Letter from the President
This letter is a very difficult one to write as I share good news of accomplishments from the hard work and dedication of
our committees, coupled with sad news that our chapter has received during the last few months.
During the first quarter of our fiscal year, the chapter hosted an array of events geared toward providing educational value
and networking opportunities to our members. These events have proven to bring significant value to our members thus
resulting in membership growth, retention and most importantly involvement! Kudos to each and every single person who
has been involved in each event and making it a success!
Additionally, our committees have been extremely busy planning more opportunities for the remainder of the year. A
wonderful combination of educational and social events has been scheduled including two excellent educational programs,
a new member orientation and to cool off and kickback, a social networking event. Please make sure to attend these events
and continue to get involved. There are still plenty of opportunities to do so as several of our committees are continuing to
recruit for volunteers. Please contact Joanna Hoffschneider, Volunteer Coordinator, who will help you get connected with
the committee that is right for you! Remember, we cannot be successful without your involvement.
We are also pleased to announce the date for the 2012 Corporate Real Estate Awards of Excellence Gala! The event will be
held on Thursday, October 18th at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC. We want to thank Scott McMillan,
Division Chief-Facilities, for allowing us the opportunity to use this facility for our Gala. We are now accepting nominations
for the following award categories: Corporate Real Estate Leadership; Service Provider Leadership; Sustainability Leadership;
and Best New Workplace Solution. Submissions are due August 31, 2012. Click here to download the nomination package.
It is with our deepest sympathies that we share with you the news of two losses in our chapter. On July 9th, Kevin Dunn
passed away suddenly. Kevin, who worked for Haworth, was an engaged member of CoreNet volunteering his time on
our Special Events Committee, most notably on our annual golf outing. Kevin’s enthusiasm and positive attitude will be
remembered by all who knew him and will be extremely missed. Additionally, on July 24th JoAnn Lane, a board member
and good friend, lost her husband, Louis Henry “Bubba” Lane. I cannot find the right words to express to JoAnn’s and
Kevin’s families how deeply sorry we are about their loss. I hope that they find strength in the memories their loved ones
left behind as they begin this journey in finding comfort and strength. With time, these memories will forever bring them
joy and peace when they will need it the most.
As indicated in my last letter, we as a chapter are continually striving to bring value to our members by supporting,
educating and promoting the real estate executive. In September, we are planning a mid-year review to see how we’re doing
against the strategy set forth earlier in the year. The Board of Directors will meet to measure the accomplishments, and
begin the planning process on how we can continue to make your membership worthwhile.
Since announcing the new BOD on April 1st, there has been a change on the Executive Committee. We are pleased to
announce that Deane Edelman will return to our Executive Committee. Deane will serve as the Vice-President for the
chapter and will assume the role of President in April 2013. Deane previously served as President of the chapter from July,
2007 through December, 2008 where he brought strong leadership and made several positive changes that remain in place
today. Since that time he has worked in various capacities on the Finance Committee and the Advisory Committee helping
to transition new leadership teams. Deane is the Director
of Real Estate with General Dynamics Information
Sincerely,
Technology and we are happy to have him back.
Welcome back Deane!
As the summer winds down, we are gearing up for all of
the exciting activities planned for the rest of the year. So
enjoy the rest of your summer and plan to come out and
see us at an event soon!

Real Estate Professionals Learn the
Latest Technology Tools
On June 13th approximately 50 Mid-Atlantic Chapter members
and guests gathered at the Tower Club in Vienna, VA to hear
from industry leaders including: Derrick Millard with Geico; Jim
Barlow with Accenture; and Paul Himes with Himes Associates,
Ltd. as they discussed one of the hottest topics in business today:
Technology Tools. As the number – and sophistication – of
applications and system offerings has grown, the process of
evaluating and deploying these tools has become increasingly
difficult across Corporate Real Estate. During the presentation,
Reed Stvan with Fox RPM Corp. lead the group of panelist as they
discussed the various options that are available and how they can
be leveraged to streamline processes and reporting and increased
CRE efficiencies. We’d like to extend a special “thank you” to Al
Nielsen with AOL, Katrina Reid with IA Interior Architects, and
everyone else on the Mid-Atlantic Chapter Education Committee
for putting together such a dynamic and informative program!

Philanthropy in Corporate Real Estate
On May 23, Members came together at Genworth Financial
in Richmond, VA to examine how today’s culture demands
that its industry leaders be good corporate citizens. The
Chapter’s Education Committee hosted the event that asked
them to think about how Corporate Real Estate can play
a role in philanthropic endeavors and achieve meaningful
impact for not only the bottom line of its clients, but also for
the betterment of the community. As a case study, Sarah P.
Bagby, Domestic Real Estate Leader and Cindy J. Heidel, Sr.
Real Estate Counsel, Investments with Genworth Financial,
Inc. discussed the company’s opportunistic acquisition of the
Ramada Hotel Property in Richmond.

Capacity Crowd Learns About Campbell Soup Headquarters Renovation
The July 12 educational program, hosted by the Campbell
Soup Company in Camden, NJ, was organized by the
CoreNet Global Greater Philadelphia Chapter and
included participation from both the Mid-Atlantic
and New Jersey Chapters. The event brought in more
than 100 registrants and was divided into four program
segments including the Camden turn around; the process
to transform the headquarters; Campbell’s long history
of working with the City and continued commitment
to the area; and a tour of the headquarters. During the
presentation, speakers described the methodical process
undertaken to transform Campbell’s headquarters.
Design objectives reflected Campbell’s desire to support
innovative work place practices, foster greater employee
collaboration, rejuvenate corporate image, and improve
employee meeting and common areas. The new Employee
Center includes the new Campbell’s Café which showcases the company’s commitments to provide tasteful and nutritious food
products. The event was capped off with networking in the Campbell Café. We would like to thank the Campbell Company along with
all of the individuals who gave their time to help organize and participate in the event.

Sold Out ERS Takes Boston By Storm
The 2012 ERS was a highly successful event, attracting 348
registrants from the seven eastern chapters of CoreNet
Global; nearly matching the record attendance in New York
City in 2011. The theme, “Transformation and Innovation,”
addressed how innovation in thinking and practice occurs
and how these innovations can be applied to challenges
facing corporate real estate practitioners. Driving innovation
to solve ever more complex business problems is a critical
capability for companies seeking to thrive in a time of slow
motion recovery and intensifying global competition.
Programming was expanded this year with two additional
sessions taking place on Monday morning. The first focused
on CoreNet Global’s ground breaking report, “Corporate
Real Estate 2020” and the second was the Young Leaders
Forum. There was also a morning tour “Boston Innovation
District by Boat” and two early afternoon tours. The soldout afternoon tours featured a “Fenway Park Centennial”
tour lead by John Rosenthal, a leader of the redevelopment
of Boston’s Fenway neighborhood, and a “Heart of BioTech/ East Cambridge” tour.

Tuesday offered a full day of break out sessions that
were all highly rated. Some of the topics covered were:
Success Strategies for Leaders in New Roles, Going
Global, Changing Corporate Procurement Practices and
several others. The afternoon general session entitled,
“Transformational Cities” featured author Roberta Gratz,
Michael Buckley, President, Haycon and Director University
of Texas Center for Metropolitan Density and Certification
Program in Turnaround Strategy, and Frederick Kramer,
AIA, President of ADD, Inc. Daniel Fishbein, ERS CoChair, moderated the program. A survey of ERS attendees
revealed an outstanding response to the programming.
The 2012 ERS concluded at the Queen’s Head Pub late
Tuesday afternoon in Harvard University’s historic and
architecturally significant Memorial Hall. Thanks go to the 48
volunteers from the seven chapters who put together the ERS
with the assistance of Association & Conference Group.
On Monday afternoon Chris Horblit, President of Fidelity
Real Estate Company welcomed attendees as President of
the New England Chapter. His remarks were followed by
