Sub-Saharan Africa Vocabulary
Poaching- to hunt or fish illegally
Drought- a long period with little or no precipitation
Habitat-natural environment of living plant or animal
Refugee-a person who flees a place to find safety
Apartheid- the legal separation of the races; a system that
denies black South Africans their rights
Savanna- grassland as in the South of Sub-Saharan Africa
Canopy- a roof over a rainforest created by tree tops
Epidemic- an outbreak of a disease effecting a great number of
the population in a particular community
Push/pull factors- reasons why people migrate; “push” factors
cause them to leave, “pull” factors make them come to a place.
Endangered Species-is a species which has been categorized by
the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red
List as likely to become extinct.
Sorghum- a widely cultivated cereal native to warm regions of
the Old World. It is a major source of grain and of feed for
livestock.
Cacao- beanlike seeds from which cocoa, cocoa butter, and
chocolate are made.
Slavery- the state of being a slave
Genocide- the deliberate killing of a large group of people,
especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.
