Biopsychology is one of the most complicated and complex units we will be studying this year. To aid
us in our understanding of our nervous system and how it works, we will be working on a webquest.
Your task is to visit the following website: http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/introb.html
Step 1: Go to – Common questions about the brain and neuroscience – Read about How big is the
brain? (How much does the brain weigh?) Also read How many neurons (nerve cells) are in the
brain? How big are they? Write the answers to this question below.
Step 2: Scroll down the home page (http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/introb.html) until you get to
the section labeled ‘Higher Functions’
Choose ANY FOUR of the sections from below. Read about them and answer the questions below.

Chocolate and the Nervous System: What is the connection between chocolate and the nervous
system? Can we really get a chocolate high?

Do we really only use 10% of our brain?: Is this true? Why or why not? What does it mean to only
use 10% of your brain?

Smart Drugs: Are there drugs or other substances that can actually make is smarter? If so, how
could they make us ‘smarter’?



Moonstruck! Does The Full Moon Influence Behavior?: Does the full moon influence behavior?
Why do you think this? What’s the problem with studying the ‘lunar effect?’

until you come to ‘The Effects of Drugs on the Nervous System.’ Pick THREE of the drugs from the list
and answer the questions: ‘What is the drug?’ ‘What are its effects on behavior?’ ‘What are its effects
on the nervous system (which neurotransmitters are involved)?’ State one more ‘fun fact’ you
learned from reading the section.
