During the Prohibition Era, the Ryde became famous as
a speakeasy and casino. The hotel attracted celebrities
of all types from presidents and politicians to movie
stars and mobsters. Al Jolson, Jack London and Dashiel
Hamet were frequent guests as well as Herbert Hoover who

Day 1: Fresno
Travel to the San Joaquin Valley and the city of Fresno.
Spend the night at the Sheraton Hotel. (D)
Day 2: Sacramento/River Cruise
Head to Stockton for a river cruise through the San
Joaquin Delta for a glimpse into the city’s rich maritime
past. Re-board your motorcoach and continue on to
Sacramento. The city’s history began in 1839 when
Johann Augustus Sutter settled at the confluence of the
American and Sacramento Rivers. Gold was discovered in
1848, just 30 miles east of the town. Upon arrival, tour the
beautiful California State Capitol constructed in the late
19th century and patterned after the one in Washington,
D.C. Spend the next two nights at the Holiday Inn Capitol
Plaza, near Old Town. (B)
California’s picturesque foothills were forever changed
when James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill
and set off the largest gold rush in history. See some of
the reminders of this abundantly rich history as you travel
along part of Hwy 49 as it winds through the Mother Lode
mining towns of days gone by. The trail ends in Sonora
where you will overnight at the Sonora Oaks Hotel. (B)
Day 5: Oakdale / Dinner Train
Travel to Jamestown to explore the exciting Railtown 1887
State Historic Park, home to America’s last operating
roundhouse. Known as “The Movie Railroad,” its historic
locomotives and cars have starred in hundreds of film and
television shows including “High Noon” and “Petticoat
Junction.” Re-board your motorcoach and head to
Oakdale. The Sierra Railroad was built in 1897 connecting
the Gold Country and Central Valley. The railroad now
hosts the Sierra Railroad Dinner Train, regarded as one of
the best dinner trains in the West. Enjoy delicious food,
luxurious cars, unspoiled scenery and great entertainment.
