrams, updated examples, etc.).
„„
Eliminates all style differences between ALWD and The Bluebook.
„„
After surveying legal writing professors across the country regarding the needs of
the legal writing community, the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation, Fifth Edition,
eliminates the differences with other citation manual rules so students can use the
guide during law school and in practice. The guide is shorter than before and focuses on
the rules most practitioners use, while also providing guidance on how to cite in scholarly
articles. With the hard work of Coleen Barger, the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation
will be the only book on citation that law students and lawyers will ever have to buy.
The guide is a strong pedagogical tool. Every student that purchases a guide will have
access to an online companion, an interactive citation teaching program that will
instruct them on how to cite, explain the rules, and provide quizzes that are self-graded.
With the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation and its online companion, the students will be
able to learn how to cite on their own time.

The new author of the fifth edition is Coleen Barger,
Professor of Law at the University of Arkansas at Little
Rock Bowen School of Law. Coleen has been involved in every
previous edition of the Manual, reviewing each manuscript
as a member of the ALWD Citation Manual Advisory Committee.
She’s had a long-term scholarly interest in legal citation, from
writing an article about neutral citations in 1999 to examining
courts’ citation of sources on the Internet. She and Professor
Brooke Bowman are the authors of the first edition of the
ALWD Companion, and they are coordinating the two new
editions of the Guide and the Companion.
