FLU VACCINATIONS
If you are aged 65 or over, or suffer from chronic respiratory disease (including
asthma), chronic heart disease, chronic renal disease, diabetes or have a weak immune
system then you may be more at risk from flu. If you are a carer and
the person you look after may be at risk if you become ill then you
are also eligible for a flu vaccination. Appointments can now be
booked for you to either attend during a flu clinic, or during a routine
appointment if more convenient. Flu is a highly contagious viral
infection that tends to occur in epidemics during the winter. Unfortunately, as flu
viruses are always changing, this winters flu will be slightly different from last
winters. The infection mainly affects the upper respiratory tract (airways) and unlike
other common viruses such as chickenpox or measles, there is not just one type of flu
virus but several different types. These types themselves change frequently, so getting
flu once does not provide protection against a future attack. Flu is spread through the
droplets released into the air when a sufferer sneezes or coughs. The virus may be
caught from breathing in these droplets or by having contact with surfaces where they
have settled. Some-one who has flu is usually infectious for about a week
Nasal flu spray will be available for those aged under 18 from 1st October for those
who are at risk and also those aged 2, 3 and 4 years old
Named GP for all Patients
All patients at our Practice have a named GP to oversee their care. You may already
have been told who your named GP is at some point during the last 1-2 years; for
those of you who haven’t yet been told, our aim is to let you know before the end of
March 2016. Please ask next time you make contact with the practice if you would
like to know who your named GP is. For those of you whose named GP has left the
practice we will inform you of his or her replacement.
You are unlikely to see any notable change in the way care is delivered to you by our
practice, just a formalisation of our current process.
The responsibilities of your named GP will be to:
• Take the lead responsibility for ensuring that all appropriate services required by
you from the GP practice are provided.
• Where required, use their professional judgement, to work with relevant health and
social care professionals to deliver a care package that meets your needs.
• Ensure your physical and psychological needs are recognised and responded to by
the relevant clinicians in the practice
• Ensure you have access to a health check if requested.
These responsibilities will be carried out within the opening hours of the Surgery and
do not change the way you or other patients currently access care outside of these
hours.
You must continue to book appointments with the Practice in the same way. If you
require an appointment with a GP urgently and are unable to book it with your
‘named GP’ please book in with another available doctor.
