Praxis I & II: Overview
Praxis I : Overview
Exams: Praxis I consists of three Core Academic Skills for
Educators tests, including Reading, Writing, & Math.
The Reading test has 56 selected-response questions which
assess: (1) key ideas & details; (2) craft, structure, & language
skills; and (3) integration of knowledge & ideas.
The Writing test has 40 selected-response items and two
essay questions, both of which address: (1) text types, purposes, & production; and (2) language & research skills for
writing.
The Math test has 56 selected-response items, which address
the following areas: (1) number & operations, (2) Algebra, (3)
Geometry, (4) measurement, (5) data analysis, and (6)
probability. An on-screen four function calculator is provided
for the exam. For additional information, please refer to the
ETS website (see the Resource section for links).
Timeline. You must take and pass all three Praxis I exams
prior to earning full SARTE status, or enrolling in courses that
require full SARTE status (e.g. EPSY 315). For additional information, please refer to the General Catalogue and Student
Handbook.
Exemptions. If you have a composite ACT score of 22 or
higher, or a combined SAT score of 1030 or higher, you are
exempt from taking the PRAXIS I exams in Reading, Writing, &
Math. Please see the Student Handbook for details.
Praxis II: Overview
Exams: To fulfill the Praxis II requirements, you will need to
take both the Principles of Learning & Teaching (PLT), and
one or more Content Knowledge exams.
The PLT has an exam for each of the following: (1) Early Childhood, (2) Elementary, (3) Middle Grades, and (4)Secondary. To
determine which exam you will need to take, refer to the ETS
website (see the Resource section for links).
All exams have 70 multiple choice questions and four constructed response essays, which address the following categories: (1) students as learners; (2) instructional processes; (3)
assessment; and (4) professional development, leadership, &
community.

Timeline. You will not be allowed to begin student teaching until
you have earned a passing score on all required Praxis II examinations. Details concerning testing deadlines are available
through the Office of Student Teaching.
Praxis I & II: Additional Information
Registration. Each time you register for a test, you will have
to pay between $85 and $150. Thus, to avoid unnecessary fees,
register for an exam only if you have had adequate time to
prepare. Nonetheless, if you take a test and do not earn a passing score, you can register to re-take that exam in subsequent
testing windows. For details on registration and scores, please
