Education Programs
The National Museum of World
War II Aviation provides unique
educational experiences that
promote a deeper understanding
of the historical importance of
American aviation in World War
II and its role in shaping the
world in which we live.
Our mission is to
preserve and strengthen the best
traditions of the American

K-12 Education Programs
The National Museum of World War II
Aviation has contracted with the Colorado
Consortium for Earth and Space Science
Education (operator of the Challenger Learning
Center of Colorado) to provide unique, handson educational STEM experiences for students in
grades K-12. Thanks to a generous endowment
from the Slattery Family Foundation, we are able
to provide these programs free of charge to
interested schools, homeschool organizations,
and other educational groups. All museum
programs are aligned with Colorado State
Standards and teach science, technology,
engineering and math concepts using the
history of WWII as the foundation.
PROGRAMS
SKY’S THE LIMIT
(GRADES K-1)
Students take part in hands-on, interactive
activities that explore the forces and axes of
flight and the parts of an airplane. All
activities are conducted in the museum’s
aircraft hangar, where students have the
chance to get close to restored vintage aircraft.
KEEP ’EM ROLLING
learned about in the novel, and they will use
the materials collected from their salvage
drive to build prototype aircraft in their
own WWII aircraft production factory.
(GRADES 2-3)
Students experience hands-on, engaging stations that explore the forces of flight and
fundamentals of aircraft design, as well as the
“human” side of the World War II era, as
they discover how events of the time affected
the choices and interactions of individuals and
groups.
K-12 programs are offered on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays, and include an interactive tour of the museum and hands-on activities.
Teachers are provided with background lessons
and training that will prepare their students for
their museum trip and enhance their learning
experience.
KEEP ’EM FLYING
(GRADES 6-8)
Students explore the forces and principles
of flight and motion and discover how aircraft work, At the museum they will have a
chance to see how these forces drove the
design and performance of World War II
aircraft, and use this information to design
their own aircraft and carry out a
demanding U.S. Army Air Force mission.
WINGS UP
SALVAGE FOR VICTORY
(GRADES 4-8)
Based around the children’s novel On the
Wings of Heroes by Richard Peck, this program
focuses on the recycling and rationing efforts
that took place on the WWII home front.
Students use math, literacy, and research
skills to discover the role that
salvage played in the war effort. Students will
also conduct their own classroom salvage
drive. At the museum, students will get the
chance to see many of the artifacts that they
(GRADES 9-12)
Students investigate the scientific principles
and mathematical calculations that go into
the design of aircraft wings and how these
designs affect aircraft performance. At the
museum, students will combine the
knowledge gained during the pre-lessons
with the onsite aircraft and artifacts into a
real-world application of their math and
science skills while discovering how the
wing design of aircraft ultimately affected
the war effort.
