Workshops 11 April 2013
9.00 - 12.30 WORKSHOP A
Exploring new funding opportunities and research funding models
Obtaining maximum research grants is imperative for a university to ensure sustainable resources and infrastructures are in place for quality
research and success. Facing the challenges of operating in a changing financial and funding landscape, universities need to adopt a forwardlooking strategy in sourcing for new funding opportunities. In this workshop, Graham will discuss effective approaches to identify funding
mechanisms and how to compose a compelling research proposal to attain grants. He will cover:
•
An overview of changes in funding mechanisms and how to stay ahead of the competition in getting research grants
•
How to identify funding opportunities to support research and innovation
•
‘Do’s and don’ts’ of writing research proposals for funding
•
Developing strategic frameworks that improve research performance
12.30 - 1.30 NETWORKING LUNCH
1.30 - 5.00
WORKSHOP B
Building international collaborative research partnerships
Highly successful institutions focus on building strong partnership networks with industry players, outstanding academic institutions and other
organisations that can support institutional growth, further develop research capability and leverage university ranks and reputation. This practical
workshop will impart effective strategies for engaging in meaningful joint research endeavours for research success, covering:
•
Identifying and establishing meaningful research sector collaborations
•
Growing research capabilities through strategic industry collaboration
•
International research funding strategies – Leveraging partnerships for funding support
•
Executing and managing global collaborations and research networks successfully
Expert Facilitator: Dr Graham Steed Managing Director
G R Steed & Associates
With over 30 years of experience in his field, Dr Graham Steed is a respected expert in the administration and management of research projects. He
established G R Steed & Associates in 1998 as a highly specialised firm focusing on consulting services for research management and has since
managed a significant number of complex national and international R&D programs for research investors, research providers, industry, government, as
well as higher education institutions to ensure that stakeholder’s returns on and from R&D are maximised. The firm specialises in providing consulting
services to the Higher Education research sector in Australia and internationally, particularly improving project submission quality and research funding
proposals. During his years of working extensively with universities he has also gained significant experience in establishing and coordinating global
research partnerships and developing international funding strategies.
His recent work with the University of Melbourne is focused on developing collaborative research projects between expert University research teams and
a wide range of industry, government and corporate organisations. The objective of this research is to solve significant industry problems for the benefit
of that industry and the wider community.
Graham is also a Program Manager on an international collaborative research project on Water Futures for Sustainable Cities for the Universitas 21
Group of Universities, the leading global network of research-intensive universities that work together to foster global citizenship and institutional
innovation through collaborative research activities and wide advocacy for internationalisation. Key aspects of this role are to form the best research
teams, obtain research funds and then to manage the agreed research activities with people located around the world.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Operating in an increasingly competitive, complex and internationalised business environment, the pursuit of world-class research performance has
become a pressing challenge for higher education institutions. To distinguish the University against the competition and emerge as a prestigious
academic centre it is crucial for Universities to build strong foundations for research management and training. It is also important to leverage
partnerships and seize opportunities for collaboration across borders and institutional boundaries. The changing research funding landscape must
also be navigated to ensure that research productivity and outputs are optimised.
Liquid Learning is delighted to present the International Higher Education University Research Performance 2013, an exciting new international
forum which will provide the unique opportunity to network, share ideas and benchmark progress with fellow research leaders and professionals
from a wide range of institutions and jurisdictions. This interactive, case-study driven event will draw on experiences and key lessons learnt from
some of the most accomplished research institutions across the world, providing delegates with fresh perspectives and insights for enhancing
research quality and performance in the pursuit of building a world-class research institution.
