Executive Director’s Message
Dear Supporters,
Last year was a very good year for our program. I'm not a big
"by the numbers" kind of person but we provided more services
to more clients and engaged more volunteers than the prior
year which is always a goal of mine. Corporate support for our
program is also growing again as everyone is working through
this new economic reality we now live in. In the past few years,
our programs have financially benefited from our local home
foreclosure issue through donated and discounted homes from
various banks which we repaired and improved and then sold to
first-time low-moderate homeowners. This allowed us to
stabilize our agency and actually grow. We started a new
program this year to build wooden handicap ramps for
low-income homeowners in mobile homes called The Arizona
Ramp Project which we already have received funding to pay for
materials and Corporate Teams are lining up to help us build
them. So all in all, our agency is in good shape going into a new
year. As we tell our volunteers, "You cannot do all the good our
community needs, but our community needs all the good you
can do" and we want to work with you to support your efforts.
We are not put on this earth to necessarily be successful but
rather to be significant and we hope by working on our projects,
helping our less fortunate neighbors, you will feel that you were
significant at least for that one client.
Thank you for your support.
Dennis Flynn, Executive Director
2012-2013 Programs
Child Help – October 2012 - Child Help is a single source stop for children overcoming abuse. By adding new
landscape, colorful planters, benches, and shading the front entrance was transformed from an institutional setting to a
welcoming building that alleviates children’s fears before they even enter!
DeColores – October 2012 - A transitional housing program for women and children overcoming domestic violence
received a renewed education center with shelving for their computer lab and library. In addition, to go with their name,
the campus benches and walls were painted with bright colors.
US Vets – November 2012 and February 2013 – US VETS is transforming a former motel into a permanent
Veteran housing community. RTVOS took several volunteer groups to US VETS to ensure this housing was attractive and
inviting to Veterans. The focus was on the community spaces, external landscaping, patriotic theme, and repairing the
community pool What a difference this center brings to Grand Avenue.
Girls Hope – December 2012 – This residential school program partners with families to provide a nurturing
environment for girls to focus on their education. The volunteers improved this home in central Phoenix by adding front
landscaping, provided a new community room, paint throughout, and artificial turf in the back yard.
Build a Block – February 2013 – worked with 150 Lowe’s employees to repair 5 homes, build a community garden
at Academia Del Pueblo, and install a playground with Carter’s Kids
Sullivan’s Place – June 2013 – with the Sears Heroes at Home grant an abandoned house in south Phoenix was
donated to Arizona OIC to provide housing for veterans going through job training .
Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun on the go!
• Choice Hotels National Conference – May 2013, for a National Partner’s Conference in Los Angeles.
RTVOS was asked to lead the special project for the Boys & Girls Club of East Los Angeles, California.
• Anniston Alabama – transformed a school for handicapped children by repairing a deck, fencing, and
landscaping
• Wichita, Kansas – led volunteers in repairing landscaping, playground areas, and housing
National Rebuilding Day and Month, April 2013
The theme for this year’s National Rebuilding Day was Community Garden in low-income neighborhood. Ten
organizations joined forces by combining their funding and volunteer labor to improve the quality of life in low-income
neighborhoods. Three neighborhoods received community gardens with National Rebuilding Day; South Central City,
Academia del Pueblo, and West Mesa. Each of the gardens provides a place for the community to gather, to grow food,
and work together.
Paint-a-thon, Make A Difference Day, Saturday, October 27, 2012
148 homes were painted by teams of volunteers committed to making a difference in the life of a low-income senior.
Due to the Paint-a-thon application process which serves the same population as the Fall Prevention Program, an increase
of 100 applications for grab bars came into Rebuilding Together offices August to October.
Senior Fall Prevention
The dedicated team of regular volunteers, installed home safety modifications at 334 homes, assisting a total of
500 people with an average annual household income of $19,304.
Arizona Ramp Project
Rebuilding Together launched a new service with the Fall Prevention program to build exterior ramps for people who
have ‘aged in place’. With teams of skilled leaders and other volunteers, ramps can be built and installed in
3-4 hours for low-income homeowners challenged by their exterior stairs. The program was developed and tested
with 3 ramp builds in 2013 and anticipate building 35 ramps in the following year.

“Now I can use my scooter and
go visit my daughter across the
street and take my dog on
walks. I didn’t think this would
ever happen, I didn’t know if I’d
ever get out of the house.”

“I’m a resident of this neighborhood.
And I really feel this is important
because this has not been a beautiful
neighborhood for a while. There’s
been a lot of bad things going on.
And I feel like this will just bring all
the beauty, and make us want better
and do better. So I just feel like this
could really help us out in a good
way.”
