Lord of the Flies Culmination
A philosopher’s view of D.H. Lawrence’s “Snake” and the novel!
World Literature and Analysis - February 26, 2014!
!
Your Task!
As you read and annotate “Snake” by D.H. Lawrence, you should see some noteworthy
similarities between the poem and the novel. Furthermore, you should be thinking about
what the philosophers covered would say about each portion. What message do you feel
Lawrence is trying to convey? !
Your Essay!
You need to formulate a thesis that establishes a clear and concrete correlation between
the poem, the novel, and one of the philosophers we have discussed. The novel and the poem
should serve as the backdrop for the essay. You must use
concrete references to both the lines of the poem and the
novel that support your claim. Your chosen philosopher’s
perspective should be echoed throughout the essay. You
will have to do additional research to utilize the
philosopher’s own words. Additionally, when discussing
both the poem and the novel, you need to be making
references to Lawrence and Golding’s use of literary
techniques and elements, such as symbolism, metaphor (extended and regular), imagery,
foreshadowing, suspense, or allusion. By emphasizing the author’s choices and purpose in
using these techniques and elements, you will better be able to portray authorial intent.!
Steps for the Essay!
Annotate “Snake.”!
After Tuesday’s keynote, decide on the philosopher who most interests you, or who
you feel would have the most to say about the novel and the poem.!
Do additional research on your chosen philosopher, selecting quotations that you
feel help to better portray his perspective. Be sure that every time you copy and paste a
quotation, you create a citation for the quote by using easybib or bibme. !
Write a tentative thesis for your essay.!
