ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONS
BARUCH
Welcome to Manhattan Youth After-School Programs!
This program is funded by the Department of Youth and Community Services as a part of the city’s Comprehensive After-School
System (COMPASS) School’s Out NYC (SONYC). Please review activity descriptions and fill out the entire enrollment packet. Packets
can be mailed, faxed, e-mailed or hand delivered to Kim Waldon. We must receive a complete application before your child may
participate in our program. At the end of each trimester, students will be able to enroll in different clubs and winter sports teams.
Please read your weekly emails for updates about the program.
ART SMART: Join our club as we take art to a new level! Here,
students will combine science and art as they experiment with
paint, oil pastels, textiles, clay, charcoal, ink and glue.
CERAMICS: Learn to work with clay! Students will get to design
and create their own pieces of art while learning about form
and function.
ART PORTFOLIO: Interested in continuing to pursuing art in
high school? Join Art Portfolio Clun to prepare your visual art in
compliance with the application process to an arts high school
or program. 8th grade students only!
CHESS CLUB: Checkmate! Chess club is open to beginners
through advanced players. Students are able to strengthen
their comprehension, ability, and enjoyment of the game in a
safe and fun environment. Students will learn fundamentals,
explore the game’s complexities, and prepare for serious
competition.
ADVANCED ORCHESTRA: From Beethoven to Stravinsky, we
will tackle works from some of the greatest composers in
history! Students will develop their musical abilities by
challenging themselves with some of the most famous
orchestral pieces ever written, and will perform for their peers
and the school community.
BASKETBALL CLINIC - Students will learn the basic skills of ball
handling, the rules of the game, building fitness and preparing
them for team play.
BARUCH DANCE TEAM: Led by a Broadway veteran, students
will explore dance technique through hip-hop, jazz and a
variety of cultural dances. Student’s will have the opportunity
to offer song and choreography suggestions! This club will have
a final performance at the Manhattan Youth & school talent
show.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT MONDAYS: What better way to learn the
answers to life’s important questions then through
experiments! Here students can perform hands on experiments
testing Newton’s laws of Physics, study the unseeable world
using a microscope, learn rocks and minerals and explore the
Human Body systems all in one fun academic club! Who ever
said you had to leave home to become an explorer!
CHORUS/ACAPELLA: Get ready to flex your pipes! This new
singing group will draw from a variety of popular and classic
music allowing students to harmonize with and without
accompaniment!
COED CODING: Want to be the next Steve Jobs? This club
allows students to be introduced to a variety of aspects of
computer science including graphic design and programming
such as Java & Scratch. All levels and skills welcomed!
COMIC BOOK CREATION: POW! Whether you are a comic book
enthusiast or an artist looking for a different medium, be blown
away with comic books! Create you own comic book either by
hand or digitally to the envy of all your friends!
COMPUTER ENGINEERING: Built by you from scratch! Whether
computers or phones, learn the inner workings from an expert.
All levels of students welcome!
CULINARY QUEST: Do you love to cook? Learn how to make
delicious food by experimenting with different scientific and
mathematical methods. The best part is that you get to eat it all
at the end of class!
BOOK CLUB: Ready, Set, Read! Share your love of literature
with your classmates as you create your own book club at
Baruch! Students will help to direct the focus of the group.
What’s YOUR favorite book?
DRAMA AUDITION PREP: With the help of theater
professionals, students will learn about the audition process,
identify monologues, rehearse, and prepare to apply to
performing arts high schools.
CAPOEIRA: Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art hidden
through song, music and dance. Learn from an instructor who
has studied under masters across Brazil, the U.S., and Europe!
EVENT PLANNING CLUB: Students plan their own monthly
events at the school based on certain theme. They learn the
fundamental concepts behind planning, including booking
entertainment, budgeting, food preparation and more.
FASHION CLUB: The runway awaits you! Here students will be
introduced to the art of fashion. Through intensive workshops,
students will design their own clothes, learn how to sew, work with
the theater department to develop ideas for the play and musicals,
put on fashion shows, and reach out to the amazing fashion
community throughout NYC.
FENCING CLUB: On Guard, ready Fence! Behind every success
story there is a history of hard work, perseverance, and
determination. Together Fencers set high goals and support
each other for the simple joy of learning. Here fencing will
promote the social and athletic interactions of members of the
team.
FILMMAKING CLUB: Get ready to create original films! Learn all
aspects of film making such as screenwriting, storyboarding,
location scouting, acting, directing, filming, post-production,
scoring, distribution and marketing.
FLOWER POWER: Learn the tricks and trades for making flower
arrangements for all kinds of special occasions. Help make your
school beautiful for events, and get in touch with your inner
“flower child!”
FORENSIC LAB: Students will investigate recreated “crime scenes,”
complete with police tape and physical evidence. The young sleuths
will use their deductive skills to deconstruct the “crimes.”
GIRLS CODING: Create your own video games and phone apps!
Girls ONLY design and program your own apps and video games
using coding and computer science. Learn important coding
concepts and participate in fun challenges. No previous
computer skills are necessary.
GLEE CLUB: Come and sing your heart out with all of the charttopping hits! Glee Club develops your musical voice as you
work on tone and range. All vocal skills welcomed! For our
more seasoned performers, there is also an advanced option!
GREEN TEAM: Do you care about the environment and want to
make the Baruch Community a greener place? Then you need
to join Green Team! We will work to build awareness of issues
and take action to improve the world around us.
HITMAKERS: Learn how to write and produce your own music!
Students will cover topics ranging from harmony, melody &
songwriting to sampling, recording, & beat making taught by a
professional producer and sound engineer. Throughout the
term, students will travel to world-class music studios and
other facilities related to music production. This club will have a
final performance at the school talent show in April.
JEWELRY MAKING: Conceive, design, and create your own
jewelry, handbags, and more fun and interactive class.
LEGO ROBOTICS: Introduces students to real-world engineering
challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on
a thematic playing surface. Teams will participate in citywide
competitions as part of the FIRST LEGO League.
LIVING ENVIRONMENT: Prep for the science of life and high
school application! Students will take a 9th grade level Living
Environments class, acting as an advanced placement science
course for high school! At the end of the year they will take the
Living Environments Regents Exam for credit.
MADE BY ME ART CLUB: DIY at its best! Here students will
learn to make cool crafts to take home like Lava Lamps soft
sculptures, mini monsters, Sculpey clay beads, friendship
bracelets, felting, Zines (small folded books), and much more.
MANDARIN CLUB: Nǐ xiǎng xué pǔtōnghuà? Join the Mandarin
Club to strengthen your conversational skills while learning
about all the different Chinese cultures. All skills levels
welcome!
MARTIAL ARTS/JIU JITSU: Leadership: Students will learn
combat and self-defense techniques while having fun and
staying active.
MOCK TRIAL: Students will research and gather evidence, as
well as prepare and deliver arguments in a mock trial format.
Students will also engage in discussion of historical and
contemporary criminal cases.
MODERN DANCE CLUB: Modern Dance focuses on a dancer’s
own interpretation instead of structured steps rejecting
limitations of classical dances styles in favor of movements
derived from the expression of your inner feelings. Here
students help to create comfortable class for all dance levels to
practice and improve upon their personal skills as a dancer.
MINIPRENEUR CLUB: Students learn to build their own
businesses, from concept to budget to execution and
implementation of a business plan. They will come up with a
creative product design, make a prototype, manufacture
multiple units of their product, develop marketing materials
and schedule school and community events that allow the sale
of their products to classmates, parents and community
members.
MIXED MEDIA MADNESS: A mixed media madness with a cool
twist. Students will learn soft sculpture, wood sculpture,
marbleized paper, water color design, collage, papier-mâché
and print making.
MURAL DESIGN & PUBLIC ART: This group of student artists
will be led through a series of large scale art projects including
massive murals, sculptures, paintings, and banners. These
projects will be displayed throughout Baruch and NYC.
PHOTOGRAPHY & DIGITAL MEDIA: Lights, Camera, Action!
Students will learn digital photography techniques, design and
layout skills. Learn how to take your photos to the next level of
professionalism using a variety of imaging software including
Photoshop.
RUNNING CLUB: Love to run? Then running club is the place for
you. Come explore the city with some outdoor exercise. Learn
how to make your techniques sharper while getting fit. All skill
levels welcome!
SCIENCE EXPLORERS: Students will journey through the
physical sciences, exploring the world inside and outside the
school, learning the physics and chemistry behind the
architectural structures, energy sources, waste management
and products that they interact with every day.
SCIENCE MEDLEY MONDAY: Calling all scientists! Here students
will explore all realms of science, examining the world in and
outside of school. Whether learning owl pellet dissections,
earthworm examinations and indoor composting, soap making
or chemistry nothing will be left unexplored!
SCIENCE OF SUPERHEROES: Utility Belt? Check. Super speed,
mega strength, flight, mutant powers, invisibility cloak? Check,
check. And what about the turbo suit, gadgets, and gizmos that
would make a physicist green with envy? Check. Check. Check.
A multi-media, activity based class examining a wide variety of
scientific concepts through the lens of some of the most world
renowned superheroes and super villains.
SILK SCREEN PRINTING: Learn how to screen print! This class
covers the fundamentals of silkscreen from screen prep to final
print, how to properly use screen printing equipment and tools,
and basic tips and tricks to print whatever your heart desires.
SMOOTHIE & MOVIE: Yes, you read that right. We’ll gather on
Fridays to make smoothies and watch movies.
SPANISH CLUB: ¿Quería hablar Español? Join the Spanish Club
to strengthen your conversational skills while learning about all
the different Spanish cultures. All skills levels welcome!

STEP: Rhythmical dance put into orchestrated polyrhythms
celebrating music in every movement of the body's multifaceted potential for rhythm. Students develop rhythm,
coordination, flexibility, imagination & self-confidence.
STUDY LAB: Study lab provides all students an opportunity to
work on homework in a quiet environment. Assistance is
available at all times.
TABLE TENNIS: Want to mega spin like Forest Gump? Table
tennis club will teach you the rules & skills to be an elite table
tennis player. All skill levels welcome!
TASTEY SCIENCE TUESDAY: What better way to combine
science then with food! Here students can create the science
and eat it too! Learn the science behind such yummy foods as
edible slime, instant slushy, Dippin Dots and Maple syrup
crystals. Come prepared to learn and eat!
THEATER: Role call for actors! Beginning with theater games,
improvisation and scene study, the theater program, will
culminate in two major productions each year. All students
who participate in the theater program will have roles in the
shows.
THIRST QUENCHING TUESDAY: How about quenching your
thirst with science? Students will create, eat and examine many
of the crazy fun science substances like Grape frizz, Frizzy-fruitorama, candy floss punch and watermelon grape frizz. Fun food
will never be the same again once you know the science behind
it!
VIDEO GAME DESIGN: Game on! Love computer games; want
to design your own? Then this club is the place for you.
Students will explore techniques for hands on game
development using some of today’s industry standard tools.
YEARBOOK: Join the Yearbook Club to help preserve all of the
great moments and memories that you’ll have this year!
Students will design, create, and publish the school yearbook
for the school community.
