Experience
Work Experience: Career started with teaching Economics (five years, 1967-72)
Research Fellow, ICSSR (1972-74)
Urban Economist, Ministry of Planning & Development, Govt. Of
West Bengal (1974-75)
Joined Tata Group as an Economist in the Group’s Economics
Think Tank in 1975, eventually heading the organisation as the
Chief Economic Advisor
Retired from Tata Group in mid 2004
Joined SPJIMR as Professor in mid 2004
Consulting Experience: Worked as Consultant to Tata Group for about a year (2003-04)
Research and Publications: Over 165 published papers, articles and pamphlets,
excluding the wide range of research studies/ papers prepared for the Tata Group over a
period of 30 years
After joining SPJIMR,
Coauthored a paper, ‘Business Effectiveness- the Next
Level: Being Served by the Poor’, published by Harvard
Business School in a book, Business Solutions for the
Global Poor, 2007.
Completed two empirical research studies on Corporate
Governance sponsored by NFCG,(i) Corporate
Governance Best Practices in Medium Sized Family
Managed Listed Companies (report submitted to NFCG in
2008, a comprehensive report of which incorporating the
proceedings of a round table of the same was submitted
to NFCG in March 2010)
(ii) A Study of Corporate Governance Practices and
Financial Performance of Family Managed Medium Sized
Listed Companies
Published an article in TMTC Journal, March 2010,
Beyond TBL- Tata Group as a Governance Model
Coauthored (with three PGDM students), A Case on
RLEK: Survival with the Bottomline, (won a Case-writing
contest organised by ISB-Ivey in 2011 and is in the
process of being published)
Additional Information
Memberships (of professional and academic bodies/forums): Presently : Member,
Expert Committee on Energy & Economics, Indian Merchants Chamber of Commerce
Member, Expert Committee on finalising the evaluation parameters for awarding the
best company in India in Corporate Governance practices, organised every year by the
Institute of Company Secretaries of India
