1. What does the acronym “YMCA” stand for?
2. What prompted you to apply for a camp counselor position, and why do you feel you are qualified?
3. At the YMCA, our core values are Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Describe how you might integrate
one or more of these values into one of your camp activities.
4. This summer, we will have individually themed weeks such as “Under the Sea,” “Jurassic Park,” and “Space.” Plan/describe (a) games and activities (b) a field trip, and (c) a special event that corresponds with one of the weeks listed.

5. While you are outside on the playground with the camp kids, you see another staff member on their cell phone instead of watching/interacting with the kids. How do you handle it?

6. You witness two children interacting and it appears that one child may be teasing/bullying another child. What steps
do you take to stop the current situation and prevent further instances?
7. Your group is on a field trip that involves an hour of outdoor play time when the weather turns and it begins to rain.
You will be stuck inside of the rest of the trip. What ideas do you have to help you entertain your group?
8. One of your campers is misbehaving and refusing to take part in the group activity. What should you do?

Thank you for your interest in joining our team for an exciting summer at the YMCA! The position you are applying for
is very important. Please pay close attention to the following information. If you fail to complete any one step, you will
no longer be considered for a position.
MANDATORY: for all staff

Commitment to an entire summer (11 weeks) of fun and learning

Attendance at an invite-only panel interview and audition (Stuart & PSL only)
✔
All Camp and Branch Specific Trainings (paid at a wage of $8.05/hr.)
✔
First Aid and CPR certification for which YOU are financially responsible and required to have prior to camp (no wages available).
EXTRA MANDATES: for all Lifeguards (Richard C. Geisinger Branch & Louis Dreyfus Citrus Branch only)
✔
Ellis lifeguard certification ($150) for which you are financially responsible (no wages available, classes offered at the main Y branch).
Your role this summer will be a demanding one. Your No. 1 responsibility will be to the campers in your group and their

KEY DATES AND INFORMATION
➽ First day of camp for Stuart & SportsWorld is Wednesday, June 3rd. First day of camp for St. Lucie, Indiantown, &
Okeechobee sites is Monday, June 8th. Last day of camp for Martin County is Friday, August 21st. Last day of camp for
St. Lucie County is (tentative) Friday, August 21st.
➽ All applicants are considered for general camps. If you have a special talent such as fishing, gymnastics, or surf
skills, and would like to be considered for a specialty camp, please let us know.
➽ If you are selected to interview, you will be contacted. Individual panel interviews for Stuart camps and lifeguards
will be at the Richard C. Geisinger Branch from Wednesday, May 6, to Friday, May 8, from 1pm to 6pm. Following the
panel interviews, selected candidates will be invited to a group audition on Tuesday, May 12, from 4pm to 6pm. Interviews for St. Lucie County, Indiantown, and Okeechobee Camps will be set up on an individual basis.
➽ All Camp Training at the Richard C. Geisinger Branch in Stuart is on Saturday, May 16. from 8am to 4pm.
➽ You will be notified of the dates for your branch-specific training by your supervisor.
➽ CPR and First Aid classes are available to Y staff for $60 (good for 2 years). Re-certifications are $30 per component. Pre-registration is required. You may elect to get these certifications elsewhere.
➽ YMCA class dates and times are as follows:
Richard C. Geisinger Branch: May 18 & 20 (M & W, 5-9pm), May 26 & 28 (T & Th, 5-9pm),
May 27 & 29 (T & TH, 5-9pm), June 6 (Sat, 9am-5pm).
Ellis Lifeguard Certification is available at the Y. To gain this certification, you are required to attend
ALL 3 days from May 29 to 31. Friday class is 4pm-9pm and Saturday/Sunday class is 8am-5pm.
