Corporate Responsibility Report - Ireland 2013

1

A message from our CEO

2

Since 2008, we have focused on developing a long-term, dedicated

Corporate

Responsibility

Programme. By utilising our skills and knowledge base in the areas of Environmental

Services, Health & Wellness,

Energy Management and Quality and Safety, we have driven environmental awareness and the importance of community involvement across our 980 locations.

In relation to our community involvement, we were delighted to have hosted our third Aramark

Building Community day with over

100 volunteers taking the time to transform Ballyfermot Resource

Centre in Dublin.

We continue to support our nominated charities thanks to the involvement of our 4,000 strong workforce located across Ireland,

UK & EMEA. As a result our fundraised total continues to rise and by the end of 2013 had reached

€273,000.

In 2013, our focus on Health &

Wellness through our Right Track programme has evolved and continues to be a key driver for the success of our business in relation to our employee engagement and performance.

Through our Food Services division, we serve 250,000 meals per day and are committed to promoting healthy food choices across our restaurants and retail operations.

Our communication and awareness programme is endorsed by our

Health & Wellness ambassador,

Olympic gold medalist – Katie Taylor and we pride ourselves on aligning with such a strong role model for us all.

Our Corporate Responsibility initiatives continue to be devised by our Head of Corporate

Responsibility Iris Wade, supported by our Star Team members across the country.

This year’s report is aimed to provide a high level overview of our activity for 2013 and we look forward to further development of our programme into 2014 and beyond.

Health & Wellness

Every day, Aramark Food

Services serves more than

250,000 meals to customers around Ireland, recognising diverse variations in tastes and dietary restrictions.

We prepare and serve food in colleges, sports & entertainment locations, businesses, healthcare institutions and other settings around the country.

We serve almost all age groups, from all walks of life, from meals for college students, doctors, nurses and hospital patients; office workers, residents of nursing homes; and even workers living on off-shore oil rigs.

While most traditional restaurants see their customers once or twice a month, many of our customers dine with us five or six times a week, often several times a day.

Because we provide meals to so many people, we know we can play an important role in helping to build a healthier society at a time when the need for nutrition-related chronic disease prevention is greater than ever. In Ireland, 39% of Irish Adults are overweight and 18% are obese. There are over

300,000 obese children in Ireland and 20% of 9 year olds considered overweight.

Our Right Track programme is our commitment to improving health and wellness, recognising and addressing these important issues. It is our approach to health and wellness that features healthy food, nutrition education, and wellness programs that work together to support healthy lifestyles and is endorsed by our Right Track Ambassador, Olympic Gold

Medalist, Katie Taylor.

Our Right Track approach means we are finding more and more ways to proactively provide choices, information and programmes that can help people make healthier decisions and live healthier lives.

Right Track Roadshow

Throughout the year, we launched our Right Track programme across many of our Food Services sites.

In addition we hosted a series of question and answer sessions with Katie Taylor, giving customers and clients an opportunity to not only meet with Katie but ask her advice and guidance on health and wellness issues.

Health & Wellness

Health E

In 2013, our healthcare division, Aramark Healthcare launched our Health-E campaign, a health and wellness programme aimed at creating awareness of healthy eating and work life balance for employees in the Healthcare Sector.

Health-E, part of Aramark’s national Right Track health and wellness programme was unveiled as part of a series of week-long events to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle and encourage positive food choices.

Nutrition continues to be instrumental in the success of a balanced health and wellness approach and we believe it is important to create awareness around the impact of what you put in to your body can affect your wellness approach.

We provide our customers with practical information on how they can make healthy choices, particularly when many people may eat their main meal at work within the Healthcare sector.

Community Involvement

Community involvement, volunteerism and disaster response have been part of our company throughout its history. Like many leading companies, we have taken considerable steps to redefine our community involvement strategy. We’ve evolved from a more traditional strictly philanthropic approach to a comprehensive strategy that best maximises our expertise, investment and impact.

More and more people are turning to non-profit community organisations for help, yet these same organisations are struggling with reduced financial support.

Community Involvement

Through the Aramark Ireland Charitable Fund and our volunteer and philanthropic programme Aramark

Building Community, we engage with relevant community organisations to learn, share and refine practices that help address the most critical social issues

In addition, we support our clients and employees in their community efforts whenever possible, supporting their philanthropic goals and objectives.

We are developing deeper relationships with more relevant organisations and finding ways to mobilise a workforce that is increasingly interested in being involved in their communities.

Aramark Nominated Charities 2013

Aramark Ireland selected its nominated charities for 2013. They were:

Console – Western Region

Bodywhys – Eastern Region

Red Branch – Southern Region

Chest, Heart Stroke – Northern Region

Each year, Aramark Ireland employees are asked to nominate charities from their local area which they feel are in need of Aramark’s support. Four charities are selected from those nominated to represent each province.

Our Corporate Responsibility programme allows our own colleagues select the charities, this means that they can really identify and support the charity for their region, benefiting the local community.

Community Involvement

This year’s charities represent some of the key issues we are focusing on as an organisation in line with our

Health & Wellness Right Track programme.

Paul Kelly, CEO & Founder of Console said,

“Console is delighted to have been chosen as one of Aramark’s nominated charities for 2013. This will undoubtedly help us sustain free suicide prevention and bereavement services, from our Galway and Mayo bases in particular.

Aramark staff will be playing their important part in raising much-needed funds, but also in raising awareness of Console and reducing the stigma associated with suicide in Ireland”.

Community Involvement

Star Teams & Recognition

Our Star Teams are a group of field based colleagues that work as volunteers leading our fundraising initiatives across the country. This year, one of our Star

Team colleagues was recognised globally for her work with our nominated charity Bodywhys.

Nicola Paul’s commitment to community involvement led to her award as the Outstanding Volunteer for

2013. Nicola volunteers several evenings a month for the Bodywhys helpline and said she’s learned that it is very much a mental health issue – and with her food service and healthcare background, she felt very motivated to work with Bodywhys to help people who suffer from the disorder.

Skydive for Charity

Six Aramark employees took to the skies with Skydive

Ireland for a charity sky dive in an effort to raise funds for the companies nominated charities. The employees jumped 8,000ft to raise funds and the skydive team has raised over €5,000.

The intrepid skydiving team included:

• Deirdre Croker, Aramark Property from Dublin

• Iris Wade, PR & CSR from Rush , Dublin

• Niall Moloney, Company Dietician from

Claremorris, Mayo

• Lauren Murphy, Aramark Property from Dublin

• Sonia Fallon, Aramark Property from Dublin

Aramark Building Community 2013

A team of over 100 Aramark employees rolled up their sleeves, donating their time, energy and expertise to help Ballyfermot Family Resource Centre create an

Aramark Building Community (ABC) Opportunity Zone focused on workforce readiness to help youth and adults prepare for jobs and obtain employment.

This event kicked off a new partnership between the company and Ballyfermot, which provides integrated support and services to isolated and struggling families, and hosts local support groups and return-towork programs.

Aramark organised the day’s event as part of

Aramark Building Community, the company’s strategic philanthropic and volunteer program. Through ABC,

Aramark partners with community centres to help prepare adults and teens for work, improve family health and help move people children, adults and families from poverty to success.

Volunteers transformed under-utilised rooms into an inspiring and efficient workforce readiness resource area that includes training space for job development workshops and programs, and offices for youth and adults to practice interview skills.

The Aramark team also enhanced the centre’s café, which doubles as a hospitality and culinary job training programme.

Community Involvement

Other parts of the facility were enhanced to create an even more welcoming environment for the community.

An outdoor seating and dining area was created adjacent to the café, and volunteers landscaped and enhanced the crèche play space for young children.

In addition, Aramark launched a return-to-work programme for users of the centre to help people reduce the barriers they face in getting and keeping good jobs.

Joe Fitzgerald, Chairperson, Ballyfermot Resource

Centre added, “We support all aspects of the local community from our crèche to menni services to supporting people looking to get back into the workforce. Generally speaking, users who avail of our services in Ballyfermot require a level of support in their day to day lives. Aramark is helping to support our aims and the greater community with its skills enhancement and we welcome this partnership and the support shown here today.”

Environmental Stewardship

Environmental Stewardship

As a company that not only operates its own facilities, but also manages a variety of other services at numerous client locations, Aramark has a dual responsibility to integrate environmental sustainability practices at both company-owned and client locations around the world. We work to improve our own environmental practices, while offering expertise and practical solutions to our clients to help them reach their environmental goals and enable efficient operations.

At our own facilities, we implement programmes to minimise our environmental impact in many ways

-- from reducing energy and water use to employing alternative energy vehicles within our service fleet or reducing food waste.

Many seek environmentally responsible products and services at home, at work and throughout their daily lives. We have seen that this demand continues and even grows, even in times of economic challenges.

We identify practical environmental solutions that are broadly attainable within the company-client relationship. Through these relationships we work collaboratively on issues such as sustainable menu and product selections, while taking into account our clients’ needs and budgets.

As we guide our clients through the environmental programmes we can offer, we also modify, expand and improve our initiatives to meet their needs as the interest in more environmentally friendly practices increases.

Millions of consumers including employees, students, visitors, and patients who are our customers inform our decisions about improvements to environmental practices associated with products and services.

Celebrate Irish Food

Local sourcing of food not only contributes positively to local economies, it also reduces impacts to the environment. Aramark Ireland is making a concerted effort to use more locally sourced Irish produce in the meals it serves to more than a quarter of a million people each day throughout the country.

Sustainability Facilities Management

Aramark sponsored a BIFM conference on sustainability – an event that raised the issue of sustainability for the facilities management industry.

Employee Advocacy

Employee Advocacy

With a diverse workforce of almost 4,000, as an organisation our employees deliver our core services through thousands of human interactions. Our employees’ exceptional expertise and service are the most important piece of our business model. Treating employees fairly, honestly and with respect is a core value and has a direct impact on the performance and sustainability of our company.

Professional development opportunities and pathways that promote career advancement are also key factors in employee satisfaction. Aramark’s scale allows us to present global job and growth opportunities to our employees that begin with those entering the workforce and continue all the way through senior management. Every year we invest in training and personal development for our employees.

Creating an environment where employees are engaged and satisfied in their jobs is important to us. Research shows that engaged employees feel positive, do a better job, and stay longer with their company than less engaged employees. At a minimum, companies should provide competitive wages and benefits, and a safe work environment.

We recognise that the emerging “next generation workforce” is looking for companies that are socially responsible and that allow employees to thoughtfully connect to relevant social issues and causes. Success in engaging these young professionals is one of the greatest opportunities that large employers like

Aramark encounter today.
