Introduction
The 4100 Machinist Performance Test is a performance test designed to cover the
major knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the job. This Guide contains
strategies to use for taking tests and provides information regarding the major job
activities covered in the test. It also provides references to help prepare for the test.
Test Session

You will NOT be able to bring or use your own tools, material, equipment, or
calculator during testing.
Personal Protective Equipment
For safety purposes, personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times
during the performance test. Standard Safety glasses with side shields will be provided.

Information Guide Feedback
At the end of this Guide you have been provided with an Information Guide Feedback
page. If a procedure or policy has changed, making any part of this Guide incorrect, your
feedback would be appreciated so that corrections can be made.
You will receive a Test Comment form so that you can make comments about test
questions. Write any comments you have and turn it in with your test when you are

Test 4100 Description
The 4100 Machinist Performance Test requires you to perform tasks similar to those
performed on the job as a Machinist. This test will require you to demonstrate your skills
related to machinery, by machining a part to the specifications provided. This
assessment will also require you to demonstrate your ability to use tools and equipment
common to the Machinist position, such as lathes, mills, measurement tools, grinders,
drills, and other tools. A description of the major tasks covered on the performance test
may be found below.
Reading job blueprints to determine job specifications.
Determining method of operation to proceed with machining work.
Choosing tooling per the requirements of the job.
Determining feeds and speeds to determine proper cutting settings.
Inspecting cutting machine and components to ensure machine is ready for use.
Determining how to hold material or part(s) to prevent accidents.
Indicating or checking the part on the machine to ensure proper setup.
Setting tools to ensure they are prepared for cutting.
Positioning and fastening work piece.
Using cutting tools to perform cutting operations.
Monitoring the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
Monitoring cutting process and checking size to print or sample.
Measuring, examining, and testing completed units to detect deficits and ensure
conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
