Text:
1. Introductory Linear Algebra by Kolman and Hill, 8th edition
2. Student Solutions Manual by Kletzing
Topics from the text:
Chapter 1: 1.1 – 1.4, 1.6, 1.7
Chapter 3: 3.1 & 3.2
Chapter 4: 4.1 & 4.2
Chapter 6: 6.1 – 6.9
Chapter 8: 8.1 – 8.3
Chapter 10: 10.1 – 10.3
Additional topics (if time permits):
Half-baked group theory: finite groups and isomorphisms
Grading Scheme:
1. Two term tests: 25% each (October 11, November 15)
2. Quizzes: 10%
3. Final: 40%
Important notes:
1. No make-up exams will be given. You must inform me before the exam date should
you not be able to write it. The average of other midterms and the final will replace
exams that you missed only if you provide me with a medical note. To pass this course,
you will have to write at least one of the two term tests and the final exam.
2. This will be a heavy theory course. You are expected to know all the definitions and
proofs discussed in class, as well as ones assigned as homework exercises. It is highly
recommended that you try all the theoretical exercises in the text. At the end of the course,
you will have learned various key concepts on vector space theory and be able to read
and write mathematical proofs on vector space related topics.
