Manufacturing’s Half Century
Club Inducts New Members
On May 18, the Manufacturing Division’s Half Century Club held a luncheon to
induct three new members into its prestigious club of long-service shipbuilders
with 50 or more years of continuous service to Newport News Shipbuilding
(NNS). During the event, Manufacturing leadership and Half Century Club
members reminisced about the inductees’ past shipyard experiences and shared
knowledge gained through their long-service careers at NNS. Following the
luncheon, new inductees Edsel “Red” Hall (X10), Lloyd D. Joyner (X54) and
Pernell Newby (X36) were presented with a special plaque. With the addition of
this year’s inductees, the Half Century Club currently has eight members.
“I am honored to be here with each of you today,” said Becky Stewart, vice
president of Manufacturing. “It is shipbuilders like you that serve as the
foundation of this shipyard. Thank you for your lifetime commitment to NNS.”

NNS Shipbuilders Celebrate
Flag Day
Shipbuilders around the yard took
time to celebrate Flag Day on June
14 by hanging American flags around
their work stations and office areas.
In addition to displaying flags in their
office cubicles, K93 shipbuilders
also hung a large American flag on
their office wall to serve as a friendly
reminder for the holiday and the
meaning behind the celebration.
“We display the American flag
proudly every day, but on June 14 as
Americans we show our love, respect
and honor it deserves,” said Neal
Jones (K93). “My favorite actor John
Wayne captures my thoughts best,
‘sure I wave the American flag. Do
you know of a better flag to wave?’”
NNS shipbuilders celebrate Flag Day. First row (L to R): Ricky Atkins (O39), Rebecca Sorensen (O39), Eddie
Richards (O39), Vicki Carroll (O39), and Neal Jones (K93). Second row (L to R): Billy Inge (K93), Jerry Phelps
(O39), Randy Kimrey (O39), Ramond West (X82), Robert Bucklew (O39), Geoffrey Wilson (O39), and Velvet
Silver (K93). Third row (L to R): Travarus Horton (K93), Jack Adam (K93), and Michael Shook (O39). Photo by

CFA Benchmarking Success
Shipbuilders in the Sheet Metal Shop hosted Earl Industries on Feb. 2 to
conduct a sheet metal benchmarking session. Benchmarking has been used in
the Component Fabrication and Assembly (CFA) Sheet Metal Shop to learn
how Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) and subcontractors can collaborate
to improve sheet metal deliveries, improvement opportunities and share best
practices.
“I feel strongly that the benchmarking relationship between Earl Industries and
the Electrical, Sheet Metal, Hanger, and Pad shops (ESHP) has been beneficial
to both companies,” said Scott Payne (O06). “It has been great sharing our
experiences and learning from each other. I look for this relationship to assist
both companies in the future.”
Diakun Appointed to VP of Energy Programs
Peter Diakun, vice president and chief technology officer
of Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), has been named
vice president of Energy Programs. In this role, he will also
become the general manager of Newport News Nuclear,
Inc. (NNN) as well as president of Newport News Industrial
Corp. (NNI) and Newport News Energy (NNE). Keeping
some responsibility from his former position, Diakun will
continue to oversee Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and
Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC) operations.
“Pete’s experience and leadership will be of great benefit to the company and
to our energy programs as we continue growth efforts in this area,” said NNS
President Matt Mulherin.
Leaders from Earl Industries meet with CFA leadership
in February during a benchmarking session.
CYBER T.I.P.S.
What is Cyber Security?
Cyber security involves protecting
information by preventing, detecting
and responding to attacks.
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee
that even with the best precautions
attacks will not occur, but there
are steps to minimize the chances
(Source: SANS).
The next Cyber T.I.P.S. will provide
info on how to recognize and protect
computers from cyber attacks.
