Note takers will not (continued):

 Tutor the student for payment by

SDS. (Students may hire and pay for tutors on their own.)

 Answer questions about the course content when these questions are better directed to the faculty member or teaching assistant.

The student with the disability will:

 Go to class – the note taker is not a substitute for class attendance.

 Contact the SDS Note Taker

Coordinator if there are problems or issues with the notes.

Photocopies

If photocopies of notes need to be made, check with the SDS office to determine how and where notes can be copied.

TakeNote ® is a note taking service that provides comprehensive notes for selected courses. SDS will pay for the TakeNote ® service in lieu of hiring a note taker. Check the TakeNote ® web site at www.tnote.com for a list of available courses as they vary from semester to semester.

Class Notes as an Accommodation

In some cases, Student Disability

Services (SDS) will determine that the provision of class notes is an appropriate and reasonable accommodation for students. Students who have been approved by SDS for class notes as an accommodation should first check to see if notes are being offered by TakeNote ®

(www.tnote.com). If they are, upon request, SDS will assist you in enrolling for the service. The request for TakeNote ® can be made at: www.sds.cornell.edu/NoteTakerRequest.php

If TakeNote ® is not offered, students should ask instructors if class notes are available when they deliver their accommodation letters. If notes are not readily available, students can request a note taker.

SDS will compensate a student who is currently enrolled in the same course as the student with a disability who requires note taking services. (Note:

SDS pays for one note taker per class.)

The identity of the student receiving notes can be withheld from the note taker, if desired.

Finding and Hiring a Note Taker

SDS will assist students in identifying note takers. Requests for a note taker are to be made online at: sds.cornell.edu/NoteTakerRequest.php.

The SDS Note Taker Coordinator will follow up with the student regarding the request. SDS will assist the note taker with the hiring process.

PLEASE NOTE: Note takers must be approved as an employee by the

Payroll Office BEFORE they can begin taking notes for pay.

Note Taker Guidelines

Once hired, the following guidelines for note takers and students receiving notes shall apply:

Note takers will :

 Write down all relevant information including lecture notes, test and quiz dates, assignments, and important vocabulary words and terms.

 There is an on-line, self-guided training program that note takers

Student Disability Services

may want to take to develop their own note taking skills, available at: pepnet.org/e-learning/notetaker.

While offered for students who are note taking for deaf peers, the program provides solid training appropriate for any student, with or without a disability.

 Attend all classes, be on time, and be prepared to take notes. A note taker who is unable to attend a class should contact the Note Taker

Coordinator (or the student, if known) so that other arrangements can be made.

 Submit a copy of notes to the SDS

Note Taker Coordinator via e-mail at sds_notes@cornell.edu or in person in the SDS office within 24 hours of the class.

 Be prepared to clarify notes, as needed.

Note takers will not:

 Be responsible for assisting the student with completing assignments properly or on time.
