August 2012 MUG meeting At the August 28th, 2012 MUG meeting, Tim Matheny (Senior Systems Engineer) and Rusty Boozer (Senior Account Executive) from Apple hosted a session focusing on iPad use in teaching and learning. Tim Matheny can be contacted at: matheny@apple.com Rusty Boozer can be contacted at: rboozer@apple.com Presenting with the iPad • The iPad 2 has the ability to mirror (using an HDMI connector or VGA connector) to the audience what’s being shown on the iPad screen. • Tim demonstrated using the Apple TV as a “connector” to show what’s on the iPad screen without the need to be tethered to a podium. • iPhone 4S and iPad 2 – Support mirroring via Airplay • Kanex – a company that has a dongle/box that plugs into the Apple TV with a VGA out connection. • The Kanex ATV Pro sells online for $59.95 at http://www.kanexlive.com/atvpro iBooks Author • iBooks can be created on a Mac using the free iBooks authoring tool. You must be running Lion or Mountain Lion in order to use iBooks. • Can edit using the iPad or on the Mac while authoring an iBook • You can drag a Keynote or PowerPoint file into the iBook that becomes interactive and people can work with it. The text on the page automatically wraps around the newly added interactive item. • Any interactivity in your Keynote or PowerPoint file is respected including interactive hot spots, animations, and clicks. • Alternate image tags (alt tags) are automatically inserted. Alt tags have the ability to read information aloud and are very useful for visually impaired users. • Interactive versions of iBooks must be obtained through iTunes and can only be viewed on the iPad. • Books created within iBooks can be exported as a PDF file and viewed (without interactions) on any computer or device. • Know your PH – an iBook developed about pulmonary hypertension http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/know‐your‐ph/id505394389?mt=11 o Created by Harvard Medical School o Contains features such as an interactive glossary, ability to add notes within the book, and the ability to automatically create flash cards based on highlighting of text within the book. o If you would like to try out iBooks, the UTHSC Library has installed Lion on 6 Macs. August 2012 MUG meeting iTunes U app • Individual instructors can create their own class. • iTunes U course manager – web‐based tool that runs on any modern browser https://eduapp.apple.com • Courses can be public or private • Courses can be interactive and self‐paced • Example available in iTunes: Introductory Chemistry – Instructor uses some of his own materials as well as linking to others such as Khan Academy.
