Pre-Master’s Program (PMP)
The PMP is a one or two-semester
program designed for students who
have completed a bachelor’s degree but
need additional support to gain entry to
the UMass Lowell master’s program.
The PMP program helps to close the
gap in your academic or English skills,
and offers courses to fully prepare you
to be successful in your graduate
program, while also gaining credit
towards your graduate program in
the process.
When you are accepted into the PMP
you are also conditionally accepted into
the master’s program. As long as you
successfully complete the PMP
coursework and attain a GPA of 3.0 in
both your PMP and graduate courses
you will matriculate. You do not need
to make any other application and you
will only need one student
visa application.
You should take the GMAT or GRE
as early as possible as scores must be
reported two weeks prior to the end
of the semester. Test support will be
provided during the PMP semester.
During your PMP semester(s) you
will take Navitas courses plus UMass
Lowell graduate courses to prepare
you for your master’s program. The
Navitas courses have been carefully
chosen to ensure that you develop the
necessary skills to succeed in the
master’s program.

The Department of Chemistry at
UMass Lowell presently consists of 17
full-time faculty, including the President
of the University of Massachusetts
system, Dr. Robert Caret (an organic
chemist). The MS in Chemistry offers
both a non-thesis and thesis option.
In the thesis option students have the
ability to specialize in biochemistry,
analytical, inorganic, organic physical
chemistry, and polymer science.
Clinical Lab Sciences
The Clinical Laboratory Sciences
Master’s Degree Program is intended
for experienced professionals or new

Fine Arts, Humanities,
and Social Sciences
The College of Fine Arts, Humanities,
and Social Sciences offers students
opportunities to collaborate with
community leaders, participate in
research, build professional
relationships, and add to the depth
of their knowledge and expertise
through its Graduate Programs.
Community
Social Psychology
Although community social psychology
shares its historical roots with clinical
psychology, it is very different from the
traditional, one-on-one counseling
model that comes to mind when one
thinks of the field of clinical psychology.
Community social psychology aims to
go beyond the individual, focusing
instead on the community, environment,
and larger influencing factors that affect
people’s daily lives (culture, politics,
economics, healthcare, etc.). The field
of community social psychology is
devoted to advancing theory, research,
and collaborative social action (at
neighborhood, organizational, state,
national, and international levels) to
promote positive well-being, increase
empowerment, advance social justice,
encourage understanding of each other
and of issues that society faces, and to
prevent the development of problems.
Community Social Psychologists go
beyond an individual focus and
integrate social, cultural, economic,
political, environmental, and
international influences to promote
positive change, health, and
empowerment at individual and
systemic levels.
Criminal Justice
Established in 1984, the Criminal
Justice Master of Arts program has had
a long history of producing dedicated,
well rounded students who are in top
demand by federal, state, and local
agencies. With the dynamic nature of
criminal justice, more and more
employers are demanding greater levels
of academic achievement from their
employees. The School of Criminology
and Justice Studies at UMass Lowell
looks to the future by focusing on
emerging issues confronting the criminal
justice system, including violence and
victims, justice-involved mental health
populations, police innovations,
data-driven practice, and national
security. The school is a leader in the use
of innovative technologies, and offers
cutting edge graduate programs.
Peace and Conflict Studies
Through this inter-disciplinary program
at UMass Lowell, undergraduate and
graduate students explore the causes of
violence, methods to resolve violence,
and practices to build peace. They
combine theoretical and experiential
education to prepare students for
success in graduate school and their
careers. This is a critical global moment
for peace education as armed conflict
continues to be prevalent worldwide.
Peace and Conflict Studies is an
academic field that draws upon a
variety of disciplines such as cultural
studies, criminal justice, history,
philosophy, political science,
psychology, and sociology to address
the central questions of the field: What
are the causes and conditions which
generate and sustain violent conflict?
What are the principles and methods
for the resolution of violent conflict?
What are the norms, practices, and
institutions for building peace? Peace
and Conflict Studies students go into a
wide range of career fields such as:
§§ Restorative Justice
§§ Human Rights Advocacy
§§ Education
§§ Women’s Advancement
§§ Development
§§ Diplomacy
§§ Non-Profit Management
§§ Conflict Resolution

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
Cooperative Education
What is
Cooperative Education?
Better known as co-op, cooperative
education is an optional academic
program offer at UMass Lowell for
selected disciplines. It provides students
with professional experience related to
their fields of study.
It’s an ideal way to test out career
ideas and develop new skills, while
getting paid and adding value to
an organization.
Common questions
How do students get started
in co-op?
Typically, students meet with their
co-op coordinators in their second
semesters at UMass Lowell to learn
about how co-op works and how
to participate.
Are students still considered
full-time UMass students while
on co-op?
Co-op employment can be in the
next town or around the globe! Co-op
coordinators who are affiliated with
each college support and guide students
to prepare for and successfully
participate in the co-op experience.
Yes! Students who register for co-op
will retain their full-time student status
with no impact on financial aid, loan
repayment, or health insurance.
Students may also continue to live
in University housing.
Advantages of Co-op
Will it take a student longer
to graduate?
Co-op exposes students to the real
world of work and to career options.
It not only promotes a sense of
independence and professional
maturity, but also increases
opportunities for career positions
following graduation.
Here are just some of the advantages
of the co-op program at UMass Lowell:
§§ Students may choose one or more
3-month or 6-month co-ops,
depending on their academic
programs, and graduate with a
competitive edge in the job market.
§§ Students earn a salary while
on co-op, which can assist in
offsetting college expenses.
§§ Students participate in a
preparatory one-credit seminar
designed to help them succeed
in the co-op experience.
§§ Students are assigned a co-op
coordinator who serves as a
resource throughout the program,
acts as a liaison between the
student and employer, and
assists in identifying learning
objectives and accomplishments
from the experience.
Two 3-month summer co-ops will not
add length to a student’s academic
program; a 6-month co-op will most
likely add one additional semester.
Do students pay tuition while
on co-op?
§§ John Hancock
§§ Medtronic Vascular
§§ Mercury Computers
§§ MFS Investments
§§ Millennium Pharmaceuticals
§§ Moody, Famiglietti and Andronico
§§ National Grid
§§ Newell/Rubbermaid
§§ Nuance

§§ Putnam Investments
§§ Raytheon
§§ SABIC Innovative Plastics
§§ Sage Science
§§ Sullivan Bille PC
§§ Symnatec
