Thank you to everyone who was a part of it! It was truly amazing to see so many people turn out in the pouring rain for this event. Kids and adults alike were entertained by the Creature Teacher and her “friends” and even got to pet a few of them! Look at the pictures to see what kind of animals you can find! Teens found their own space and did their “teen thing” together, including texting friends who didn’t come, giving them a hard time. They truly love to spend time with their SB buddies! Adults enjoyed catching up with old friends, talking to young kids and then went home and Facebooked those that didn’t come! Everyone from newborns to not-so newborns enjoyed visiting with Santa, who spoke to them in English, Spanish and even Sign-Language! Santa had a trail of children everywhere he went. From face-painting to eating snacks, there was too much fun to be had and too little time. Maybe we should have a longer party next year? Or better yet, let’s get together more often! We couldn’t have had such a fun event without our Sponsors and Volunteers. The OCC continues to support SBANT and provided toys from Santa, the Cookie Decorating Station and many volunteers! Volunteers representing Bank of America, Girl Scout Troop, The Southern Cross and many friends and family members worked hard to make this event safe and fun! Enjoy these pictures and look for many more to be placed on Facebook and spinabifidant.org! Our mission is to promote the prevention of Spina Bifida and to enhance the lives of all affected. My wife, Anne, and I have a 5 year old daughter, Taylor, who has Myelomeningocele with Hydrocephalus. Shortly after she was born, we attended several events to learn more about Spina Bifida and meet other parents. Since then, Anne and I have been actively involved in the organization. I jumped in to help with the website, which led to serving on the Board. I was involved in the Ante Up for Spina Bifida tournaments, Holiday Parties and other events. I also served as Vice Chair of the Board for the past two years. With the new year, we have had some exciting changes to the Board. We have added 5 new members, bringing the total up to 17 people. Let me introduce you to your 2012 Board. Our Executive Board is made up of: The other Board members are: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jason Duncan - Chair Ryan McCoy – Immediate Past Chair Jana Hardwick – Vice Chair Gaye Morrison – Treasurer Gaby Cantu – Secretary Joanne Hurtekant – At Large Maria Avitia Joanne Cafiero Julie Carter Wendy Harvey Erin Cano Natasha Anderson Sasha Burrowes (New) Erik Meintser (New) Jon Vandiver (New) Beth Wynn (New) Rita Selene (Returning) With this great group of Board members and our wonderful Executive Director, Robin Lee, and intern, Sarah Harig, I am extremely excited about 2012. It is going to be a great year with lots of events on the horizon. They are short term commitments to help plan the events. Some of the committees include the BowlA-Thon, Walk-N-Roll, Ante Up and Holiday Party. If you are interested in serving on a committee, please contact myself or Robin Lee at (rlee@spinabifidant.org). I look forward to serving and working with you. Jason Duncan 3 F A L L F A M I LY C A M P It was a great year at Fall Family Camp!! We had 24 families in attendance, including 8 new families, for a grand total of 111 attendees. After campers arrived Friday night, they had a Carnival Party, which included activities such as an “ice-breaker” session, fun games, snow cones, face painting and air hockey. This was a great way for families to get to know one another before the organized activities began on Saturday. Saturday was fun filled with a packed schedule! Elaine Ekmark, from Scottish Rite, came and spoke to families about bowel programs for our educational session. She was extremely informative and provided a wealth of information for many of our “new” parents. During the day, campers enjoyed activities including the ropes course, star lab, arts & crafts, fishing and more! Saturday ended around the “campfire” with songs and Oven baked S’mores. No one even minded that there wasn’t a fire (due to the burn ban) – they were just excited to sing and eat those S’mores! On Sunday, families enjoyed brunch followed by a Graduation ceremony. Campers that have reached the age of 8 that allows them to attend Camp TLC will “graduate” from Family Camp. Our graduates this year all received a certificate stating the number of years they have attended Family Camp, as well as a special mini-Maglite flashlight engraved with their name and Camp TLC. Now they are ready for Camp TLC! All in all, it was the best Family Camp ever! 4 H O L I D AY P A R T Y THANK YOU TO OUR HOLIDAY PARTY SPONSORS AND SUPPORTERS! WE APPRECIATE YOU! Thank You! 7 SPOTLIGHT Why does SBANT support our scholarship program? Why should you support our scholarship program? Because of individuals like George. George Turner, an individual with Spina Bifida, has won several scholarships from SBANT over the past few years. He keeps us posted on what he is doing in college and what accomplishments that he has had. Read his latest letter below. He is truly an AMAZING individual, furthering the mission of SBANT and fighting for disability rights for all. In 2011, he organized the first Disability Awareness Event at the University of Arkansas. He was recently honored by the University's Chancellor for his work and attended the Cotton Bowl Reception. See his picture below as he meets Jerry Jones! Read more about George in our new Spotlight section on the website! We are proud that he is a part of SBANT! Hi Ms. Lee, I'm just writing to see how you've been and, because of your sincere interest and support last year, to give you an update regarding all the amazing things that have been happening for my program her at the University of Arkansas since last year! After Disabilities Awareness Week ended last April, I received an email from the HR Department of JB Hunt. They asked if we could partner with them for the next year's program! JB Hunt, as it turns out, was just one of many partners in a program called Bridges to Business, a program designed to help students with disabilities transition into the work world. So far, partners of Bridges to Business that I have learned of include J.B. Hunt, Tyson Foods, Walmart, Sam's Club, P & G and Kraft Foods. We are currently coordinating a career fair with our Student Government and Bridges to Business as one of our new initiatives this year in addition to our original scheduled events (The Relays, The Guest Speaker event, and the Luncheon, at which we present our progress to newspaper and tv media. The luncheon also gives us a chance to thank our partners. This year's luncheon will be sponsored by JB Hunt and Tyson) from last year. We are also working with our Student Government to enact an initiative in which student volunteers deliver food to students who are unable to make the trip to dining halls due to poor weather. Having been stuck in my dorm because of snow, this initiative means a lot to me! Finally, our program will be hosting a competition for engineer majors in which teams of 5 compete to create something that fulfills a need for the disabled. I will be making trips around Dallas during our winter break to raise funds to support this year's events. Thank you for all your support! Thank you, George Turner 8 2012 SCHOLARSHIPS SPINA BIFIDA ASSOCIATION OF NORTH TEXAS SCHOLARSHIP FUND AND DR. 12 UPCOMING EVENTS Let's go fishing - rain, snow or shine - at the Lewisville Fishing Barge! Chance to win DOOR PRIZES!! Help Make a Difference, with a few minutes of your time The Spina Bifida Genetics Research Project is starting the second phase of a study to determine if genetic variations in folic acid metabolism account for an increased risk of having a child affected by Spina Bifida. From the results of the study, it may be possible to develop a test that can identify women who may not be adequately protected by standard prenatal vitamins, but who might benefit from high dose folic acid therapy prior to conception. We are seeking mothers who have had children with Spina Bifida, and who did not participate in the first phase of this study, which was conducted in 2009-2010. We are also enrolling mothers of children who have not had children affected by Spina Bifida to serve as controls for the analysis. Participants in the study are asked to complete a brief online survey and provide a DNA sample using a simple, at-home saliva collection kit that is delivered and returned by mail. For more information and to enroll in the Spina Bifida Genetics Research Project, please go to the website at www.sbgenetics.org and select ENROLL. The website and survey are available in both English and Spanish. Upon completion, participants may choose to receive a $10 gift card or we will donate $10 to a spina bifida organization of your choice.
