The Mahoosuc Arts Council has been making significant contributions to the cultural
enrichment and creative economic development of the Greater Bethel Area since
1986 through a variety of school and community arts programming.
The council strives to build much-needed and meaningful visual and performing
arts-educational programs for K-12 students in a rural district through annual performing arts series, artist in residency programs and theater residencies. The council
is also committed to building community arts events for all ages which provide
economic opportunities for artists and local businesses.
The council is a leader in collaborative programming and operations and is a member of the Bethel Area Nonprofit Collaborative, the Western Maine Arts+Business
Collaborative, the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, the Maine Alliance for Arts
Education and the Western Maine Cultural Alliance.
In 2011, the State of Maine and Maine Association of Nonprofits recognized the
council with the Dirigo Award for Nonprofit Excellence for the scope and effectiveness of our mission impact.
While our work continues to gain recognition for its importance and high quality, the
economy keeps working away at funding sources which were previously reliable. In
addition to becoming creative and collaborative with our fundraising strategy, we
are still forced to make some tough cuts for the first time. Ultimately our cuts mean
less educational experience for our students, less money earned by artists, fewer
customers drawn into Western Maine businesses.
We urge you to support arts education for our students and economic opportunities for artists and businesses by making a tax-deductible gift to the Mahoosuc Arts
Council today, no matter how small, with the donation form included in this guide.
We would love to thank you with a returned gift of concert tickets to one of our
upcoming performances.
Your support combined with our commitment and passion to uphold our mission will
ensure quality educational and community impact for years to come.
Sincerely,
Aranka K. Matolcsy

2012 Summer Bandstand Concert Series
Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, kids, dogs and snacks!
Held on the historic Bethel Common every Sunday of August at 4 p.m.
Rain location: Bingham Auditorium, 45 Church Street, Bethel, Maine
Aug. 5 - Guitarist & Songwriter Terry Swett
Originally from the Lakes Region of southwestern
Maine, this songwriter & guitarist traveled extensively around the U.S., painting signs and sometimes
singing for his supper. Those days inspired his first real
song writing. He refers to his earlier originals as a
“Travelogue of Folkish Ditties” Thirty years later, Terry
still makes signs for a living and still writes song and
performs all over Western Maine including the Moore
Park Art Show in South Paris and Tuckers Pub in Norway. His songs are about the simple things in life like
home towns, love or God.
Aug. 12 - Jewel & Donnie
A very popular and talented Bethel duo, Donnie
and Jewel are a Banstand series cornerstone. This
duo plays many old and new favorites and are a
favorite act of families, and folks of all ages. Jewel,
a true gem in the crown of Bethel, is also a one-ofa kind award-winning performer with her yodeling
expertise and an extremely versatile and sensitive
voice. This Bethel duo offers something for everyone
with music from Country and Folk to Blues and Rockn-Roll, spiced with originals here and there. And of
course, there’ll be some “yodeling,” an art Jewel
inherited from her Dad, Yodeling Slim Clark. http://
www.jewelwhatever.com/.
Aug. 19 - Swift River Jazz Band
Aug. 26 Guitarist & Songwriter
Phil Poirier
This group of Dixieland enthusiasts have been playing
together all over Maine & New Hampshire for the
past 7 years, delighting audiences of all ages. A rich
horn section is supported by a lady drummer who
really rocks. The skilled instrumentalists and energetic
vocals will take you on a fun journey through classics and favorites like you were on Burbon Steet in old
New Orleans. Come join: Kent Schneider, Director,
trumpet, vocals; Betty Schneider, drums; Ernie Mills,
Business Manage , trombone; Mary Mills, keyboard;
Dave Killkelley, clarinet.
Phil Poirier’s all-original music has been described as “contemporary folk with a touch of the blues” His new CD “in the morning” was
recorded at Outlook Studio in Bethel and has some great guitar and
drum backup work by Pat Malia, and bass by Ted St.Pierre. It features
strong, thoughtful lyrics and a great, hook-driven melodic sensibility.
For years, Phil Poirier was a successful artist in the Portland
ME, area, showing in several of the larger galleries in southern Maine.
He is a winner of the Monhegan Artists’ Residency in 1996. With the
upheaval of 9/11 he found his creative focus shifting along with the
fluctuating art market. In 2004, Phil moved to “the hinterlands” as he
calls his new hometown, Livermore Falls and began focusing more
purposefully on music.
Phil considers himself a songwriter first and performer second. “When I was paint-
ing, writing music kept me sane, so it seemed natural that something that never had the negatives I associated with art could be allowed to come to the fore.” philpoiriermusic.com

of millions of board feet of lumber through thick
forests and down crooked waterways, to the millsusing only horses, oxen and manpower. They were unique in their character, ethics, morals,
strength, and skills, and they symbolize Maine’s gritty and resilient reputation. These are some
of the most notable figures in Maine’s history; yet their stories, personalities and significance
are largely overlooked by educators and historians. The illustration that In The Blood provides,
sheds a new light on the character, history, and importance of these legendary Maine men.
The performance incorporates film, live, original music and projections of still images.

This is a new group that Phill McIntyre of the
Skye Theatre put together to perform at the
American Folk Festival under the Celtic Colours banner. They are not a band but rather
individual performers and emerging artists from
Cape Breton in Nova Scotia – taking their name
from the word five in Gaelic. Colin Grant is the leader and has a dynamic band called
Sprag Session. Three of the members in Sprag Session are in this group, and will be returning
from the Milwaukee Irish Fest just in time for this performance. Colin Grant, Chrissy Crowley,
Darren McMullen, Rachel Davis, & Jason Roach made a reunion show at the Festival Club
at Celtic Colours this past October and where booked for Irish Fest in Milwaukee, and the
Celtic Festival in Laurien, France. The best of the new generation will return for a very special week in Maine & NH.

Lajos Matolcsy was born in Szerencs Hungary in 1905. The young Matolcsy earned his law
degree to appease his parents, but then attended Royal Hungarian Academy where he
earned a degree in Fine Art. Matolcsy became a professor and regional minster of education. His work began earning recognition by the most elite art circles in Europe in the
mid-1930s. He was regularly featured in exhibits in Budapest, Berlin, Vienna when the Nazi’s
invaded Hungary in WWII. Matolcsy was drafted back into the Hungarian Calvary where
he would face invading tanks from horseback. Before the Soviet occupation, the Professor was given emergency discharge and allowed to flee the country – as a member of the
resistance and an intellectual he would have been sought for execution. He left with what
he could carry: a trunk stuffed with paintings, sketch books and portfolios, his baby spoon
and photos of his first daughter. He sailed to the US, entering through Ellis Island. He found
refuge in Central Park and made stew from free condiments at city cafeterias. The Professor
soon connected with the Hungarian community which welcomed him and gave him the
support to start teaching and open an art studio. Renowned mime Tony Montanaro met the
artist and introduced him to modern dancer Claire Couri, whose family was from Buckfield,
Maine. Claire and Lajos were married in 1958 and moved to an old farm in South Paris which
became an art and dance teaching studio. By 1962 the charismatic arts professor had
organized a collection of fine artists and founded the Western Maine Art Group. Before the
group had a formal center, artists would meet at each other’s homes to host lessons with the
Professor. In Bethel, he taught a number of notable artists in the summer kitchen the Taylor’s
farmhouse including Faye Taylor, Helen Morton, founder of the Bethel Art Fair, Jo and Romeo
Baker and man more. In 1965, the group obtained a schoolhouse in Norway and opened
a center for the arts which continues today to provide opportunities for artists as well as the
community. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, the Professor gained wide acclaim in Maine
and beyond winning many arts shows, exhibiting in prestigious and solo shows and opening
teaching studios in Portland and Lewiston. In 1982 Professor Matolcsy was honored Chamber Citizen of the Year. He passed away peacefully that year leaving a large following of
students and patrons, many of whom carry on his legacy today through their own creative
journeys.
