invertebrates: implications for connectivity.
University of California, Santa Barbara
B.S., Aquatic Biology, summa cum laude, June 2001.
Honors Thesis: Role of lipid stores in the annual variability of Antarctic krill fecundity.
RESEARCH INTERESTS: larval dispersal via physical oceanographic events; application of
genetic approaches to understanding mechanisms facilitating and impeding connectivity;
hydrothermal vents; post-settlement selection
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:
WHOI, Department of Biology
2001-present
Advisor: Lauren Mullineaux
Woods Hole, MA
− Experimentally investigate the role of post-settlement selection on the connectivity and
reproductive success of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, in estuaries and open-ocean habitats.
- Redesign published and develop new microsatellite loci.
- Field studies of survivorship of laboratory reared mussels.
− Genetically and morphologically identify deep-sea gastropod larvae.
− Field study of currents and temporal variability in vent gastropod larvae to infer retention and
larval sources at hydrothermal vents.
− Investigate the role of mesoscale eddies in larval dispersal and population connectivity in the
deep-sea using primitive equation modeling, numerical modeling and field observations.
− Population genetics of the vent shrimp, Rimicaris exoculata, along the Northern Mid-Atlantic
Ridge.
