Seminar is an workshop designed to help
farm owners learn to improve the quality of
their pastures, store and utilize manure nutrients, develop sacrifice areas, and protect
environmentally sensitive areas. Participants
will use this knowledge to prepare a manure
management plan for their farm and will
leave the workshop with a completed plan.

Manure Management Plan Writing
Are you aware that all farms generating or land applying manure in PA, regardless of size, are
required to have a written manure management plan?
Participants that complete the short course will leave with:
- Knowledge on current regulations, why they are needed, and who is affected
- Constructed and detailed farm maps
- A completed Manure Management Plan, that complies with state regulations
Pastures
Are you interested in learning how to manage pastures to increase quality, reduce weeds, and
maintain dense vegetation?
Participants that complete the short course will have an understanding of:
- Forage biology, and management
- Benefits and potential risks associated with grazing
- Importance of rotational grazing, and mowing pastures
- Hands-on approach to evaluating pastures
- Properly collecting soil samples and interpreting test results
Manure Storage and Application
Are you properly storing manure to prevent nutrient loss? Are you applying manure nutrients to
pastures or crop fields at rates that plants can appropriately utilize?
Participants that complete the short course will have an understanding of:
- Constructing and locating a manure storage site to benefit the farm and the environment
- Maximum manure application rates
- Restrictions for applying manure near surface water and environmentally sensitive areas
Animal Concentration Areas (ACAs)
Are you interested in learning how ACAs, stress lots, heavy use areas can improve pasture
quality?
Participants that complete the short course will have an understanding of:
- Proper ACA location, management, and construction
- Importance of utilizing planned ACAs
- Managing ACAs to prevent negative environmental impacts
